ESPN’s Trent Dilfer Tells Back-Up QB Kaepernick It’s His Job to ‘Be Quiet,’ Sparking This Fiery Response

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/kaepernick-1.jpg?fit=512%2C345
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick on Monday responded to criticism from one ESPN analyst who said Sunday that it’s the job of a backup quarterback to “be quiet.”

“This is a backup quarterback whose job it is to be quiet and sit in the shadows,” EPSN’s Trent Dilfer said. “Yet he [Kaepernick] chose a time when all of a sudden he became the center of attention. And it has disrupted that organization.” Dilfer was commenting on Kaepernick’s repeated refusal to stand during the playing of the national anthem.

Following the 49ers win over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, Kaepernick fired back at the commentator.

“I think that’s one of the most ridiculous comments I’ve heard. The fact that you say, ‘You’re a backup quarterback. Stay in your place,’ that’s an issue,” Kaepernick said.

“I would ask him to really have a conversation with the families of people that have been murdered and see if he still feels that way,” Kaepernick added. “Because I bet you he doesn’t, just because he hasn’t experienced that type of oppression.”

Adam Jones backs Colin Kaepernick, explains lack of protest in baseball

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/adam-jones.jpg?fit=600%2C380

adam-jones

As NFL players choose to sit or kneel during the national anthem, some have wondered why we don’t see the same in Major League Baseball. One of the sport’s most prominent African American players, Adam Jones, has an answer.

The Baltimore Orioles center fielder spoke at length to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale about Colin Kaepernick’s protest, its meaning, and whether it could be replicated in Major League Baseball.

“We already have two strikes against us already, so you might as well not kick yourself out of the game,” Jones said. “In football, you can’t kick them out. You need those players. In baseball, they don’t need us. Baseball is a white man’s sport.”

While African Americans make up the majority of players in both the NFL and NBA, they account for only 8 percent of MLB players. As such, the sport is more conservative than its counterparts, and there could be even more severe backlash for a player who chose not to stand for the anthem.

Make no mistake, though. Jones is fully on board with Kaepernick and other NFL players who have chosen to protest.

“He believes in what he believes in, and as a man of faith, as an American who has rights, who am I to say he’s wrong?” Jones said. “Kaepernick is not disrespecting the military. He’s not disrespecting people who they’re fighting. What he’s doing is showing that he doesn’t like the social injustice that the flag represents.

“Look, I know a lot of people who don’t even know the words to the national anthem. You know how many times I see people stand up for the national anthem and not pay attention. They stand because they’re told to stand. That’s the problem. Just don’t do something because you’re told to do something. Do it because you understand the meaning behind it and the sacrifice behind it.”

Jones drew a contrast between former 49ers tight end Bruce Miller, who was charged with seven felonies after assaulting a 70-year-old man and his son. Miller has gotten significantly less attention than Kaepernick, though Kaepernick’s actions aren’t actually hurting anyone.

“He’s not receiving the ridicule and public torture that Kaepernick is facing,” Jones noted. “Is Kaepernick hurting me? No. Is he hurting random people out there? No. I support his decision. At the end of the day, if you don’t respect his freedoms, then why the hell are we Americans? It’s supposed to be the Land of the Free, right?”

Jones ultimately believes that fans want athletes to stick to sports and not share their views on social issues, but he doesn’t understand why that is.

“The outside world doesn’t really respect athletes unless they talk about what they want them to talk about,” Jones said. “Society doesn’t think we deserve the right to have an opinion on social issues.

“We make a lot of money, so we just have to talk baseball, talk football. But most athletes, especially if you’re tenured in your sport, you’re educated on life, and on more things than most people on the outside. But because Donald Trump is a billionaire, he can say whatever he wants, because he’s older and has more money? And when Kaepernick does something, or says something, he’s ridiculed. Why is that?”

Most Major Leaguers who have commented on the protests have had a negative opinion of them. It’s not a big surprise that Jones, based on his background, would have a very different view of things, and his comments are very worthy of consideration.

Kevin Durant backs Colin Kaepernick national anthem protest

Colin Kaepernick continues to get support from fellow athletes over his decision to sit out the national anthem.

