4 awesome views of Tyrone Swoopes" Superman dive to finally put away Notre Dame

Tyrone Swoopes dove, and the cameras rolled.

Maligned Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoopes has made himself into a power-running force, and he scored the game-winning touchdown in the Longhorns’ thrilling double-overtime triumph against Notre Dame in Austin on Sunday.


This was cool from any angle. Here are four pretty awesome ones, including a few you didn’t see live on ABC, each doing a unique job of telling this story.



1. Here"s the TV broadcast.


As far as play analysis, this is the best. Swoopes takes a long, hard look at his offensive line, makes one oncoming tackler miss, then darts behind his left guard and (at various points) some other friends to find the end zone. He"s clearly got the instincts to be a good power runner.

2. Journalist David Ubben picked out one hell of a spot.





Ubben is a brave man for wandering into that chaos. Some men wouldn’t make it out of that fray with all their limbs still intact.



3. Austin American-Statesman beat reporter Brian Davis got a good look from the sideline.





Nice of the Longhorns to see the camera and gravitate toward it during their raucous celebration. Makes for a comprehensive mobile capturing and viewing experience.



4. An ESPN sideline employee had a great view.



This captures Swoopes’ hearty dive for the goal line, and the suspense of his charge toward the end zone really builds well with the audio levels. This was so tense, and it"s probably my personal favorite view.

Notre Dame-Texas Proved College Football Should Also Be On Sundays With The Game Of The Weekend

College football kicked off the season in earnest yesterday with a full day of games, and while there were several upsets, nothing came close to Notre Dame and Texas’ amazing game in prime time on Sunday night.



With a true freshman quarterback in Shane Buechele, the Longhorns weren’t expected to play quite this well against a No. 10-ranked Irish squad. But the kid can throw and Texas found itself opening up a lead!



Notre Dame didn’t panic though, and after switching between QB’s for most of the first half, coach Brian Kelly put his faith in DeShone Kizer and it paid off.



Along with some timely turnovers, Notre Dame climbed back and even took the lead 35-31, but another quick Texas touchdown put the Longhorns back ahead 37-35. Or so they thought, until the Irish tied it up BY BLOCKING AND RUNNING BACK THE EXTRA POINT!






The game ended up tied and of course, thanks to the NCAA, a ridiculous overtime process had to destroy what had been an amazing back and forth game so far. After trading touchdowns in the first OT session, Notre Dame could only muster a field goal for their second possession.

Notre Dame"s Equanimeous St. Brown just scored a really acrobatic TD

Most people are not this athletic.

Notre Dame and Texas are playing what"s quickly turning into a shootout. The Irish struck first, Texas answered with its freshman quarterback and then went ahead, and this thing"s still getting hotter.

Irish quarterback DeShone Kizer found receiver Equanimeous St. Brown for a 30-yard touchdown that tied the score in the second quarter. Check out the acrobatics on St. Brown"s part:

That"s a gorgeous throw from Kizer, but credit to St. Brown for getting wide-open and then making short work of Texas safety Dylan Haines, who tried (quite unsuccessfully) to stop him with a low tackle.

Notre Dame trolled by Whataburger after losing to Texas

After losing to Texas on Monday, Notre Dame was the subject of a joke by the social media department of a popular fast food chain.

Notre Dame came back from a 31-14 deficit in the third quarter to force overtime by blocking a point after touchdown attempt and returning it the other way for a score with less than four minutes to play in the fourth quarter. However, in the second overtime period, Notre Dame only managed a field goal on its possession. Texas responded with a rushing touchdown by Tyrone Swoopes for a 50-47 victory.

Despite leaving Austin with a loss, Whataburger suggested a way the Fighting Irish could still be winners.


Ouch. Gotta give them credit for capitalizing on the moment though. Well played, indeed.

ESPN confuses Devin Booker with arrested Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler

Devin Booker is the sharpshooting young 2-guard the Phoenix Suns drafted No. 13 overall last summer. Devin Butler is the Notre Dame cornerback who was arrested over the weekend on preliminary felony charges of battery to law enforcement and resisting arrest. ESPN ran into a bit of trouble making that distinction on Saturday.

The Worldwide Leader in Sports had a rather embarrassing gaffe on an episode of SportsCenter when they used an image of Booker to accompany a story about Butler’s arrest.

Of course living in the era of social media, the goof would not go unnoticed and wound up going viral, even coming to the attention of Booker himself.

The network quickly issued an apology within the hour, which was read on the air by anchor Zubin Mehenti.

Apparently, 13.8 points per game in your first NBA season, All-Rookie First Team honors, and a personalized gift from The Black Mamba isn’t enough to garner some respect around these parts. Keep grinding, Book.
