Wenger hails ‘world-class’ Ospina after PSG draw

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/de62e69a9da5aaf63d9cbf9ee4baaab3c54ad681.jpg?fit=640%2C427

Paris (AFP) – Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger described David Ospina as “world-class” after the Colombian goalkeeper justified his selection in Tuesday’s Champions League draw with Paris Saint-Germain with several decisive saves.

Ospina was beaten by Edinson Cavani’s header inside the opening minute at the Parc des Princes but foiled the French champions on several other occasions as Alexis Sanchez’s late leveller ensured a 1-1 draw in the Group A opener.

And Ospina’s performance silenced the doubters who questioned why Wenger had chosen to play him in Paris rather than regular number one Petr Cech, who was left on the bench.

“I have two world-class goalkeepers and I know we have enough matches to give both of them games. If you cannot play them you cannot keep world-class goalkeepers who don’t get games,” insisted Wenger.

Arsenal’s wobble in the Champions League at the start of last season, with surprise defeats to both Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos that almost condemned them to an early exit, was partly attributed to Wenger’s decision to play Ospina in goal.

The former Nice custodian made one calamitous error in particular that gifted a goal to the Greeks, but against PSG he rescued the London club with numerous interventions to deny Cavani and Angel Di Maria.

“Ospina was very good and he will have shown tonight for those who doubted him that he is a good goalkeeper,” added Wenger.

“When he played in the Champions League last season he made an error and everyone came down on him, but he has put things right.”

The question now is, will Ospina keep his place for Arsenal’s next Group A game at home to Swiss side Basel in two weeks, and Wenger hinted that he will.

“We have rules that the ‘keepers know. That’s why it is important to have clear rules from the start, and when that changes I inform them,” said the Frenchman.

“We can always change our minds. It’s down to performances and on what he has delivered tonight he has the right to claim to play in the next Champions League game.”

– Profligate Cavani –

It was far from a vintage Arsenal performance but the draw in what was on paper their trickiest fixture leaves them well placed to win their group, something they have not done in the Champions League in five years.

“PSG were good. They were determined, aggressive, quick on the break, and applied very strong physical pressure,” added Wenger.

“But even in the first half when we put together a few passes we felt we could be dangerous. We created chances in the second half and it is a good point for us.”

From a PSG perspective, their inability to see out the victory was less to do with Ospina than with Cavani’s inability to convert several chances to add to his opener.

The Uruguayan had two spectacular misses in the first half before being denied by the Arsenal ‘keeper in the second half, and Unai Emery’s side have now gone three games without a win.

“I am not happy with the result but I am happy with how we played. We need to play like this in future,” insisted the Spaniard Emery, who refused to be critical of Cavani.

“The most important thing is that he is creating chances for himself. That is positive for the future.”

Quarter-finalists in each of the last four seasons, PSG are next in Champions League action away to Ludogorets Razgrad in Bulgaria in a fortnight.

Mourinho demands Europa reaction after derby defeat

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/c5014bc0977620af68cd6e5015d82b2430719485.jpg?fit=640%2C427

Paris (AFP) – Fresh from giving his players a rollicking Jose Mourinho’s focus turns from Manchester United’s derby defeat to European action with a tricky Europa League opener at in-form Feyenoord on Thursday.

It will be the Portuguese manager’s first game in the second-tier European competition since winning its predecessor the UEFA Cup with Porto in 2003 and he says he is taking it seriously.

Mourinho’s unbeaten start as United manager came to a stuttering stop Saturday as long-time nemesis Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City left Old Trafford with a 2-1 victory.

United can expect a tough Group A opener at Feyenoord, who are top of the Dutch league having won all five of their matches this season and have pedigree in the competition.

United’s Spanish attacking midfielder Juan Mata warned that after the disappointment of derby day there was “no time for mourning”.

“On Thursday we’re going to play the first game in the Europa League, away against Feyenoord, a classic in European football,” Mata said on his weekly blog.

“It’s going to be a very demanding debut in this competition,” he added of the road to the final in Stockholm next May.

Mourinho says that young attacking sensation Marcus Rashford will play after his impressive second-half cameo along with midfielder Ander Herrera on Saturday.

“He (Rashford) is going to play is the only thing I can say. I trust him completely and I know his future will be absolutely brilliant,” said the Portuguese, who was scathing of some of his players after the City defeat, particularly defender Eric Bailly.