Kaepernick’s new Bay Area cohort, Kevin Durant, said he fully supports the quarterback’s decision to protest.

“I’m behind anyone who stands up for what they believe in,” Durant said, via Anthony Slater of the Mercury News. “Colin Kaepernick is standing up for what he believes in. That’s what makes our country so great, right? You have the luxury to do so. He was unapologetic about it and, in his defense, I don’t think he was trying to disrespect anyone. I think he was trying to get his point across. I’m all for anyone who wants to do that. As athletes, we have this huge platform. A lot of people are watching at all times. Sometimes it may not be what you do, they like. But if you feel like it’s gonna be impactful, that’s on you. I feel like everyone should stand up for what they believe.”

With the NBA season about two months away, it will be interesting to see if Kaepernick’s protests carry themselves over to basketball. It’s been a league where players have always been bold in standing against racism, which is the heart of where Kaepernick’s protests are coming from. Perhaps NBA players will take some cues from him once the season does kick off.

NFL Commissioner Weighs in on Kaepernick Controversy

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/600x4352.jpg?fit=600%2C435
NEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell disagrees with Colin Kaepernick’s choice to kneel during the national anthem, but recognizes the quarterback’s right to protest.

Asked by The Associated Press about Kaepernick’s decision not to stand before games when the national anthem is played, Goodell said Wednesday: “I don’t necessarily agree with what he is doing.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell answers questions during a news conference in Orlando, Fla. Goodell says the league asked for, but was not given, a just-released video showing former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice hitting his then-fiancee on an elevator. Goodell says during an interview with CBS aired Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014:

But we were never granted that opportunity.” (AP Photo/John Raoux, File)

“I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we don’t live in a perfect society,” Goodell added. “On the other hand, we believe very strongly in patriotism in the NFL. I personally believe very strongly in that.”

Goodell added that NFL players having a visible platform for their viewpoints. With that comes responsibility to use those platforms properly.

“We have to choose respectful ways of doing that so that we can achieve the outcomes we ultimately want and do it with the values and ideals that make our country great,” said Goodell, whose late father, Charles, was a U.S. senator.

“I think it’s important to have respect for our country, for our flag, for the people who make our country better; for law enforcement; and for our military who are out fighting for our freedoms and our ideals.”

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback wouldn’t stand for the anthem at the team’s preseason games, with teammate Eric Reid and Seattle’s Jeremy Lane doing the same. Kaepernick has cited racial injustice and police brutality among the many reasons for his actions and said he plans to continue to not stand for the anthem during the regular season.

The 49ers open their season at home against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night.

Colin Kaepernick currently has the NFL’s top-selling jersey in the wake of his decision to protest the national anthem, and one person who helped him climb to the top of the chart is Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker.

Parker shared a photo on Instagram Tuesday night that featured him wearing a Kaepernick jersey.

Parker joins a growing list of pro athletes who have come out in support of Kaepernick, though his statement wasn’t quite as loud as the one this soccer player made.

Colin Kaepernick will donate money from jersey sales to charity

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/colin-kaepernick-1.jpg?fit=600%2C330

Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick currently has the NFL’s best-selling jersey despite not even being a starting quarterback, so you know the spike in sales has everything to do with his national anthem protest. Kaepernick knows that, too, which is why he won’t keep the additional money he has been making.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Kaepernick thanked fans for their support and vowed to donate the proceeds from his jersey sales “back into the communities.”

“I want to thank everyone who has shown me love and support, it truly means a lot!” Kaepernick wrote. “I wasn’t expecting my jersey sales to jump to number one because of this, but it shows the people’s belief that we can achieve justice and equality for ALL! The only way I can repay you for the support is to return the favor by donating all the proceeds I receive from my jersey sales back into the communities! I believe in the people, and WE can be the change!”

While Kaepernick has been bashed by plenty of people for his decision to protest the national anthem (including this boxing legend’s ex-wife), there are clearly plenty of people who appreciate what he is doing.

