Kerry Wood rips Joe West over Joe Maddon ejection

The crankiest umpire in Major League Baseball was at it again Monday night, this time ejecting Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon in the ninth inning over a situation that surely could have been avoided.

After Jeremy Hazelbaker of the St. Louis Cardinals broke up Cubs pitcher Kyle Kendricks’ no-hit bid to leadoff the ninth, some Chicago players tried to have a mound visit to buy closer Aroldis Chapman more time to warm up. We see that all the time in baseball, and you would think West would be even more understanding of it after a guy loses a no-hitter with three outs to go.

Instead, West stopped Cubs catcher Miguel Montero in his tracks and told him not to join his teammates on the mound. That infuriated Maddon, who came storming out of the dugout to launch four-letter words at the man they call “Cowboy Joe.”

You can’t blame Maddon for being angry. West has a reputation for going on power trips, and not allowing a reliever more time to get loose is another example of one. Shortly after the incident took place, former Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood retweeted a bunch of tweets mocking West. He then added some commentary of his own:

Again, West is known for this stuff. He tosses players and managers out all the time (here’s another example), and oftentimes he is clearly looking for trouble. While you can understand him wanting to keep the game moving in that situation, there was no need to stop Montero like that and make a big spectacle out of it.

The Internet Freaked Out Over Iman Shumpert’s Surprise VMA Appearance In A Kanye West Video

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/iman-shumper-fade.jpg?fit=640%2C353

MTV

Iman Shumpert made his return to Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Well, kind of: the 2016 VMAs are taking place at MSG, and the former Knick made a bizarre appearance in the video for Kanye West’s “Fade” that no one saw coming. The video features Shumpert’s significant other, Teyana Taylor, dancing in an empty gym before going into the shower, where she stands with Shumpert.

It was an insane moment from a video just as crazy as you’d expect out of Kanye. It also led to people on the internet going wild, because no one could really believe that Shump actually showed up in the video.

A few people saw Shumpert’s cameo and had the same reaction: if he’s appearing butt naked in a Kanye video, it must be a good sign for the Cavs’ chances in 2016.

Some decided to make fun of Shumpert, pointing out that when he was on the Knicks, he never had a performance quite like this in Madison Square Garden.

But most people took a more optimistic view of Shumpert’s performance, noting that between this and the whole “he was on the team that won the NBA Finals” thing, he’s had one heck of a year.

  • The best part? Kanye tweeted out the video after his performance, so if you missed it (or if you want to watch it again), you can do that right here. The only bad news is that you have to sign up for Tidal, because of course.

West Brom announce sale to Chinese investors

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2864e3c2d692898f590d963d6f671fda71962f58.jpg?fit=640%2C435

London (AFP) – West Bromwich Albion have agreed to sell the club to Chinese investment group Yunyi Guokai (Shanghai) Sports Development Limited, the Premier League side announced on Friday.

No financial details have been announced, but former chairman Jeremy Peace was looking for 150 million pounds ($ 197.1 million, 177 million euros) when he put the club on the market last year.

The deal is subject to approval from Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority and the Premier League.

“I am proud that I will be the first mainland-Chinese owner of a Premier League club,” said Chinese entrepreneur Guochuan Lai, who will become West Brom’s new owner, in a statement.

“This historic deal will result in a rapid and significant increase in interest in the club in China, which should lead to attractive commercial opportunities.”

In an effort to reassure fans, Guochuan vowed that he had “no intention of changing the club’s ethos”.

Former owner Peace, who had held an 88 percent stake in the club, has resigned as chairman and will be replaced by former Blackburn Rovers chairman and chief executive John Williams.

The deal is the latest in a series of inroads made by China in English football.

Manchester City announced a 265 million pounds deal with Chinese consortium CMC last December.

Second-tier clubs Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers — both of whom play in the same Midlands region as West Brom — were both taken over by Chinese investors this year.

Birmingham City, another Midlands clubs, are currently in talks with Asian investors seeking to buy the club from Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung, who was jailed for money-laundering in 2014.

West Ham at home already, Europa woe for Eder

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/aa6a4361686ded976a23dcbbccabe318bbcf599a.jpg?fit=640%2C428

London (AFP) – Cheikhou Kouyate scored twice as West Ham United beat Slovenians NK Domzale 3-0 to reach the Europa League play-off round in their first game at their new ground.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Slaven Bilic’s side won 4-2 on aggregate at London Stadium courtesy of Senegalese midfielder Kouyate’s first-half double and Algerian winger Sofiane Feghouli’s late strike.

Elsewhere, Portugal’s Euro 2016 final hero Eder was brought down to earth with a bump as his side Lille were eliminated by Qabala of Azerbaijan.

Formerly known as the Olympic Stadium, West Ham’s new 60,000-seater ground hosted the athletics events at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

It has been converted to a football stadium at a cost of 272 million pounds ($ 362.7 million, 325.8 million euros), partly funded by the British taxpayer.

Thursday’s game was West Ham’s first as hosts since leaving Upton Park — their home for 112 years — at the end of last season.

They are due to officially open the stadium in a glamour friendly against Italian champions Juventus on Sunday.

With the stadium due to continue being used as an athletics venue, a retractable bottom tier of seating will be moved into place for West Ham’s matches and green fabric placed over the running track.

West Ham, missing the rested Dimitri Payet, took an eighth-minute lead when Kouyate flicked home left-back Sam Byram’s low cross from close range.

It made the Senegal international the first scorer at the ground and he added another in the 25th minute, toeing the ball in from Andy Carroll’s knock-down to register his first career brace in his 321st match.

– Spartak stunned –

Feghouli, a close-season signing from Valencia, made it 3-0 in the 81st minute by beating Domzale goalkeeper Axel Maraval at his near post.

West Ham open their Premier League campaign away to Chelsea a week on Monday.

In Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, Eder’s efforts to repeat his Euro 2016 heroics fell flat as Lille lost 1-0 to Qabala for a 2-1 aggregate defeat.

Lille had been held to a 1-1 draw at home in last week’s first leg with Eder watching on from the stands.

On Thursday he was handed a start by coach Frederic Antonetti, just 25 days after coming off the bench to score Portugal’s dramatic extra-time winner against hosts France in the European Championship final.

He played the full 90 minutes, but could not make his presence count as the Croatian Filip Ozobic got the only goal in the 34th minute for Qabala, who finished third in the Azerbaijan Premier League last season.

Eder, 28, spent the second half of last season on loan at Lille from Swansea City before making the move permanent in May.

An 89th-minute goal by Ivan Trickovski earned Cypriots AEK Larnaca a shock 2-1 aggregate win over Russian giants Spartak Moscow, who had been poised to go through on away goals.

Finland international Teemu Pukki scored a hat-trick as Danish side Brondby overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a 3-1 home win over German representatives Hertha Berlin.