English-Dutch clashes are always feisty affairs but United have beaten Feyenoord in both their previous meetings.

This time it will be more subdued — at least in the stands — with the capacity of the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam halved to 26,000 following UEFA sanctions for crowd trouble against Roma earlier this year.

United fans, whose ticket allocation has been slashed to 1,400, have been advised by the club not to wear United colours and avoid areas of potential conflict.

Feyenoord manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst said: “I’m confident that -– in spite of the measures the club has to take –- an atmosphere will be created again at De Kuip to ensure we, as a team, are able to perform at our very best in our home matches.”

Former United and Feyenoord striker Robin van Persie is set to play both clubs as his Fenerbahce side are also in Group A with the Turkish side taking on Zorya Luhansk of Ukraine in their opener.

Van Persie won the competition with boyhood club Feyenoord in 2002.

– Spanish domination –

Spanish clubs have won six of the last 10 Europa League titles with Sevilla, the reigning three-time champions, now playing in the elite Champions League.

Of the finalists in the Europa League over the last decade eight are from Spain, who this season will be represented by Athletic Bilbao, Celta Vigo and Villarreal.

Celta, struggling from five successive La Liga losses, travel to Standard Liege in Group G, which also includes Dutch giants Ajax and Greek club Panathinaikos.

Athletic Bilbao travel to Italian side Sassuolo in Group F, which includes Rapid Vienna of Austria and Belgium side KRC Genk. Villarreal host FC Zurich in Group L.

England’s second representative, Southampton, host Czech club Sparta Prague in Group K looking for their first win under new boss Claude Puel, with Inter Milan, three times winners, hosting Israeli club Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

NFL Week 2 Power Rankings: Steelers Climb After Opener; Colts, Rams Slide

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/capture.jpg?fit=301%2C284
Opening weekend of the 2016 NFL season was rich with drama, as 11 of the 16 games were decided by seven points or fewer and four were decided by a single point.

Here’s a look at where each team stands in NESN.com’s NFL power rankings as we head into Week 2. (To see our Week 1 rankings, click here.)

1. New England Patriots (Week 1: 1): The kings stay the kings in these rankings after upsetting the Cardinals on the road in Jimmy Garoppolo’s first NFL start.

2. Arizona Cardinals (2): Despite what general manager Steve Keim might believe, Arizona’s loss to Garoppolo & Co., while surely disappointing, was not the end of the world. The Cards will be a tough out all season.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers (6): Playing without the suspended Le’Veon Bell, the Steelers shook off a slow start Monday night to trample the Redskins 38-16 behind 143 rushing yards by DeAngelo Williams. It was the second-largest margin of victory of any game on opening weekend.

4. Green Bay Packers (5): A touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Davante Adams in the final moments of the first half put the Packers ahead for good as they held off a pesky Jaguars squad in Week 1. Rodgers accounted for all three Green Bay touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in a 27-23 win.

5. Seattle Seahawks (3): We won’t overreact to one game, but needing a last-minute touchdown to beat the Dolphins as 10 1/2-point favorites wasn’t how the Seahawks wanted to begin their season.

6. Carolina Panthers (4): The beatdown the Broncos put on Cam Newton bordered on unsettling. The Panthers’ franchise quarterback is a physical freak, but Carolina can’t have him taking those type of hits week in and week out.

7. Denver Broncos (9): Trevor Siemian looked … actually pretty good in his real taste of NFL action. If he can maintain that, the Broncos will climb this list in a hurry.

8. Cincinnati Bengals (7): Andy Dalton was sacked seven times but still managed to carve up the Jets’ defense to the tune of 366 passing yards, his highest total since Week 3 of last season.

9. Oakland Raiders (10): Twenty-two points in the fourth quarter, a gutsy two-point conversion and the tweet of the weekend? That’s enough to earn Oakland a one-spot bump.

10. Kansas City Chiefs (9): Like the Raiders did, the Chiefs fell into a massive hole early before staging a wild comeback. The AFC West rivals combined to score 45 points in the fourth quarter and overtime of their respective season openers.

11. Houston Texans (13): Quarterback Brock Osweiler, running back Lamar Miller and rookie receiver Will Fuller all looked solid against the woeful Bears.