Colin Kaepernick to donate $1 million to underprivileged communities

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/colin-kaepernick.jpg?fit=600%2C330

Colin Kaepernick

Immediately after San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick protested the National Anthem for the first time, critics chimed in and told the multi-million dollar man to put his money where his mouth is.

Now two weeks removed from that initial protest, Kaepernick is doing exactly that.

Following Thursday night’s preseason game against the San Diego Chargers, Kaepernick revealed that he will be donating $ 1 million of his own money to underprivileged communities in need.

“I’ve been very blessed to be in this position and to be able to make the kind of money I do,” Kaepernick told reporters. “And I have to help these people. I have to help these communities. It’s not right that they’re not put in a position to succeed or given those opportunities to succeed.”

In addition to the $ 1 million donation to underprivileged communities, Kaepernick and his girlfriend, Hot 97 radio personality Nessa Diab, have donated $ 60,000 worth of backpacks and school supplies to students in Harlem and the South Bronx.

“Having a new backpack to start off the new school year helps give each student a fresh start,” Nessa said in a Thursday press release. “When we looked at everything when it comes to supplies, we found backpacks were an investment for most parents. As for the student, we wanted to ensure we found one that could last for more than a year, and that was sturdy, durable and versatile for students to use for books, sports equipment or art materials, and traveling.”

Although Kaepernick was not available to donate the backpacks in person, he did chat with the students via Facetime.

“We must invest in our youth because they are the future leaders of our community,” Colin said as part of the press release. “I want them to know that we appreciate and care for them. In doing so, we must provide all the necessary tools for them to succeed and I will do whatever I can to ensure we do that as a community.”

Kaepernick plans to continue his protest of the National Anthem, but has opted to begin kneeling as opposed to sitting to help soften the perceived disrespect of the country and its military personnel.

Colin Kaepernick Twitter Reaction: Internet Has Lots Of Support For QB’s Protest

http://www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/colin-620x436.jpg
If you’re an American and you’ve heard about Colin Kaepernick’s protest, you very probably have one of three opinions on the matter: You strongly support him, you’re strongly against him or you just don’t care and wish this story would be over.

And because it’s America and we have freedom of speech, you’re allowed to have any of those opinions, just like Kaepernick is allowed to have and express his.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has taken a lot of heat in the past week after he was noticed sitting during “The Star-Spangled Banner” in a previous preseason game, and his comments explaining why have been a topic of conversation, too.

Thursday night, he continued his protest by kneeling during the national anthem, this time during a road game in San Diego on a night where the Chargers were honoring military personnel — a mere coincidence, and something the team does every preseason.

People took to Twitter and reacted, of course. We wanted to know what those people were saying, so we did a Twitter search for “Colin Kaepernick” and scrolled through the first few hundred we saw. The reaction seemed to be very supportive of Kaepernick, as you’ll see below.

We kept searching in hopes of finding reactions on the other side of the fence in order to paint a fair picture. Unfortunately, many of those tweets denouncing Kaepernick’s decision included profane language and/or racist and derogatory comments toward Kaepernick, so we couldn’t include them in this list. But they were there, and so we did our best to find a few non-derogatory tweets to include and represent those people.

Here’s a snippet of what people were thinking Thursday night.

If Kaepernick Sits Out Anthem Tonight, He’ll Do So Amid a ‘Salute to the Military’ (UPDATE)

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/colin-3-620x415.jpg?fit=620%2C415
The National Football League has to be loving this.

In the landscape of meaningless preseason games, Thursday night’s contest featuring the San Diego Chargers hosting the San Francisco 49ers has all the makings of major media event.

Not for what happens after kickoff, mind you — but for what takes place before all that.

Because during pregame ceremonies, all eyes will be on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick — who’s reportedly starting the contest.

In this Nov. 8, 2015, file photo, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick stands on the field during an NFL football game against the Atlanta Falcons in Santa Clara, Calif. (AP Photo/Ben Margot, File)

And the big question: Will he sit out the National Anthem again?

He’s promised to do so for as many games as it takes until things get better for blacks and people of color in America.

But given what’s on tap for the pregame, sitting out “The Star-Spangled Banner” may prove a tougher-than-normal task in San Diego — because that’s when the Chargers are holding a Salute to the Military.

