Don Mattingly refuses to look at ‘depressing’ standings

The Miami Marlins are free-falling out of playoff contention in the National League, and manager Don Mattingly doesn’t exactly want to know just how bad the damage is.

Before a 4-3 loss at home to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, Mattingly said that he doesn’t even look at the National League standings because the math for the Marlins to qualify for the postseason is so bleak.

“I never look at the standings as far as doing the math,” Mattingly said, per Tim Healey of the Sun Sentinel. “Because the math is depressing.”

The Marlins were 47-41 at the All-Star break, very much in the battle for a Wild Card spot in the NL. But since then, they have floundered to a 21-30 record and find themselves six games behind St. Louis Cardinals for the second Wild Card and quickly losing ground.

While the team will get a boost from the surprise return of their star slugger, they’re running out of time for Mattingly to be able to stomach the standings again this season.

Gary Kubiak refuses to rule out Paxton Lynch winning Broncos QB job

Rookie Paxton Lynch is still in the running for the Denver Broncos quarterback job.

Coach Gary Kubiak went to great lengths to assure reporters that Lynch was still very much in the conversation.

“He’s always been in the mix,” Kubiak said Saturday, via Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk. “I just told you guys that he’s behind the other two from a knowledge standpoint, but we’ve been out there competing every day. Everybody is in competition to play.”

Kubiak could just be handling things diplomatically to ensure that all three of his quarterbacks keep their heads up and fight for the role. That said, Elway has spoken highly of the youngster, and Mark Sanchez didn’t exactly impress in his audition Saturday night. It would still be a surprise, though, if Lynch won the role.