12. New York Jets (11): The Jets only lost to the Bengals by one point, but A.J. Green’s demolition of Darrelle Revis has to concern Gang Green supporters.

13. Baltimore Ravens (15): Baltimore held old friend Rex Ryan and the Bills to a single score in a 13-7 win.

14. New York Giants (16): Eli Manning’s troops did just enough to beat the Tony Romo-less Cowboys.

15. Minnesota Vikings (14): Minnesota’s defense was ferocious in a win over Tennessee, but failing to score a single offensive touchdown would result in a loss against most NFL opponents.

16. Washington Redskins (12): The Redskins led the Steelers 6-0 20 minutes into their Monday night matchup. They were outscored 38-10 the rest of the way.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars (18): The Jags hung right with the Packers all game. They could surprise some people this season.

18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (22): The Bucs’ climb up the rankings has begun after Jameis Winston’s four-touchdown performance against the Falcons.

19. Detroit Lions (21): Neither the Lions nor the Colts deserved to win their Week 1 matchup…

20. Indianapolis Colts (17): But Indy definitely deserved to lose after falling behind 21-3, rallying all the way back to take a 38-35 lead with less than a minute remaining and then immediately squandering it by allowing a game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

21. Buffalo Bills (19): Through one week, the Bills rank last in the NFL in yards and passing yards and second-to-last in points.

22. Atlanta Falcons (20): The Falcons just look destined for mediocrity this season.

23. Miami Dolphins (26): Kudos to Miami for hanging tough with Seattle. That front seven has the potential to be seriously disruptive this season.

24. Dallas Cowboys (23): C’mon, Terrance Williams. Just run out of bounds, man.

25. Chicago Bears (24): See: Falcons.

26. San Diego Chargers (27): We’re just going to leave this here:

Chargers27. San Francisco 49ers (30): The Chip Kelly era got off to a rollicking start Monday night, hence the slight rankings bump.

28. New Orleans Saints (28): Saints defense: Still bad.

29. Los Angeles Rams (24): Rams offense: Possibly even worse.

30. Philadelphia Eagles (31): Is Carson Wentz the real deal? He certainly looked like it in Week 1, albeit against the miserable Browns.

31. Tennessee Titans (29): Three turnovers and dearth of offense in the second half doomed the Titans against the Vikings.

32. Cleveland Browns (32): The Browns lost to the Eagles in an early-season Toilet Bowl, and their quarterback already is on injured reserve. So, business as usual in Cleveland.

Rams’ Aaron Donald ejected after scuffling with a 49er and making contact with a ref

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/donald_720.0.jpg?fit=640%2C426

Welcome football back to LA!

The Los Angeles Rams played their first game in over 20 years with a Monday Night Football matchup against the 49ers, and, while not existing was bad, their first game may have been worse. They lost 28-0, meaning the Los Angeles Rams still haven’t scored since 1994.

The Rams’ evening could easily be summed up in an outburst by star defensive lineman Aaron Donald with about five minutes to go. It started as officials gathered at the middle of the field to discuss a potential late hit penalty on Rams LB Alec Ogletree. Players gathered around to hear the discussion, and as they did, Donald grabbed 49ers WR Quinton Patton by the neck before shoving his helmet off.

Somewhere in the scuffle, Donald apparently made contact with an official. Cameras didn’t capture it, but the referees say it happened. Maybe he brushed somebody in that scuffle? Maybe a ref got hit, didn’t see who did it, and blamed it on Donald? Maybe the cameras just missed it? Whatever happened, the refs believed he made contact with an official, and that’s a foul that comes with an automatic ejection.

When he heard news of his ejection, Donald violently spiked his helmet at the field and screamed THAT’S BULLSHIT MAN. (Perhaps he didn’t believe he actually did hit a ref.)

The previous play had ended at the 38-yard line. Donald’s unnecessary roughness penalty cost LA 15 yards, putting the ball at the 23, and Donald’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed the ball half the distance to the goal, an additional 12 yards. All in all, Donald’s outburst cost LA 27 yards, and the 49ers scored another touchdown to make it 28-0 four plays later.

Donald will almost certainly be fined by the league office. He was violent toward another player, violent toward a ref, and over-the-top in the way he expressed his displeasure afterward. But on the plus side, he got to leave the game early.