This game is heavily attended by service members and veterans, KSWB-TV reported, and will include the Leap Frogs parachuting into Qualcomm Stadium before the 10 p.m. ET scheduled start — as well as a Navy sailor singing the anthem.

Since Kaepernick sat out the anthem last Friday and his actions went viral, he’s had his jersey burned in effigy and was criticized by other NFL members, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, a Gold Star mom — and even his own birth mother who gave him up for adoption when he was an infant.

But others have come to his defense, including NFL legend Jim Brown and NBA icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — and perhaps most important of all, veterans.

KSWB noted several messages:
A man describing himself as an Air Force veteran wrote: “I’m with @Kaepernick7. I’m a vet. I care about people’s right to take a stand. It makes us better & smarter.”

Sunny Anderson, Food Network personality and a veteran tweeted: “I took an oath & served, so players on a team I don’t even like could have freedom of speech.”

Another tweeter listed where his military career had taken him: “West Point, Ranger School, Kosovo, Iraq, Bronze Star. @Kaepernick7 is an American hero.”

Here are some from #VeteransForKaepernick:

Kaepernick has said his controversial stance isn’t meant for military members.

“I have great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country,” Kaepernick said Sunday. “I have family, I have friends that have gone and fought for this country. And they fight for freedom, they fight for the people, they fight for liberty and justice, for everyone. That’s not happening. People are dying in vain because this country isn’t holding their end of the bargain up, as far as giving freedom and justice, liberty to everybody.”

UPDATE 11:51 p.m. ET: As expected, Kaepernick didn’t stand for the National Anthem in San Diego.

Cam Newton shares thoughts on Colin Kaepernick protest

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/cam-newton-shares-thoughts-on-co.jpg?fit=480%2C360

Cam Newton

Cam Newton shared his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest recently and is being criticized by some for his mostly neutral responses.

Newton sat down for an interview with ESPN’s Trey Wingo and talked about Kaepernick protesting the national anthem in an effort to call attention to the mistreatment by police officers of some African-Americans. Newton did not really take a stance on the matter, although he did say Kaepernick has a right to express his opinion.

Here’s a clip from the interview:

“What I can’t fathom is how does 1/8 of an inch, something so small, be the difference in such a big commodity in our whole lifetime, and that’s the thickness of our skin,” Newton said. “And under that, we’re all the same color. And that’s the big picture.

“A lot of scrutiny happens when the athletes start talking about race, but the truth of the matter is we just gotta do right by each other, no matter what color you are. Certain things that has happened in our life, in our lifetime, is kind of embarrassing to be affiliated with, but it still happens. Who am I to say ‘Colin you’re wrong.’ And who am I to say, you’re right. We all have the right to think whatever we want to think.”

Newton was taken to task by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who says the reigning NFL MVP was being too protective of his brand to truly share an opinion on the subject. Others called out Newton for tap-dancing around the issue.

Meanwhile, Kaepernick’s protest took a turn on Thursday when the 49ers quarterback issued a statement about his police pig socks.

‘Have Some F***ing Respect’: Ex-Teammate Wearing American Sniper T-Shirt Slams Colin Kaepernick

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/GettyImages-160294314-620x412.jpg?fit=620%2C412
San Fransisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been the subject of intense scrutiny since he refused to stand for the national anthem at a preseason game last week, and now one of his former teammates is joining in the criticism.

Alex Boone, who played guard with Kaepernick from 2011 to 2015, told ESPN that he wasn’t “surprised” by the move but was surely “upset and disappointed” by it.

Minnesota Viking guard Alex Boone (Stacy Revere/Getty Images)

Minnesota Viking guard Alex Boone (Stacy Revere/Getty Images)

“I mean, like I had said earlier, that flag gives you the right to do whatever you want and I understand that — Anquan said that, and I agree with that,” Boone, who now plays for the Minnesota Vikings, remarked. “But at the same time, you have to show some respect, especially in this position that we’re in, where we’re playing a game for a living — it’s almost disrespectful.”

