Washington Redskins: 6-0-0-0 — 6
Live Box Score

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins will go head-to-head on Monday night. After reaching the postseason last year, both teams enter 2016 with high expectations.

Here’s what has happened so far:

Roethlisberger Connected With Eli Rogers for Another Steelers TD

Ben Roethlisberger threw a touchdown pass to Eli Rogers to increase the Steelers lead to 14-6 with 27 seconds left in the half. Dashaun Phillips deflected Roethlisberger’s pass, which then bounced off a Steelers receiver before landing in the arms of Eli Rogers.

Roethlisberger completed 16 of 21 passes for 151 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception in the first half.

Ben Roethlisberger Connected With Antonio Brown for 29-Yard Touchdown

On fourth-and-1, Roethlisberger faked the handoff to DeAngelo Williams then threw a 29-yard pass to Antonio Brown, who hauled in a beautiful catch. Steelers now have a 7-6 lead with 10:10 left in the second quarter.

Redskins Drilled Another Field Goal

Washington kicked its second field goal of the first quarter after a nice play on defense. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger tried to find Eli Rogers over the middle, but Bashaud Breeland came up with a tipped-pass interception to set up Washington’s second field goal.

Dustin Hopkins Made a 31-Yard Field Goal

Washington’s first drive ended with a 31-yard field goal to give the Redskins a 3-0 lead with 6:01 left in the first quarter. The key play was a 31-yard pass from Kirk Cousins to DeSean Jackson.

Game Preview

Washington’s Kirk Cousins had a breakout season in 2015. After appearing in just 14 games in his first three years in the NFL, Cousins posted a 101.6 quarterback rating with 29 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He finished last year with 4,166 yards– the team record for passing years in a season. Although he rose to the occasion in his first full year as starter, Cousins enters the 2016 season with more to prove, especially with long-term contract uncertainty hanging over his head.

The problem for Washington last season was on the defensive side of the ball. Their defense finished No. 28 in yards allowed, and 25th against the pass. In one of the biggest moves of the offseason, the Redskins signed All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman, which will certainly bolster their defense.

The biggest challenge for Norman and the Redskins will be slowing down star wide receiver Antonio Brown. Brown finished 2015 with 136 receptions for 1,834 yards. Norman and the Panthers had a difficult time against Brown in 2014 as Brown caught all 10 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

Even with Ben Roethlisberger sidelined in four games in 2015, the Steelers offense was ranked as the third in the NFL. Le’Veon Bell is suspended for the first three games of 2016, but the Steelers’ ground game is still strong with the return of DeAngelo Williams. Williams rushed for 11 touchdowns and 907 yards on 200 carries last season.

Pittsburgh also focused on improving their defense by drafting a pair of cornerbacks in the first and second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

A high-scoring affair is anticipated Monday night between these two teams. However, keeping Pittsburgh out of the end zone will be a tough task for Washington.

Final Score

Houston Texans 0-14-7-7 — 28
Dallas Cowboys 7-3-7-0 — 17
Box Score

The Houston Texans finished out the preseason with a road victory over the Dallas Cowboys. It was mostly a battle of reserve players as both teams rested their starters.

Dak Prescott watched the game from the sidelines as the Cowboys could not afford to lose another quarterback in the preseason. Jameill Showers got the start for the Cowboys but failed to take advantage of the opportunity. Showers finished the game 10-of-25 for 91 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Tom Savage got the start at quarterback for the Texans. Savage went 12-of-18 for 119 yards and one touchdown. Brandon Weeden was 9-of-13 for 116 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Akeem Hunt was the star of the game with both a rushing and receiving touchdown. The running back showed versatility with 44 rushing yards and 27 receiving yards.

To start out the regular season, the Texans host the Bears while the Cowboys host the Giants next Sunday.

Here’s how the game played out.

Rookie Running Back Darius Jackson Scored the First Touchdown for the Cowboys

Showers got the start for the Cowboys as they rested their starters. Showers connected with rookie running back Darius Jackson on a short pass for an 18-yard touchdown. Jackson played at Eastern Michigan and was selected in the final rounds of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Jameill Showers Gave Up a Fumble in the Second Quarter

After leading a successful scoring drive in the first quarter, Showers made a costly turnover deep inside Cowboys territory to give the Texans great field position. The Texans were able to convert on fourth and goal for a touchdown.