Los Angeles Rams heavily mocked after horrendous debut

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/jeff-fisher-rams.jpg?fit=600%2C361

Jeff Fisher Rams

The Los Angeles Rams looked absolutely terrible in their first game since moving back to LA. The team got shutout 28-0 by another team that was expected to be crappy this year. That’s how bad the Rams are; they got embarrassed by a team most expected to be a 5-win franchise this season.

Here’s the thing: Not only was the Rams’ offense laughably bad, but what does it say about the team’s quarterback situation if No. 1 pick Jared Goff is third on the depth chart? He’s so bad that not one, but TWO guys were ahead of him on a team that could only pass for 120 yards against the 49ers? Just how bad is Goff?

I said all along during the draft process that Carson Wentz was the guy and that Goff wouldn’t be good. I also said the Rams screwed themselves by trading two seconds and a third in the last draft and a first and third in next year’s draft for him.

Get ready for a crappy five seasons to start the Rams’ return to LA, fans. They’re off to a great start in maintaining fan interest in a city whose attention span lasts about as long as it takes to drink one of their pressed carrots and ginger organic juice shot.

Anyway, let’s take a look at the best tweets from fans mocking the Rams:

Congrats to Eli Rogers on his first career NFL touchdown! It doesn"t matter if it bounced off your teammate and also your face and right into your hands. It just matters that you caught it.

Again: It. bounced. off. his. face.

In all seriousness, congrats to Eli, who was an undrafted free agent in 2015. He"s currently leading the Steelers in receiving yards.

Jaguars" Allen Robinson Catches His Own Fumble After Giving It The Old Loop-Dee-Doo

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/JnIBF8m.gif?fit=640%2C324

Things looked grim for Jaguars wide receiverAllen Robinson, as he found himselfand his fumblesurrounded by a sea of Packers. On second and four in the late 4th quarter, Robinson caught a 20-yardpass from Blake Bortles, saw the impending crush, and dropped down his shoulder, causing the ball to bang off of a yellow helmet. The thing took a kind of funny pop in the air, rolled around behind him, and a flurry of Packers" arms reached in to capitalize on the situation. But Robinson knew better than that. He watched the thing float above him, rolled on his man"s back, and snagged it out of the naked air. Good thing he had that old loop-dee-doo up his sleeves. Whew.

Jack Del Rio Burned ESPN After It Questioned His Game-Winning Decision To Go For Two

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/raiders-jack-del-rio.jpg?fit=640%2C355

Oakland was in a shootout with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon. The Raiders scored a touchdown with just over 40 seconds left to get within one point of a tie game. Kick the extra point, get the tie and head to overtime, right?

Not if you’re Jack Del Rio. The Raiders’ coach elected to go for two and the win, and Del Rio’s gambit paid off. Oakland converted after Derek Carr connected with Michael Crabtree, and New Orleans couldn’t make a game-winning 61-yard field goal on its drive to give the Raiders the win.

According to ESPN’s win probability metrics, Del Rio made the wrong call, but he obviously didn’t see it that way. In fact, Del Rio made it known on Twitter that he doesn’t see eye-to-eye with the worldwide leader’s calculations.

The best part was that a quick reading of ESPN’s article explaining why he made the wrong call makes it pretty clear that in this situation, he actually probably made a very sound decision based on a few factors, including the fact that the Raiders had already gone for two earlier and converted. And Del Rio agrees!

Regardless, the best part of all of this is that in today’s NFL, coaches largely never express any personality or say anything besides boilerplate PR quotes. To see Del Rio burn ESPN with the quick retort is like a refreshing gulp of haterade.

Keep gambling, Del Rio. Carolina head coach Ron Rivera is often called Riverboat Ron for his propensity to go for fourth down conversions, but maybe it’s about time we actually gave that nickname to a coach whose name literally means “from the river.”

Nick Saban furious with Lane Kiffin after late touchdown

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/nick-saban.jpg?fit=600%2C324

Nick Saban

Nick Saban went crazy on the sidelines and chewed out Lane Kiffin at the end of Saturday’s win over Western Kentucky.

Alabama was up 38-3 with 2:10 left and the game was essentially over, but Bama’s Kiffin called for a non-traditional running play. The Tide lost the ball on a fumble, and Western Kentucky turned it into a touchdown to make the score 38-10.

