Report: Anthony Davis not considering retiring again

Anthony-Davis

There are conflicting reports on Sunday as to the future of San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis.

Amidst reports that Davis, who retired once before returning after a year and a half for this season, was about to walk away from the game for a second time, Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reported Saturday that Davis had no such thought.

Cam Inman of the Mercury News reported earlier Saturday that the Niners were trying to talk their starting right guard out of retirement just two days before the start of the regular season.

The fears apparently weren’t quite without merit. As recently as July, the Niners were reportedly concerned that Davis wasn’t back to stay. He did miss Saturday’s practice with a personal issue which helped fuel the speculation, but it sounds like the team can safely count on him lining up at right guard on Monday night.

Thomas Davis rips NFL officials for not protecting Cam Newton

The Denver Broncos got away with multiple personal fouls in their win over the Carolina Panthers Thursday night, and veteran linebacker Thomas Davis believes that has everything to do with the way NFL officials treat Cam Newton.

Newton was on the receiving end of helmet-to-helmet hits from at least three defenders. Only one flag was thrown late in the fourth quarter, and it was negated by intentional grounding. According to Davis, referees are always hesitant to flag defenders for hits on Newton because the reigning MVP is so big.

“That’s nothing new. They didn’t do anything different that hasn’t happened all along,” Davis said, via Scott Fowler of The Charlotte Observer. “It’s just something that the league is going to have to police and they’re going to have to do a better job of and start treating him like the quarterback that he is.

“They look at his size. It’s kind of like the NBA used to allow guys to get away with that against Shaquille O’Neal because of his size. But when you dig deep down into it, they talk about player safety all the time and they need to protect that player as well.”

If you remember, Newton said last season that one official told him he did not get a call because he’s not old enough. Apparently the 27-year-old has a lot working against him when it comes to drawing flags.

You can’t blame Newton or anyone in the Panthers organization for being angry over the lack of calls in Denver. While both Davis and Newton said the no-calls didn’t cost Carolina the game, these videos show how egregious they were.

Anthony Davis expected to begin 2016-17 season with no restrictions

The New Orleans Pelicans haven’t had much good news on the injury front over the last several months, so here’s a welcome development.

Pelicans general manager Dell Demps said on Wednesday that All-Star big man Anthony Davis is expected to be medically cleared for the start of next season without any medical restrictions, per John Reid of the Times-Picayune.

Davis, 23, was shut down in March of last season with a knee injury, then revealed shortly thereafter that he had been playing with a torn labrum in his shoulder for the last three years.

The former No. 1 overall pick has already missed a total 68 games in his brief professional career and seems to have a disturbing frequency of racking up minor injuries that progress into nagging injuries. So this is obviously good news for a Pelicans team that lost Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordon to free agency and will already be without Tyreke Evans and Jrue Holiday for the start of the season. Hopefully, Davis will finally be able to fully deliver on his awesome potential in Year 5 of his NBA journey.
