Zach Ertz could reportedly miss extended time with rib injury

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz showed some nice chemistry with Carson Wentz, catching six passes for 58 yards in a Week 1 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately, the team might be without his services for the foreseeable future.

According to a report by Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday, Ertz could miss “an extended period” after suffering a displacement of the first rib on his left side in Sunday’s win.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is calling Ertz “week-to-week” and said that, while the 25-year-old did not suffer a fracture, his rib displaced itself under the collarbone.

Ertz got a five-year extension from the team just last January, which makes the timing of the injury even worse. Veteran Brent Celek and special teams cog Trey Burton are the next men up at the tight end position. Though both are stronger blockers, they’ll likely have a difficult time replicating Ertz’s production as a pass-catcher.

Torii Hunter Jr. will return to full practice, could be cleared soon

Torii Hunter Jr

Torii Hunter Jr. will return to a full practice for Notre Dame on Tuesday, which is the final step in being cleared from concussion protocol.

Hunter Jr. took a big shot to the head during Notre Dame’s game against Texas last week, though the play did not result in a targeting penalty.

Hunter suffered a concussion on that play and was ruled out for Notre Dame’s game against Nevada on Saturday.

The senior wideout had four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown in the team’s opener prior to exiting the game.

Notre Dame hosts Michigan State on Saturday.

Trent Dilfer thinks Dak Prescott could pull a Tom Brady on Tony Romo

Dak Prescott was easily the most impressive rookie of the NFL preseason, and now he will get an opportunity to start several games for the Dallas Cowboys. If the former Texas A&M star plays well, could he take Tony Romo’s job for good?

Trent Dilfer can see it happening.

In an appearance on ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on Friday, Dilfer expressed doubt over whether Romo will ever be the starting quarterback of the Cowboys again.

“I don’t know if he’ll ever see the field again for the Dallas Cowboys,” Dilfer said. “This kid (Prescott) has something special to him, and it’s not just the stats in the preseason. After I was in L.A. and watched the poise, watched the press, watched the calmness in his body and eyes, watched him on the sideline, watched him get deep into his progressions I said, ‘Wow, he really played well.’

“This is a kid that carried a program in the SEC on his shoulders. No moment was too big for him. He always played his best in the biggest situations.”

Of course, the first thing people think of with a backup quarterback stealing an injured veteran’s job is Tom Brady taking over for Drew Bledsoe. Dilfer had no problem perpetuating that talk.

“One person who has worked very closely with Tom Brady for a long time who also got to work with Dak Prescott says they have the exact same competitive temperament — Tom Brady and Dak Prescott are the same guys as competitors,” the NFL analyst added. “They’re relentless, fierce and their work ethic is second to none.”

To say this talk is premature would be an understatement. Jerry Jones loves Romo, and the Cowboys have always been extremely loyal to him. Prescott would really have to light it up to take Romo’s job. That said, we all remember what Dilfer said about the Patriots before they won the Super Bowl a couple of years back. Hot takes have kind of become his thing.

Cowboys could reportedly face wrath of NFL for signing Mark Sanchez too quickly

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mark-sanchez-broncos.jpg?fit=600%2C380

It was a matter of minutes between finding out Mark Sanchez had been released and learning that he was headed for the Dallas Cowboys. In fact, according to the NFL, it may have gone down entirely too quickly.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, the Cowboys could be in trouble if found to have signed Sanchez before the league issued an official daily transaction report.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reported that the Cowboys claim they have not yet finalized a deal and are merely discussing the terms of a one-year contract.

The team had reported on their official website that they “are expected to sign” Sanchez, though it shies away from making any pronouncement of a final, formal deal.

It’s all semantics, it appears. Sanchez will be a Cowboy in due time, and he will be Dak Prescott’s backup.

Five teams that could surprise the college football world in 2016

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/gus-malzahn-auburn-sweater-vest.jpg?fit=438%2C323

As the 2016 NCAA football season gets underway, debate generally focuses on national championship contenders and potential Heisman Trophy winners. But each year there are a number of surprise teams that make waves across the college football spectrum, and 2016 will be no different.

Here’s a quick look at five Power-5 teams that could alter the course of their conferences this season.

5. Nebraska Cornhuskers, Big Ten

Nebraska finished with a 6-7 record in head coach Mike Riley’s first season with the team, and much of that can be attributed to their minus-12 turnover margin. In six of those seven losses, the Cornhuskers were within eight points, but weren’t able to overcome the opposition’s points off of turnovers. They also suffered a 10-point loss to Purdue with quarterback Tommy Armstrong sidelined due to injury.

In 2016, Nebraska will look to shore up those turnover issues and benefit from relatively weak schedule, which features only three daunting games: Ohio State, Iowa and a non-conference matchup with Oregon.

With six starters returning on offense, Nebraska will once again aim to put up big numbers on the arm (and legs) of the aforementioned Tommy Armstrong. The key with his development will be to limit mistakes, feel comfortable with his check-downs and above all else, remain healthy. If Armstrong can do that, he has strong depth at both running back and wide receiver, which can only serve to benefit from the return of De’Mornay Pierson-El.