That led Saban to ream Kiffin on the sidelines:

Asked about the exchange after the game, Saban dismissed the notion that the two had an argument and called it an a– chewing.

Saban was extremely frustrated after the victory.

The comments come as no surprise considering he’s a perfectionist who does not want to see his team make any mistakes. It’s also interesting to note that Western Kentucky’s late touchdown could have affected the betting spread, which was around 27 points.

Rich Hill pulled from perfect game after seven innings

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/rich-hill.jpg?fit=600%2C362

Rich Hill

Rich Hill was pulled during the middle of a perfect game bid for the Dodgers on Saturday as the team opted to preserve his health.

The 36-year-old southpaw had thrown 89 pitches when the Dodgers decided to lift him for reliever Joe Blanton. The decision was difficult, but it was founded given the situation.

Hill recently returned from a blister injury that landed him on the disabled list. He pitched on Aug. 24 after being acquired by the Dodgers, but then was scratched from his next start. Then he pitched six innings in his second start with the Dodgers, also getting the win. This was just his third start for the Dodgers.

Hill has been spectacular for the Dodgers when able to pitch. He’s thrown 19 scoreless innings over three starts for the team, allowing just six hits and two walks. The team has much bigger things in mind than a perfect game; they’re going after a World Series and will need Hill for the playoffs.

This is the second time this season that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has made a similar tough call. He also pulled Ross Stripling during a no-hitter in April.

Two Buffalo Bills players had to find their own way to the stadium on Sunday after the team bus left them behind.

Report: Larry Fitzgerald to retire after season

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Larry-Fitzgerald.jpg?fit=573%2C339

Larry-Fitzgerald

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is planning to make the 2016 season his last in the NFL.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Fitzgerald has decided he will retire at the end of the year.

Fitzgerald, a nine-time Pro Bowler, turned 33 a little over a week ago. He enjoyed one of his best seasons as a pro last year, hauling in a career-high 109 receptions for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns.

The Cardinals are a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season, and Fitzgerald would obviously like to go out with a ring. The veteran had an injury scare during training camp last month, but he appears to be healthy heading into Week 1. He’ll likely be a lock for the Hall of Fame.

Fabricio Werdum defeated Travis Browne at UFC 203 on Saturday night, but perhaps the bigger story was what went down in the Octagon after the fight.

Shortly after Werdum was announced as the winner by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 30-27), he appeared to taunt Browne’s corner with a crybaby gesture. That prompted Edmond Tarverdyan, Browne’s trainer, to start yelling at him before a brief altercation ensued, culminating with Werdum kicking Tarverdyan in the chest.

Werdum isn’t exactly known for his graciousness in victory, but this was still a strange incident all around. Credit though to Tarverdyan, who is also known for training Browne’s more famous girlfriend, Ronda Rousey, for brushing off Werdum’s kick like it was a mere insect bite.

Mourinho points finger after Man Utd derby loss

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/5bdbe1dbdabbcbd659f95e5a8634531e5f13d015-768x558.jpg?fit=640%2C465

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho singled out some of his players for stinging criticism following their 2-1 loss to derby rivals Manchester City.

The United manager hauled off Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard at half-time and said it was only because he did not want to “destroy them” that he did not substitute them earlier.

But he saved his most trenchant remarks for centre-backs Daley Blind and, in particular, Eric Bailly, saying some players had shown signs they did not possess the requisite big-game temperament.

“We had problems with poor performances,” Mourinho told reporters at Old Trafford on Saturday.

“We lost the ball very, very easy. Even our central defenders, that were really top class until today, they lost easy balls.

“Back-passes, first-station passes, from Bailly to (Marouane) Fellaini, from Blind to (Paul) Pogba.

“We lost the ball in these kinds of positions. So it was not (just) Mickey (Mkhitaryan) and Jesse, it was much more than Mickey and Jesse.”

Pep Guardiola’s City took a deserved 15th-minute lead when Kevin De Bruyne beat Blind to Kelechi Iheanacho’s flick-on before steering a shot past David de Gea.

The same pair combined to double City’s lead, Iheanacho tapping in after De Bruyne’s low shot came back off the post.

An error from City’s debutant goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who flapped at a deep free-kick from Wayne Rooney, allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to pull a goal back.