“You see all these pictures of these veterans that have no legs and they’re standing up in their wheelchair,” he continued.

Further commenting on the issue to USA Today, Boone, who was reportedly wearing an “American Sniper” T-shirt at the time, explained that Kaepernick’s controversial decision is particularly difficult for him because his brother, a Marine, “lost a lot of friends” in combat.

While Boone said he understands his ex-teammate’s decision and his freedom to do so, he doesn’t necessarily believe it was right.

“You should have some [expletive] respect for people who served, especially people that lost their life to protect our freedom,” Boone said. “We’re out here playing a game, making millions of dollars. People are losing their life, and you don’t have the common courtesy to do that. That just drove me nuts.”

He went on to say that, if he and Kaepernick were teammates right now, the two likely “would have had a problem.”

The 49ers player doubled down on his decision over the weekend, saying he will continue to sit during the “Star-Spangled Banner” because he refuses to “show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

“To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way,” Kaepernick argued. “There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Veterans for Kaepernick hashtag blows up as QB receives support

Veterans for Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick is being slammed from all angles for protesting the national anthem by refusing to stand when it is played prior to his NFL games. The San Francisco 49ers QB is taking a stand on this matter because he wants to bring attention and change to what he feels is unjust conduct by some police officers towards black people.

Many have called Kaepernick “disrespectful” for his actions and have criticized his decision to protest the anthem. They say he is being particularly disrespectful to the military and other people who protect the country and the flag.

But one funny thing happened on Tuesday: Kaepernick began to receive support from the very people the masses said he was disrespecting. And the support came in the form of a movement on social media “#VeteransforKaepernick.”

As best as we can tell, the hashtag movement began with a Facebook post on Monday:

That post was shared on Twitter and led to a hashtag picking up steam Tuesday evening:

By late Tuesday, there were thousands of tweets sent using the #VeteransforKaepernick hashtag. Tons of people who claim to be vets said on Twitter that they fought to protect Kaepernick’s right to protest. Here’s a look at many of those tweets:

This stated things well:

‘Shame on You’: Gold Star Mom Unloads on Colin Kaepernick for Refusing to Stand During National Anthem

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/GettyImages-496596848-620x413.jpg?fit=620%2C413
San Fransisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick became the subject of heated debate — literally — when he refused to stand for the national anthem during a preseason game last week, and now a Gold Star mom is weighing in on the issue.

“My heart is exploding, my lungs are without air, my blood is boiling, my body is shaking, and tears are running down my face,” the mother, whose comments were first shared by CNN’s Jake Tapper, wrote of the athlete’s controversial decision.

Kaepernick said he refused to “show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” He argued doing so would be “selfish” because “there are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

But the unnamed Gold Star mom reminded the football player of other bodies laying in the streets — veterans who have lost their lives in combat.

“I am sitting in my living room looking outside at my American flag — flying at half staff,” she wrote. “You see, my son’s body lay in a street after an [improvised explosive device] blew up the vehicle he was fighting in. His blood stains the sands of Afghanistan. He died protecting the ideals of the flag you refuse to respect.”

“He died so that ungrateful, privileged, and arrogant men like you can be just that — ungrateful, privileged, and arrogant,” she continued. “There are brave men and women all around that stand between evil and you. Men and women willing to die to protect you because they believe in the ideals this country was founded on.”

Of his decision, Kaepernick said he is not “looking for approval,” but is just “stand[ing] up for people that are oppressed.” And on Sunday, he doubled down on his defense of the move, telling reporters he will continue to sit during the “Star-Spangled Banner” until he sees “significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to.”

But the mother of the slain soldier wondered, what about honoring veterans?

“Ask them how their heart feels when they hear the national anthem being sung? You are a public figure, someone young people look to as an example. Shame on you,” she charged. “Shame on you for your disrespect towards those who are true examples of honesty, integrity, pride, and leadership. Shame on you for disrespecting my son and his life. His sacrifice.”

Jerry Rice tells Colin Kaepernick not to ‘disrespect’ the flag

Jerry Rice

There has been no shortage of people commenting on the Colin Kaepernick national anthem protest, and the latest to weigh in is San Francisco 49ers legend Jerry Rice.