Brandon Weeden Connected With Keith Mumphery for a 64-Yard Touchdown

After Tom Savage got the start for the Texans, Brandon Weeden came in and wasted little time making an impact. As the pass rush collapsed on Weeden, he threw a deep pass to Keith Mumphery who went up and got the football. Mumphery alluded defenders on his way to complete the 64-yard touchdown. The play occurred with just over a minute left in the second quarter. Dallas was able to respond with a quick drive for a field goal to bring it to 14-10 in favor of the Texans.

Akeem Hunt Scored His Second Touchdown of the Game for the Texans

Early in the third quarter, Savage connected with Hunt on a short pass, and Hunt took it the distance. It marked Hunt’s second touchdown of the game and gave the Texans a 21-10 lead.

Anthony Brown Came Up With a Pick-6 for the Cowboys

Rookie cornerback Anthony Brown intercepted Brandon Weeden in the third quarter and returned it 59 yards for the touchdown. The score brought the Cowboys within four points of the Texans.

Antonio Allen Responded With a Pick-6 of His Own

Showers and the Cowboys were in their own endzone with time winding down in the fourth quarter. Texans safety Antonio Allen made a spectacular interception and ran it back for a touchdown. The interception iced the win for the Texans.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 0-0-0-0 — 0
Live Box Score

The preseason match-up between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins was moved from from Thursday night to Wednesday due to severe weather that is expected in the Tampa area. The worst of the weather from Tropical Depression Nine is expected to make landfall on Thursday.

The change was announced late Monday evening, which created a quick turnaround for players who are gearing up for their final preseason game and fighting for roster spots.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium.

Here’s what has happened so far:

Redskins Got on the Board with a 47-yard field goal

Dustin Hopkins made a 47-yard field goal to give the Redskins a 3-0 lead with 9:24 left in the first quarter.

Preview

Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said the bulk of starters will not play Wednesday night, as is the norm for the fourth preseason game. Instead, Wednesday’s game will feature backups and players who will be cut between now and Saturday’s NFL deadline to reduce rosters from 75 to 53 players.

“There are a lot of jobs on the line,” said Bucs cornerback Jude Adjei-Barimah, who is expected to play tonight. “Everybody here is trying to make a roster, trying to make this team, and this last preseason game is very important to a lot of us. We’ve got to be able to go out there and put on film [the results of] all our hard work throughout camp and be able to be evaluated by the organization. It’s very important that we get ourselves ready to go and come out here and play a clean game.”

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said the team will rest most of its starters, in addition to some veteran backups. Rookie Nate Sudfeld is expected to get the start at quarterback.

“I mean it’s not ideal to do a game a little bit early just because it kind of messes with your process of what you study each day, but I’ve been really diligent throughout the week of getting ready for this game, so I feel very prepared,” Sudfeld said, according to Redskins.com. “The funny thing is I told my quarterback coach on Sunday, I was like, ‘I feel like I could play them tomorrow,’ about Monday, kind of not thinking anything of it, so hopefully it holds true and we play pretty well. I feel very prepared.”

Fellow rookie draft picks Su’a Cravensand Kendall Fuller are expected to get their share of reps as well.

During Sunday’s game between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, Arizona scored their second run on a play you likely won’t see again anytime soon.

In the top of the fourth inning, Ross Stripling delivered a pitch that bounced before reaching catcher Yasmani Grandal. The ball ricocheted up and hit Grandal’s face mask, then dropped and got wedged between his body and chest protector.

The play was ruled a wild pitch, resulting in David Peralta advancing from first base to second base and Jake Lamb being allowed to cross home plate from third base.

The Diamondbacks would score twice in the inning to take a 3-0 lead. However, the Dodgers stormed back to win 14-3. Grandal hit his 15th home run of the season in the sixth inning to add an exclamation point to an eventful afternoon.