But although United improved following the half-time introductions of 18-year-old Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera, they could not find an equaliser.

– ‘I respect him’ –

“What I told them at half-time was that for some of you, it looks like you are trying to do what I told you not to do,” said Mourinho.

“I told Bailly 20 times, never play a first-station ball. Never. Because this is where they want to press. Never do that. He did it 20 times during the game.

“I think really some of the boys, they felt the dimension of the game. Everything around the game — the derby, the big game, Man United-Man City, the focus, the attention — some of the guys felt it.

“It has nothing to do with inexperience or age because you have the kid (Rashford) then in the second half and the kid looks like he was playing in the Under-18s against Salford City.

“So it’s about the individual and every individual reacts to the dimension of the occasion in different ways. It’s difficult to predict.

“It only gets easier when you know the players very, very well. So probably in the next big game in the Premier League, I know who can accept the dimension of the game, which is very important.”

Mourinho blamed referee Mark Clattenburg for not awarding a penalty after a rash challenge on Rooney by Bravo.

Guardiola said he had not seen the incident, but revealed that Aleksandar Kolarov had lost a tooth during the game.

The left-back appeared to be struck in the face by Fellaini at one point, but Guardiola said he did not know what had happened.

The match had been billed as a showdown between Mourinho and Guardiola, who fought a ferocious running battle during their time as coaches of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

The pair embraced before the match and Guardiola said he hoped future contests between the teams would not be discussed in terms of their personal relationship.

“I don’t know if he respects me, but I respect him a lot,” said the former Bayern Munich coach.

“We are fathers. I am a father, he’s a father, so I didn’t come here to see about the rivalry. He wants to win, I want to win.

“I beat him, he beats me. In the future I beat him, he beats me. It’s simple like that. We are adult people. When we see each other, sometimes we don’t agree about our opinions.

“Hopefully next time we play against United, people start to forget.”

Dad Reduced To Blubbering Mess After Son Makes MLB Debut For Pirates

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/KYkE59T.gif?fit=640%2C360

Trevor Williams"s dad is a good dad.

Athletes are not robots. They are not machines. They have emotions and they have families and loved ones who have seen and known their sweat and labor. And sometimes when it all comes together, and they reach a pinnacle to their careers, we see this. We see the walls come down and the humanity show.

We see Trevor Williams make his major league debut for the Pirates and earn his first win. We see him hug his wife and his young child. And we see his father watching it all and damn near breaking down in the stands at PNC Park.

We see videos and moments of this, and when they"re captured and played for us, no one needs any extra schmaltz or sappy editing. Just watch the raw feed and feel the emotion of it.

Daaaaawww.

"It was an incredible moment for me and my family," Williams said. "He"s an emotional guy. He wears his heart on his sleeve. As soon as we embraced all the emotions came out.

"He"s been battling lymphoma all year. He had rigorous chemo and radiation. Right now we"re awaiting results to see if he"s in remission or not."

He adds: "There"s no one else I would rather share that moment with than my dad. He"s been with me since the very beginning, he"s taken me to Padres games when we were very young."

Astros Manager A.J. Hinch Ejected After Awful Missed Call Leads To Two Runs

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/foul-ball.jpg?fit=615%2C398
People in baseball widely consider Jim Joyce one of Major League Baseball’s best umpires, but when he gets one wrong, he really gets it wrong.

Joyce had no choice but to eject A.J. Hinch on Wednesday afternoon in Cleveland after the Houston Astros manager argued a blatant missed call on the ump’s part.

Indians infielder Lonnie Chisenhall tried to check his swing on a ball that hit the dirt, took a funny bounce and went shooting away from home plate. Cleveland had the bases loaded, and two Indians runners scampered home, as the Astros just stood there expecting Joyce to rule a dead ball.

That’s because the Astros knew what actually happened. Chisenhall might have checked his swing, but the ball then bounced off the dirt in front of home plate and hit Chisenhall’s bat. A foul ball should have been called, but Joyce (or apparently any of the other umpires) didn’t see it, allowing the runs to come home.

Ultimately, it also led to Hinch’s ejection.

Your browser does not support iframes.

As you can see, the bat clearly hit the ball.

For as good as Joyce’s reputation is within baseball, he’ll likely always be remembered for costing then-Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game in 2010. Joyce blew a call at first base with two outs in the ninth inning.