Rice sent a tweet on Monday night in which he said “All lives matter.” He also said Kaepernick should not “disrespect” the flag by refusing to stand for the anthem.

The Hall of Fame wide receiver’s comment was met with outrage from some on Twitter.

Kaepernick’s decision to protest the anthem has been a polarizing one. The NFL issued a statement saying they encourage but do not require players to stand for the anthem. Many players have either supported or opposed Kaepernick’s move. The strongest response of all came from the San Francisco Police Officers Association, which had this to say.

Now we know where the NFL’s all-time leading receiver stands on the matter.

Jim Harbaugh says he does not respect Colin Kaepernick motivation, then backtracks

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/jim-harbaugh-1.jpg?fit=600%2C346

Jim Harbaugh

Colin Kaepernick’s former coach has weighed in on his actions during the national anthem Saturday.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh did not hold back when asked about Kaepernick refusing to stand for the national anthem, and he is not taking his former quarterback’s side. Harbaugh said that he did not respect Kaepernick’s motives or the way he went about it when speaking to the media on Monday.

Harbaugh was roundly criticized on social media immediately, particularly for the “motivation” comment, which was taken by some to mean that he did not respect Kaepernick’s cause of protesting oppression. Harbaugh promptly took to Twitter to clarify his remarks.

It’s worth noting that Kaepernick and Harbaugh have long been allies on football matters. Harbaugh championed Kaepernick when the pair were together in San Francisco, and even after the coach left and the quarterback was on the outs with management, Kaepernick congratulated Harbaugh on his success at Michigan.

San Francisco police demand apology from Colin Kaepernick

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Colin-Kaepernick-covers-Beats-by-Dre-tape-3.jpg?fit=600%2C593

The San Francisco Police Officers Association is unhappy with the recent comments Colin Kaepernick made about law enforcement corruption, and the organization is demanding an apology.

In a letter addressed to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and 49ers president and CEO Jed York, SFPOA president Martin Halloran ripped Kaepernick for his “foolish statement” about the law enforcement profession.

“While we certainly acknowledge Mr. Kaepernick’s first amendment right to remain seated during the National Anthem, as inappropriate as that may be, we will not stand by while he attacks police officers in this country with statements such as, ‘People are on paid leave while people of color are killed,” Halloran wrote in the letter, which was obtained by TMZ.

The SFPOA beleives Kaepernick “embarrassed himself, the 49ers organization, and the NFL based on a false narrative and misinformation that lacks any factual basis.” Halloran invited the 28-year-old quarterback and any other NFL employee to visit the San Francisco Police Department Academy and take part in any of the simulations recruits participate in during their training.

“Not only does he show an incredible lack of knowledge regarding our profession and ‘officer involved’ shootings, but also shows a naivety and total lack of sensitivity towards police officers,” the letter continued.

“Perhaps Mr. Kaepernick could comment on the murder of 40 police officers in the United States in the past few months, or the assaults perpetrated on over 100,000 law enforcement officers in the past year. Perhaps he could lend his commentary to the over 8,000 murders that African Americans inflicted on one another in 2015. The law enforcement community cannot be continuosly blamed for all of society’s problems, including racial divide, in our country. It isn’t fair and it isn’t true.”

If Kaepernick’s goal was to start a discussion, you could certainly say he accomplished it. Countless people and organizations have already weighed in, including Kaepernick’s former coach and several of his fellow players.

Kaepernick: I’ll Sit Through the National Anthem Until ‘That Flag Represents What It’s Supposed to Represent’

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/colin-620x377.jpg?fit=620%2C377
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Defiant, and determined to be a conduit for U.S. change, Colin Kaepernick plans to sit through the national anthem for as long as he feels is appropriate and until he sees significant progress in America — specifically when it comes to race relations.

He knows he could be cut by San Francisco for this stand. Criticized, ostracized, and he’ll go it all alone if need be.

The quarterback realizes he might be treated poorly in some road cities, and he’s ready for that, too, saying he’s not overly concerned about his safety, but “if something happens that’s only proving my point.”

