(Don’t) Pull the (Panic) Lever Gronk! Sleeper TEs You Can Sub In For Week 1

Any chances of the Arizona Cardinals getting Gronked in the season premiere of NBC’s Sunday Night Football were well…Gronked…were dashed when the New England Patriots announced that the goofy but dominant tight end Rob Gronkowski would not travel with them to Glendale for what could be a prime time preview of Super Bowl LI.

Needless to say, this has fantasy football players who employ Gronkowski’s fantasy services, both in traditional and daily formats, exploded into sheer panic. Understandably, Gronkowski, agreed upon to be the NFL’s best tight end, is extremely coveted among the fantasy folk, evidenced by his massive value on FanDuel, currently standing at $ 8,700, highest among tight ends. In this case, you may feel your chances at victory this week without him are…Gronked (OK, last time I promise).

Not so fast, my friends. Taking a look at FanDuel’s tight end offerings, here are four guys, all valued at $ 5,500 or under,who can be the solution you need to survive your DFS week….

Jason Witten

The Dallas Cowboys have been a roller coaster of football over the past decade and a half. The lone consistent of positivity has been Witten, the veteran tight end, who will be missing his good friend Tony Romo this week as the Cowboys open up against their familiar foe, the New York Giants. The Cowboys will be starting Dak Prescott in his place against the Giants, and the rookie will be looking to veteran assistance in his first ever game, and he can look no further than Witten. There’s no telling how good the new look Giants defense will be, so you, like Prescott, can’t do much wrong adding him to your game plan.

Martellus Bennett

Who better to sub-in for Gronk than his backup? Entering his 9th season in the NFL, Bennett now comes to his 4th team. The Patriots obviously see potential in Bennett, considering they picked him up via trade with Chicago, sacrificing a 4th round pick. The Patriots, though mostly through the services of suspended quarterback Tom Brady, have made a living of unlocking massive potential inside journeymen receivers, and if we know anything about Bill Belichick’s offense, he can turn anyone into a star. Just don’t get into his doghouse, Martellus. You’ll never see the field again.

Tyler Kroft

Much like Bennett, Kroft will be filling in for a missing tight end star as well, as Tyler Eifert is expected to miss the Bengals’ Week 1 tilt with the Jets. New York’s very strong defense will be tough for Andy Dalton to beat, especially considering that Dalton will be playing his first downs of “real” football since last December. His normal targets, like AJ Green, could be heavily covered by the Jets’ smothering pass game, so Kroft could get a good opportunity to shine in the Notre Dame alum’s absence.

Richard Rodgers

Rodgers is much more than just a guy who happens to share a last name with his unrelated quarterback. He’s also much more than that guy who caught last year’s miracle at Detroit. Rather, since coming to the Packers via the 3rd round of the 2014 Draft, he has established himself as a consistent target in the Green Bay offense, enjoy a mini-breakthrough season with 510 yards and 8 touchdowns. His prescience in the Green Bay offense only increased as the year went on, as he started both Green Bay postseason games, nabbing 7 catches. Going up the Jaguars defense, a unit on the rise but still trying to find its identity, Rodgers can have himself a good day, especially with his somewhat more famous non-sibling throwing him the ball.

The Aguayos are the greatest kicking family of all time. MOVE OVER, GRAMATICAS.

For the past few years, Florida State’s kicker had been Roberto Aguayo, one of the best in college football history. He was so good, he declared for the draft as a junior — rare for a kicker — and the the Buccaneers used a second-round draft pick on him -- even rarer. Through preseason, that has looked like a bad idea, but whatever.

But now Aguayo is gone, and who steps in for the Noles? Ricky Aguayo, Roberto’s younger brother. The younger Aguayo was ranked in the top five of kicker recruiting rankings by Kohl’s (a service that ranks high school kickers) as well as ESPN and Scout. (ESPN had Roberto sixth.) and although he had offers from other schools like Alabama, he didn’t visit anywhere besides FSU. I mean, why would he?

So far in the Noles’ season opener against Ole Miss, Aguayo has looked just as good as his big bro. He’s 6 for 6 with three 40-plus yard field goals.

We presume Aguayo was trying to say he has ice water in his veins, a la D’Angelo Russell. But Russell’s celebration is just kinda pointing to his veins. Aguayo is pretending to be actually injecting ice water into his veins.

I gotta say injection is a legitimately poor way to consume water. It doesn’t even really get water to the parts of your body that require water. This looks a lot more like how you consume [ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE] or [SUBSTANCE ATHLETES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO CONSUME].

Celebrations aside, FSU should be in good shape with Baby Aguayo. Someone get Tampa Bay a first rounder in 2019 to lock this guy up.

San Francisco Giants inching closer to a record they really don’t want

Entering the All-Star break, the San Francisco Giants had the best record in baseball at 57-33. Since the All-Star break, they rest comfortably in the Major League Baseball cellar with a record of 12-25.

Despite Matt Moore’s near no-hitter in a 4-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night, the Giants’ current slump has them inching towards an all-time record. And not just any record, but an exclusive record that they want absolutely no part of.

If San Francisco can’t get things turned around over the next 35 games, they will have unfortunate honor of becoming the only team in baseball history to do a complete 180 after the All-Star break.

The team’s current slump defies explanation. There’s really no way around that, and no one on the team can make any sense of what’s happening.

“I really don’t feel this is going to be who we are. To me, I think we’re a much better team than this. We’re going to figure it out. We have to figure it out. It’s just going to happen,” first baseman Brandon Belt, who was batting .302 at the mid-way point but only .213 since, told the Los Angeles Times earlier this week. “It has to be one of those things where we put it all together. That’s what we did in the first half. I think it’s going to happen. We just have to get our butt in gear.”

For such a talented team, it’s remarkable to watch the Giants’ current slide. To go from perennial World Series favorite to staring an all-time record for futility in the face is, obviously, completely unheard of.