Olympiakos say ‘no wrongdoing’ after UEFA investigation

http://www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/cd2d06f8f2ccf23c54b376db4e68ea1c454ad01e.jpg

Piraeus (Greece) (AFP) – Greek champions Olympiakos on Thursday said that an investigation into the club by European football’s governing body UEFA has found no wrongdoing.

Olympiakos responded with a statement after a report by Britain’s Press Association revealed that the club’s owner, shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis, was being investigated in relation to match-fixing allegations.

“Olympiakos has informed UEFA about the case and is continuing informing them step by step. It is known to everyone that UEFA has examined the information received and concluded that there is no evidence that implicates Olympiakos,” the statement by the club said.

An Athens prosecutor suggested Tuesday that Marinakis be held in custody before he stands trial for his alleged involvement in the establishment of a criminal gang which fixed football matches.

Prosecutor Stamatis Daskalopoulos said that Marinakis, 49, violated an existing order that banned him from getting involved in football activities until his trial and thus should be taken into custody.

The Press Association quoted a UEFA spokesman as saying that an official request has been sent in order to get a copy of the report issued by Daskalopoulos.

A court decision on Daskalopoulos’ proposals is expected within a few days.

Marinakis lashed out at Daskalopoulos saying that his action “is directed against Olympiakos and my activity in the team’s progress.”

“The prosecutor’s proposal will be judged by the Athens Appeals Court in the coming months. I expect a fair judgement by an impartial, independent and free judiciary,” Marinakis said in a statement on the Olympiakos website.

Marinakis said that he would take legal action against Daskalopoulos as well as make a disciplinary report to the proper authorities.

The Olympiakos owner has recently tried to gain a majority share in English club Notthingham Forest and over the weekend secured one of four national television licenses with a bid of 73 million euros ($ 82.1 million, £61.2 million).

Last year, Marinakis was ordered to post 200,000 euros bail and banned from participating in football related activities until a trial is held.

He faces charges for his alleged involvement in the establishment of a criminal gang which fixed matches between 2011 and 2013.

Marinakis has spent six years at the helm of Olympiakos. The Piraeus club have won the league title six seasons in a row.

Besides Marinakis, 27 other people have been recommended by Daskalopoulos to face trial, including former Hellenic Football Federation president Giorgos Sarris, former owners of clubs, referees and players.

Future Hindsight: 5 Fantasy Players We’ll Want Off Waivers After Week 1

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Rudolph-Tom-Dahlin-cover.jpg?fit=640%2C369

Rudolph-Tom-Dahlin-cover

In just a few days, we’ll be watching all the NFL action we can handle, which means we’re also going to be kicking ourselves in the butt after we see some of the players produce big numbers in Week 1 Fantasy Football leagues. So do we have the ability to look ahead to see which players we should’ve picked up off waivers after Week 1 – even before it happens?

Of course we do! Who’s to say we can’t!?! I mean, outside of the laws of time travel.

So we looked at the Fantasy Football ownership percentages at every position on CBSSports.com and found you a handful of players to take a chance on now, before it’s too late.

5 Fantasy Football Players We Wished We Already Owned

We’re only going to list the players that are still available, before Week 1’s games, in 70 percent or more Fantasy Football leagues.

Jay Cutler, QB, Chicago Bears (Owned in 30% of Leagues)

I’d love to tell you Joe Flacco and Dak Prescott would be great pickups, but they’re already gone in most leagues (more than 50-percent ownership), so we’re digging deeper.

While it’s true, Cutler isn’t what he used to be, nor is the Bears offense with Martellus Bennett, Matt Forte and Adam Gase all working elsewhere in 2016. But Dowell Loggains takes over as the Bears’ offensive coordinator, after serving alongside Gase as the Bears’ quarterbacks coach.

Cutler will still have superstar WR Alshon Jeffery to throw to, solid pass-catching running backs, and second-year rookie Kevin White is finally ready to make an impact. Considering White was a top-10 NFL Draft pick last season, he steps in like Amari Cooper did last year, but with a full season’s worth of on-site education.

While Cutler might have a tough time with Houston’s pass rush this weekend, he’ll be facing the Eagles in Week 2, which should be one of the most favorable matchups of the week.