“I’m going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed,” Kaepernick said Sunday at his locker. “To me this is something that has to change. When there’s significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to, I’ll stand.”

Two days after he refused to stand for the “The Star Spangled Banner” before the 49ers’ preseason loss to the Packers, Kaepernick insists whatever the consequences, he will know “I did what’s right.” He said he hasn’t heard from the NFL or anyone else about his actions — and it won’t matter if he does.

“No one’s tried to quiet me and, to be honest, it’s not something I’m going to be quiet about,” he said. “I’m going to speak the truth when I’m asked about it. This isn’t for look. This isn’t for publicity or anything like that. This is for people that don’t have the voice. And this is for people that are being oppressed and need to have equal opportunities to be successful. To provide for families and not live in poor circumstances.”

Letting his hair go au natural and sprinting between drills as usual, Kaepernick took the field Sunday with the 49ers as his stance drew chatter across NFL camps.

He explained his viewpoints to teammates in the morning, some agreeing with his message but not necessarily his method. Some said they know he has offended his countrymen, others didn’t even know what he had done.

“Every guy on this team is entitled to their opinion. We’re all grown men,” linebacker NaVorro Bowman said.

“I agree with what he did, but not in the way he did it,” wideout Torrey Smith said. “That’s not for me. He has that right. Soldiers have died for his right to do exactly what he did. … I know he’s taken a lot of heat for it. He understands that when you do something like that it does offend a lot of people.”

Both Bowman and Smith are African American.

Kaepernick criticized presidential candidates Donald Trump (“openly racist”) and Hillary Clinton; called out police brutality against minorities; and pushed for accountability of public officials.

“You can become a cop in six months and don’t have to have the same amount of training as a cosmetologist,” Kaepernick said. “That’s insane. Someone that’s holding a curling iron has more education and more training than people that have a gun and are going out on the street to protect us.”

In college at Nevada, Kaepernick said, police were called one day “because we were the only black people in that neighborhood.” Officers entered without knocking and drew guns on him and his teammates and roommates as they were moving their belongings, he said.

He said his stand is not against men and women in the military fighting and losing their lives for Americans’ rights and freedoms.

Kaepernick, whose hair had been in cornrows during training camp, sat on the bench during Friday’s national anthem at Levi’s Stadium. Giants wideout Victor Cruz and Bills coach Rex Ryan said standing for the anthem shows respect.

“There’s a lot of things that need to change.”

“There’s a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality,” said Kaepernick, whose adoptive parents are Caucasian. “There’s people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable. People are being given paid leave for killing people. That’s not right. That’s not right by anyone’s standards.”

On Sunday, he stopped briefly on a side field to talk with Dr. Harry Edwards and they shared a quick embrace before the quarterback grabbed his helmet and took the field. Edwards is a sociologist and African-American activist who helped plan the “Olympic Project for Human Rights” before the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where U.S. sprinters and medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos bowed their heads through the anthem on the medal podium in their black power protest.

After swirling trade talks all offseason following Kaepernick’s three surgeries and sub-par 2015 season, he has done everything so far but play good football — and he doesn’t plan for this to be a distraction.

Coach Chip Kelly did not speak to the media Sunday. He said Saturday he still hasn’t decided on his starting quarterback in a competition between Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert, who took over the job from Kaepernick last November and has vowed to be the No. 1 again.

Kaepernick hasn’t stood for the anthem in any of the team’s three preseason games “and I don’t see it as going about it the wrong way.”

“That’s his right as a citizen,” Kelly said. “We recognize his right as an individual to choose to participate or not participate in the national anthem.”

Now, Kaepernick is prepared for whatever comes next.

“I think there’s a lot of consequences that come along with this. There’s a lot of people that don’t want to have this conversation,” he said. “They’re scared they might lose their job. Or they might not get the endorsements. They might not to be treated the same way. Those are things I’m prepared to handle. …

“At this point, I’ve been blessed to be able to get this far and have the privilege of being able to be in the NFL, making the kind of money I make and enjoy luxuries like that. I can’t look in the mirror and see people dying on the street that should have the same opportunities that I’ve had.”