Defensively, Nebraska must do a better job limiting points per game (27.8 in 2015) and yards per play (5.9 in 2015). And while some of blame for points allowed can, again, be attributed to their minus-12 turnover margin, the same can not be said for allowing 5.9 yards per clip.

The back seven will likely handle their own for Nebraska, so it’s the improvement up front along their revamped defensive line that will need to come through. If they can do a better job rushing the passer and a better job setting the edge, Nebraska could very well surprise in the Big Ten.

4. Auburn Tigers, SEC

Heavily-hyped a year ago, the Tigers fell flat on their faces, finishing the 2015 season with a record of 7-6. As a result, expectations are not very high entering 2016.

Of course, we’ve seen this story before. Auburn finished 3-9 in 2012 and had been completely written off in 2013 before erupting on an unexpected journey all the way to the BSC National Championship Game.

For whatever reason, it seems like Auburn and head coach Gus Malzahn thrive on being the underdog. And needless to say, they’ll be exactly that in 2016.

The Tigers will enter the season unranked, facing uncertainty at the quarterback position and having dismissed running back Jovon Robinson as the result of disciplinary issues. But the one luxury they do have is a solid defense that will likely keep them competitive in every game — even against the other SEC West powerhouses.

Auburn will also benefit from opening the season with five straight home games, including the season kickoff on Sept. 3 against Clemson. And of the three top-10 teams they’ll face, only one of them will be an away game (at Alabama on November 16).

While the Tigers aren’t likely to reach the College Football Playoff in 2016, there’s enough reason to believe they’ll out-perform many of the last place predictions and create some waves in the SEC.

An eight-win season and a bowl game are not entirely out of the question.

3. Oklahoma State Cowboys, Big 12

After starting 10-0 last season, Oklahoma State suffered three consecutive embarrassing losses to Baylor, Oklahoma and Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl that have subsequently dropped their stock in 2016. But with 17 total starters returning and five of their first six games coming at home, things could be set up for the Cowboys to shake off the demons of 2015 and finally get over the hump.

Of course, getting over that hump has been and will be the biggest issue for Oklahoma State.

Can the Cowboys rise to the occasion down the stretch and become a top-15 team or will they once again be relegated a top-25 standing? Games against Texas Tech, who could also surprise in 2016, TCU (preseason No. 13) and Oklahoma (preseason No. 3) will ultimately be what determines that.

With such a successful franchise, a top-25 finish is expected, but that’s not the kind of “surprise” we’re looking for out of Oklahoma State this time around. Rather, the surprise will be resurrecting the sort of promise that surrounded the program from 2010-2013.

With the Cowboys’ passing attack likely to again be one of the best in the country, it will be up to Barry J. Sanders, a transfer from Stanford, to jump-start their struggling ground game. That added dimension will only make an already dangerous offense even more dangerous.

Defensively, Oklahoma State will want to reproduce what they did in 2015 in terms of turnovers, ultimately finishing the season with a plus-13 margin (+12 in victories). The more opportunities they can give their high-powered offense, the better their chances overall.

If the Cowboys can stay healthy, this might finally be the year they get over the hump and challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 title.

2. Washington Huskies, Pac-12

In a bit if irony, the Huskies are the obvious dark horse in the Pac-12 as the 2016 season gets underway.

Washington finished ahead of Oregon in the final preseason polls, receiving eight first-place votes to the Ducks’ one. Of course, they fell well behind the Stanford Cardinals, who led the way with 24 first-place votes.

The question is, can Chris Petersen, who has experienced tremendous success in his coaching career, return himself and the program to winning ways?

After a 7-6 finish last season, it would be easy to be skeptical. However, their record aside, Washington finished in the top 25 of most advanced analytics and they appear to be trending in the right direction with 17 starters returning in 2016.

With All-America candidates Sidney Jones (cornerback) and Budda Baker (safety) leading the way defensively, the Huskies could once again top the Pac-12 in points allowed per game (18.8 in 2015). Meanwhile, offensively, sophomores Jake Browning, who impressed in his true freshman campaign, and running back Myles Gaskin will benefit from the return of wide receiver John Ross (knee injury).

For the Huskies, it all boils down to their games against Stanford and Oregon, who have long been a thorn in Washington’s side. If they can win both, we’ll all look back on the soft preseason hype and consider it justified.

1. Louisville Cardinals, ACC

Bobby’s Petrino’s Cardinals are a fringe team after winning six out of their final seven games last season, and will have an early opportunity to prove whether they are contenders or pretenders in the ACC. They got off to a great start on Thursday night with a 70-14 thrashing of Charlotte.

Already with a convincing win in hand, Louisville will take on projected College Football Playoff favorites, Florida State and Clemson, over the first five weeks of the season, hosting the Seminoles on Sept. 17 and then traveling to take on the Tigers two weeks later on Oct. 1.

