Does this mark the end of the road for six-time All-Star reliever Joe Nathan?

According to a report by Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago on Friday, the Cubs have designated Nathan for assignment in order to make room for outfielder Jorge Soler to return from the disabled list.

The 41-year-old Nathan had only pitched in three games for Chicago this season, making his debut for the team in late July thanks to recovery from Tommy John surgery. But he became marginalized in the Cubs bullpen after they acquired both Aroldis Chapman and Joe Smith at the trade deadline.

Nathan has 377 career saves to his name, and that might be enough to pique the interest of a team looking for bullpen help on the cheap post-deadline. But it wouldn’t be a shocker either if it winds up that Nathan has thrown his last pitch in the MLB.