C.J. Prosise, RB, Seattle Seahawks (Owned in 26% of Leagues)

Thomas Rawls is working his way back from a bad ankle injury, and Christine Michael has proven to be a solid failure in the past. The Seahawks love to run the ball, and Prosise has put his own injury woes behind him.

Rawls is on a snap-count, which means Michael will have plenty of chances to show he’s not much more than what we all thought he was to begin with. The former Golden Domer has great hands, something his counterparts don’t have, and that could be his key to Fantasy success against the Dolphins.

Did we mention Miami ranked last against running backs in Fantasy Football points scoring last season, allowing nearly 28 Fantasy points per game to the position in 2015?

Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Philadelphia Eagles (Owned in 30% of Leagues)

It’s funny how we all forget just what a beast DGB was in college, when he was with Oklahoma. Even last season, in his rookie year, with a rookie quarterback, he led the Titans in receiving! Well, he might have another rookie quarterback throwing to him in Philadelphia, where Tennessee traded him, but Carson Wentz and head coach Doug Pederson should use DGB’s size much better. At 6-foot-5, there aren’t many WRs like him, and he could become an outstanding red-zone threat for Philly – including in Week 1 against Cleveland, which ranked 31st against Fantasy WRs last year.

  • 4/5

Breshad Perriman, WR, Baltimore Ravens (Owned in 9% of Leagues)

The second-year receiver partially tore his PCL last season and he reinjured his knee again this summer, but was able to make it back for the final preseason game for the Ravens. He’s a good sized wide receiver with elite speed when he’s healthy. The Ravens lack star power, but Perriman can be that guy for Joe Flacco – once he’s healthy. He’ll likely play this weekend against the Bills (ranked 27th against WRs), and then he plays against the Browns (31st vs. WR) in Week 2.

If Perriman can play – even at 80 percent – he should be able to take advantage of two lackluster defenses to start the season. Overall, the Ravens have the 28th-toughest schedule for WRs, so that’s another great reason to pick him up sooner than later.

Kyle Rudolph, TE, Minnesota Vikings (Owned in 30% of Leagues)

Rudolph made some Fantasy noise earlier in his career but has quieted after some injuries. That’s pretty much the problem with owning him, as he gets dinged up often. He has just one 16-game season in the past three years – but that was last year! Sam Bradford comes over from Philadelphia now, and the Oklahoma product throws to his tight ends often, which is a harbinger of good things to come for Rudolph, who should be one of the Vikings’ most reliable pass-catchers once again.

Referee Hospitalised After Shocking Act Of Violence During Match

Referee Hospitalised After Shocking Act Of Violence During Match

Punch GIF

A referee in Argentina has ended up in hospital after being punched in the face by a player during a league game.

The disgraceful incident occurred during Atletico Quilmes’ clash with Sportivo Norte, which was understandably abandoned following the assault.

The game ended 0-0 after referee Silvio Ruiz was taken to hospital.

Check it out:

During the clip, you can see the perpetrator, Quilmes defender Leonardo Vera, berating the referee, before the official turns round to caution him.

Vera then completely loses his head and strikes out at Ruiz three times, connecting clean in the face once, before being dragged away by three team mates.

Sportivo’s coach, Juan Orellana said:

It is worrying that these things happen in a match.

When you are playing football, you have to calm down, there was no reason to end it like this.

We all know that football can be an emotional game at times, but there’s no excuse for something as horrendous as this.

The incident was obviously shocking, and something that isn’t acceptable on a football field, or in any walk of life.

Notre Dame trolled by Whataburger after losing to Texas

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Notre-Dame-Shamrock-Helmet.jpg?fit=500%2C362

Notre-Dame-Shamrock-Helmet

After losing to Texas on Monday, Notre Dame was the subject of a joke by the social media department of a popular fast food chain.

Notre Dame came back from a 31-14 deficit in the third quarter to force overtime by blocking a point after touchdown attempt and returning it the other way for a score with less than four minutes to play in the fourth quarter. However, in the second overtime period, Notre Dame only managed a field goal on its possession. Texas responded with a rushing touchdown by Tyrone Swoopes for a 50-47 victory.

Despite leaving Austin with a loss, Whataburger suggested a way the Fighting Irish could still be winners.

Ouch. Gotta give them credit for capitalizing on the moment though. Well played, indeed.
