Gary Sanchez is so hot right now that he can even drive in runs when teams are trying to walk him.
Sanchez continued his torrid ways with a solo home run in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. In light of Sanchez’s home run and .700-plus slugging percentage, the team decided to take advantage of an empty base and intentionally walk Sanchez in the 8th with the score 3-1.
Instead, Sanchez swung at the first pitch from Enny Romero and sent a deep fly ball to center, which was enough to score a run:
Credit to Sanchez for being alert despite knowing the Rays were trying to walk him. If they’re going to loft a 53-mph lollipop up there that’s too close to the strike zone, why not go after it?