With eight starters returning defensively, including linebackers Devonte Fields and Keith Kelsey, the Cardinals should again be ranked among the ACC’s best. And with three starters returning along the offensive line, it will afford sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson, who just completed his first full offseason under Petrino, some continuity he didn’t benefit from a year ago.

If Jackson, a dual-threat who finished last season with 2,800 combined yards (1,840 passing, 960 rushing) and 33 combined touchdowns (12 passing, 11 rushing), can continue his progression, Louisville’s offense may begin to catch up to its defense. The eight touchdowns he put up against Charlotte indicate Jackson may be on his way to a huge season.

Ultimately, the Cardinals are trending in the right direction, but it’s their early games against NCAA powerhouses that stand in their way. They’ll need to play much better against Florida State than they did a season ago, where they fell 41-21, and capitalize on the missed opportunities that cost them an early victory against Clemson (20-17).

Confident Kyrie Irving says ‘nothing’ could hinder Team USA gold chase

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Kyrie-Irving.jpg?fit=519%2C433

Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving is feeling quite good about Team USA’s chances at the Rio Olympics.

Irving told reporters that he doesn’t really see any reason why the Americans should be tripped up in their chase for a gold medal.

“I don’t know…nothing,” Irving said Thursday when asked what could stop Team USA, via Michael Lee of the Vertical. “Honestly, that should be our attitude. If things get hard, we should be able to withstand it. And we’ll be ready for anything.”

Is Irving right? Well, yes. Rationally, nobody should really be able to challenge Team USA. That doesn’t mean, however, it’s a foregone conclusion. There are a few teams that could, conceivably, throw the Americans off on their quest. They’re right to be confident, but avoiding overconfidence and complacency will be vital.

Braves could reportedly pursue Yasiel Puig

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/yasiel-puig-2016-3.jpg?fit=560%2C369

Yasiel Puig

Yasiel Puig has likely played his last game for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and one team that might be able to afford taking on the restoration project is the Atlanta Braves.

According to a report by Jim Bowden of ESPN on Thursday, the Braves could explore a pursuit of the mercurial outfielder. Since they currently have the worst record in the league, Atlanta would have first priority in a potential waiver claim of Puig should the Dodgers place him there. Bowden also notes that if that effort fails, the Braves may consider trading a mid-level pitching prospect for the Cuban defector.

Puig, 25, was recently demoted to the minor leagues by the Dodgers after their acquisition of outfielder Josh Reddick at the trade deadline. They have long been open to dealing away Puig, and the Braves have a void at the right field position (aging veterans Nick Markakis and Jeff Francoeur notwithstanding) and not a lot to lose.

There is obviously significant risk that comes with adding Puig, especially considering how his performance on the field (he’s batting just .258 in his last two seasons combined) no longer allows for his foolhardy behavior off it to be tolerated. But Puig is the very definition of a buy-low guy right now, so the Braves might find a dice roll on him to be a decent enough investment.

Report: Cowboys could consider trading La’el Collins for defensive line help

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/lael-collins.jpg?fit=600%2C455

la

With both DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory suspended for the start of the 2016 season and Greg Hardy a persona non grata, the Dallas Cowboys badly need to upgrade their defensive line. The only question is what they’re willing to give up in order to get it.

According to a report by Ed Werder of ESPN on Thursday, NFL general managers have heard that the Cowboys may consider trading guard La’el Collins for a defensive end. However, Werder also notes that a Cowboys source was quick to refute the rumor.

The 23-year-old Collins went undrafted out of LSU but was signed by Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2015. He responded by busting out in his rookie season, winning the starting left guard job and bulldozing his way into Internet immortality with one-man flattening crew highlights such as this.

Though he is still a bit rough around the edges in pass protection, Collins is signed to an incredibly affordable deal (he will be making just $ 526,750 in 2016) and has the potential to become an elite offensive lineman as he develops further. The Cowboys would have to be desperate to even consider trading him. But unfortunately for them, the sorry state of their defensive line could ultimately force their hand in that direction.

Yankees could release Alex Rodriguez before end of season

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Alex-Rodriguez.jpg?fit=600%2C407

Alex Rodriguez

The New York Yankees were in an unfamiliar position at the trade deadline and decided to take advantage of market conditions by selling some of their pieces in exchange for great hauls of prospects. Since they decided to become deadline sellers, they may be convinced that a full-on rebuild is worthwhile. And such a rebuild could include releasing the likes of Alex Rodriguez, which the New York Daily News says is a possibility.

The Daily News says a source told them Monday that the Yankees could release A-Rod before the end of the season.

The Yankees have been riding out A-Rod’s awful contract for years and are almost finally done paying it. Rodriguez is owed the remainder of his $ 21 million salary for this season and $ 21 million next season. He’s hitting just .206 with nine home runs this season, which makes him a huge drag on the roster, unlike last season when he clubbed 33 home runs and was a valuable player for the Yanks.

Given the little money they still owe him, paying to get rid of A-Rod makes sense. But the one important factor to take into account is that Rodriguez has 696 career home runs and is four shy of 700. They may keep him around long enough to hit that milestone in pinstripes.
