Dwyane Wade, in an interview with “Good Morning America” that aired Friday, addressed his cousin’s recent death in a drive-by shooting.

Donald Trump callously used the tragedy for political gain, and Wade says the presidential candidate’s words didn’t sit well with him.

The Bulls guard says his presence in Chicago goes beyond basketball.

Dwyane Wade: Return to Chicago is ‘bigger than basketball’

Dwyane Wade Bulls

Dwyane Wade says his return to his hometown of Chicago is about more than basketball.

Wade appeared on “Good Morning America” on Friday, saying that he hoped his decision to join the Bulls could help unite the city in light of recent events.

“My purpose for being back in the city is bigger than basketball. Basketball is a big part of it, of course; it’s what I do for a living,” Wade said, via ESPN. “But I think my purpose at the end of the day hopefully is to come to Chicago and be a part, be a voice that can help bring people together.”

The violence in the city hit close to home on Aug. 26, when his cousin was killed in a shooting.

“We’re coming off doing the town hall meeting, literally the night before. My mother’s on the panel, we’re using our voice, using our platform to shed some light on the city of Chicago for others to look in and see how we can all help and all come together, and hours later one of my family members is killed,” Wade said. “For me it’s tough. I want my family to grieve in private, but my name is attached to it.”

Wade has been outspoken about change in communities recently. Obviously, there is great excitement to see Wade in a Bulls uniform, but the move back home is even more significant for him.

Don Cheadle Calls Donald Trump A ‘POS’ After Trump’s Controversial Dwyane Wade Tweet

When Donald Trump wants to snag a headline, he knows how to do it. The latest headline grab took the death of NBA player Dwyane Wade’s cousin and used it for Trump’s own political gain via a Twitter post that has left many with a bad taste in their mouths. There have been a lot of reactions to Trump’s politicizing the death, but actor Don Cheadle went out of his way on Saturday to call attention to how inappropriate he felt the tweet was.

The actor took to social media this morning, Deadline reports, and didn’t hold back with his pointed criticism of Trump for taking such a sad incident and trying to use it for his own purposes.

Cheadle then found himself amid a squall of Trump supporters hurling insults at him throughout the day. Cheadle handed out replies and insults all while his Twitter icon was changed to an illustration of Andy Kaufman stepping out of a Donald Trump bodysuit.

Needless to say, Don Cheadle has made it pretty clear that he’s not a fan of Donald Trump and he will not be voting for him come this election season. Trump did sort of issue a tweet that was more in line with what a political candidate should be saying while in the public eye, but it wasn’t an apology.

Trump has not engaged with Don Cheadle or even tweeted that he was a loser. Yet.

Gabrielle Union was shocked Dwyane Wade chose Bulls

Gabrielle Union Dwyane Wade

Dwyane Wade’s decision to sign with the Chicago Bulls in free agency came as a shock to nearly everyone in the NBA world, including even Wade’s wife.

Gabrielle Union talked about her acting career and more in an interview with Basketball Insider’s Alex Kennedy that was published on Thursday. They also discussed Wade’s decision to sign with the Bulls, which Union called “shocking” given that Wade had contract disputes in the past but the two sides always came to an agreement.

“It was shocking. There’s no way around that word. It takes some getting used to,” Wade’s wife told Kennedy. “We had just built our dream home in Miami and everyone sort of had their life in Miami so it’s big move for everyone.”

Kennedy asked Union when she realized her husband leaving the Miami Heat — the only NBA team for whom he’d ever played — was a possibility.

“Even when we were on vacation, I think me and everyone just kind of assumed [we’d be back]. Like, ‘It looks kind of bleak right now, but they’ll work it out. They always work it out! They’ll work it out.’ It probably wasn’t until Denver’s offer came in that I realized. That offer was… a lot. Then there was another offer and another offer and another offer. And it was like, ‘Oh wait, hold on. Are you thinking about this?’ I mean, how can you not? When there’s an offer on the table that is, what, $ 13-15 million more than to stay home, it’s like, ‘Wow. Okay. Wow.’”

Union emphasized that Wade didn’t simply take the money, otherwise he would have accepted the Nuggets’ offer. Instead, it was a combination of more money but also opportunity and fit, which he felt the Bulls provided.

Union says the family will keep their home in South Florida and that their boys will continue to play for their South Florida AAU basketball teams. Once the family accepted dealing with the rough winter in Chicago, they grew excited for the move. One thing Union did leave out, though, is the way her advice helped facilitate Wade’s decision.
