Dak Prescott was easily the most impressive rookie of the NFL preseason, and now he will get an opportunity to start several games for the Dallas Cowboys. If the former Texas A&M star plays well, could he take Tony Romo’s job for good?
Trent Dilfer can see it happening.
In an appearance on ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on Friday, Dilfer expressed doubt over whether Romo will ever be the starting quarterback of the Cowboys again.
“I don’t know if he’ll ever see the field again for the Dallas Cowboys,” Dilfer said. “This kid (Prescott) has something special to him, and it’s not just the stats in the preseason. After I was in L.A. and watched the poise, watched the press, watched the calmness in his body and eyes, watched him on the sideline, watched him get deep into his progressions I said, ‘Wow, he really played well.’
“This is a kid that carried a program in the SEC on his shoulders. No moment was too big for him. He always played his best in the biggest situations.”
Of course, the first thing people think of with a backup quarterback stealing an injured veteran’s job is Tom Brady taking over for Drew Bledsoe. Dilfer had no problem perpetuating that talk.
“One person who has worked very closely with Tom Brady for a long time who also got to work with Dak Prescott says they have the exact same competitive temperament — Tom Brady and Dak Prescott are the same guys as competitors,” the NFL analyst added. “They’re relentless, fierce and their work ethic is second to none.”
To say this talk is premature would be an understatement. Jerry Jones loves Romo, and the Cowboys have always been extremely loyal to him. Prescott would really have to light it up to take Romo’s job. That said, we all remember what Dilfer said about the Patriots before they won the Super Bowl a couple of years back. Hot takes have kind of become his thing.
