Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers quarterback, got some flossing done in between downs Thursday night during the opener in Denver.

NBC commentator Cris Collinsworth announced what he — and the rest of the country — saw on live television. Twitter had some fun with it:

And for those of us who don’t make the time to floss, like our dental hygienists tell us, there’s these:

Then, of course, there were those who related it to the actual game:

Later, after Broncos running back C.J. Anderson scored a touchdown, NBC’s Al Michaels said, “That’s like going to the dentist.”

Thomas Davis rips NFL officials for not protecting Cam Newton

The Denver Broncos got away with multiple personal fouls in their win over the Carolina Panthers Thursday night, and veteran linebacker Thomas Davis believes that has everything to do with the way NFL officials treat Cam Newton.

Newton was on the receiving end of helmet-to-helmet hits from at least three defenders. Only one flag was thrown late in the fourth quarter, and it was negated by intentional grounding. According to Davis, referees are always hesitant to flag defenders for hits on Newton because the reigning MVP is so big.

“That’s nothing new. They didn’t do anything different that hasn’t happened all along,” Davis said, via Scott Fowler of The Charlotte Observer. “It’s just something that the league is going to have to police and they’re going to have to do a better job of and start treating him like the quarterback that he is.

“They look at his size. It’s kind of like the NBA used to allow guys to get away with that against Shaquille O’Neal because of his size. But when you dig deep down into it, they talk about player safety all the time and they need to protect that player as well.”

If you remember, Newton said last season that one official told him he did not get a call because he’s not old enough. Apparently the 27-year-old has a lot working against him when it comes to drawing flags.

You can’t blame Newton or anyone in the Panthers organization for being angry over the lack of calls in Denver. While both Davis and Newton said the no-calls didn’t cost Carolina the game, these videos show how egregious they were.

Cam Newton flosses his teeth on sidelines

Nobody should ever be able to call Cam Newton a poor role model for children after the display he put on in Denver on Thursday. And no, we’re not talking about his play on the field.

Newton did parents everywhere a favor by flossing his teeth on the sidelines during the second half of the Panthers-Broncos game.

Of all the odd things we’ve ever seen on the sidelines during a game — and we’ve some really bizarre stuff like this — this might be the weirdest.

What, did Cam snack on some beef ribs at halftime? Did he have some meat dangling between his bicuspids that were just screaming to be picked out?

We’ve all been there before. We can certainly understand it. But it sure is awesome to know Cam is conscious of his dental hygiene even when playing football.

Cam Newton shares thoughts on Colin Kaepernick protest

Cam Newton shared his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest recently and is being criticized by some for his mostly neutral responses.

Newton sat down for an interview with ESPN’s Trey Wingo and talked about Kaepernick protesting the national anthem in an effort to call attention to the mistreatment by police officers of some African-Americans. Newton did not really take a stance on the matter, although he did say Kaepernick has a right to express his opinion.

Here’s a clip from the interview:

“What I can’t fathom is how does 1/8 of an inch, something so small, be the difference in such a big commodity in our whole lifetime, and that’s the thickness of our skin,” Newton said. “And under that, we’re all the same color. And that’s the big picture.

“A lot of scrutiny happens when the athletes start talking about race, but the truth of the matter is we just gotta do right by each other, no matter what color you are. Certain things that has happened in our life, in our lifetime, is kind of embarrassing to be affiliated with, but it still happens. Who am I to say ‘Colin you’re wrong.’ And who am I to say, you’re right. We all have the right to think whatever we want to think.”

Newton was taken to task by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who says the reigning NFL MVP was being too protective of his brand to truly share an opinion on the subject. Others called out Newton for tap-dancing around the issue.

Meanwhile, Kaepernick’s protest took a turn on Thursday when the 49ers quarterback issued a statement about his police pig socks.

NFL QB Cam Newton Takes Surprising Stance on Racism, Gets Ripped Apart by Critics

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton came under a flurry of harsh criticism on Monday after he denied football fans are “racist” toward him and said America is now “beyond” race.

“It’s not racism,” Newton said of the criticism he gets from NFL fans. “Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion.”

GQ writer Zach Baron pressed the issue, asking the star QB “what is it” if it’s not racism. He also reminded Newton of his January remarks in which he said: “I’m an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to.”

“I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not. It’s not. Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation,” Newton replied.

“You really think so?” the writer interjected.

Newton then replied, “Yeah. I mean, you bring it to people’s attention. But after that, that’s it.”

The backlash to Newton’s racism comments was quick and unforgiving.
