Andrew Cashner unlikely to re-sign with Marlins barring facial hair policy change

The Miami Marlins have a strict policy on facial hair, and it may cost them any chance they have of retaining at least one of their players.

Pitcher Andrew Cashner, who was acquired from the San Diego Padres at the trade deadline, said that the Marlins’ no facial hair policy would impact his decision when he becomes a free agent at season’s end.

“That is a big deal to me in free agency,” Cashner told Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, adding that he hates the policy.

Manager Don Mattingly, who was a member of George Steinbrenner’s famously beard-free Yankees, has been strictly enforcing the policy.

“It’s just who we want to be as an organization,” Mattingly said. “It’s nothing like it makes us better or makes us more disciplined.”

Some players weren’t thrilled when the policy was instituted in spring training. Mattingly himself seemingly admits that it doesn’t have any sort of impact beyond keeping up appearances. Now, while the Marlins likely wouldn’t have caved to Cashner’s financial demands anyway, it’s just another reason for certain players to disregard their overtures. It doesn’t seem to benefit anyone inside or outside the organization, and while the Yankees had the allure of simply being the Yankees to win over unconvinced players, the Marlins have no such luxury.

Joakim Noah, Andrew Wiggins and the Future of adidas

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Adidas_Noah_Wiggins_SLAM-9660.jpg?fit=640%2C427

Adidas is making moves. The brand has a clear vision of what’s coming next. Sleek performance-based apparel and sneakers are already flooding the Three Stripes’ website. And the adidas Big Boom hasn’t even happened yet.

Adidas has also pumped up their basketball roster. With Joakim Noah, Andrew Wiggins Damian Lillard, James Harden and some of the best youngins‘ coming in, they’re stacked with both good players and personalities.

This week, Noah and Wiggins hosted the Lincoln High School (Brooklyn, NY) basketball team for an afternoon of advice and mental training at the Skylight Clarkson in New York. Led by Graham Betchart, the cofounder of Play Present, Noah, Wiggins and the Lincoln players went through several mental training exercises meant to increase their ability to focus.

Betchart harped on the need to be in the moment and vulnerable. He said athletes have to be willing to fail in order to learn.

Noah talked to the kids for a solid 15 minutes before they began to “work out” their minds. He sat while the squad surrounded him in a circle, the old head prepping the next generation. After the mind-strengthening, Wiggins stood up and joked around with the high school kids for 20 minutes. Just kids being kids.

The whole event was thrown together by adidas. The brand now sponsors Lincoln. And the night before, they put on a show that featured Noah and Wiggins as models in the upcoming adidas Athletics line.

“It’s a blessing. It’s such a blessing,” Noah says about being a brand ambassador. “I’ve been wanting to do this since I was a kid. I’ve been with the brand for a long time, since ABCD Camp, where I was a ballboy.” Back in the early 2000s, he rebounded for LeBron James and Lenny Cooke. A lot’s changed for him, and the company, since then.

“The company’s come such a long way,” Noah says. “You look at the style and it’s so fresh. We came a long way from Pro Models, you know? They were nice sneakers but when you compare it to the BOOST and all the technologies they have going on now, it’s pretty unreal.”

That BOOST tech is a major selling point for the adidas Crazy Explosive, the sneaker that Wiggins will represent and play in during the season.

“I like it a lot,” Wiggins says on the brand new shoe. “I like the different color ways. I like the comfort level, the BOOST at the bottom. When you stand up and you’re wearing the show it’s like you’re standing on a big cushion. It’s dope.”

Even after winning the 2015 Rookie of the Year, averaging 20 ppg in his second season and being the face of a sneaker, Wiggins still didn’t think he would take such a major step towards brand ambassador.

“Nah, I didn’t think this would happen,” the 21-year-old says with a smile. “I thought it was cool how they showcased everything. They had the pictures on the wall, they had a bunch of models come in and model the designs. It was great, they put on a great show.”

Of course, with adidas throwing their party in New York and Lincoln, one of NY’s best-ever basketball programs in the building, native New Yorker Joakim Noah had to talk about the Knicks for a second.

“We have a lot of talent,” Noah says. “To me, when you think of the Knicks, no matter what, it’s always gonna be an underdog. The Knicks is the underdog no matter what. I’m really proud to be on this team and there’s obviously a lot of talent.

“I just wanna enjoy playing basketball,” he continues. “The last couple years have been really hard for me, in terms of injuries. I just wanna go out there and enjoy.”

Andrew Benintendi robs home run with great catch (Video)

Andrew Benintendi catch

Andrew Benintendi made a spectacular catch on Monday to rob Steven Souza Jr. of what would have been a two-run home run.

Souza Jr. smashed a ball off David Price in the eighth inning with a runner on in a 3-0 game. The blast would have made it a one-run game, but Benintendi’s catch helped keep the Red Sox up 3-0 over the Tampa Bay Rays.

“I think that’s the best catch I’ve made. I’ve never really had the opportunity to do that,” Benintendi said after the game. “I knew that it was going to go out. I was just trying to time it and I was fortunate enough to finish with it.”

Andrew Bogut rips officiating after Australia’s controversial loss to Spain

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/andrew-bogut-australia.jpg?fit=600%2C407

Australia was denied a medal in the Olympic men’s basketball tournament by the narrowest of margins, and center Andrew Bogut was about as pleased as Ayesha Curry after an NBA Finals game.

After Australia’s 89-88 loss to Spain in the bronze medal game on Sunday (a contest that featured a questionable foul call against Patty Mills with 5.4 seconds remaining, sending Sergio Rodriguez to the line where he sank both free throws), Bogut went off on the officiating.

“Obviously we are disappointed, at times we felt we were outnumbered on the court for the majority of the game,” said Bogut, per John Ralph of the Herald Sun. “It felt like we were playing a different sport. The superman dived into me and the referees bought it.

“Some of them you could see on the tape how obvious they were,” he continued. “You tap these guys and they go flying and the referees bought it. We tried to adjust knowing what they were going to do but the last two fouls were tough on us.”

Bogut, who himself fouled out in less than 14 minutes of action, then lashed out at FIBA Basketball as a whole, per Hoops Heaven.

FIBA officials are known to call games a bit more stringently than their NBA counterparts, so Bogut probably isn’t accustomed to being called for the illegal screens and arm bars he usually gets away with. That said, the officiating was somewhat up and down this tournament, and for Australia to play as well as they did and still be denied a medal in the last five seconds of their final game has to be enormously frustrating.

All things considered, Bogut probably won’t be looking back on Rio with too many fond memories.

Andrew Bogut has great comment about facing Team USA

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/andrew-bogut-1.png?fit=561%2C284

Andrew Bogut

The Australians may be underdogs entering their Group A game against the United States on Wednesday at the Summer Games in Rio, but don’t tell that to Andrew Bogut.

The longtime NBA center refuses to be intimidated by Team USA even though the U.S. team is stacked with NBA stars. After Australia beat Serbia on Monday, Bogut talked about the Boomers’ attitude entering their game with the US.

Bogut wanted to issue the autograph warning to his teammates because he’s seen such things happen before.

“(Facing the Americans is) the ultimate test. It’s the best team in the world, the best players in the world, so I think if we go out there with the right mind-set and compete with them, win or lose we’ll be happy with that,” Bogut told USA Today.

Bogut’s fear about having the proper attitude is legitimate. Back at the London Olympics, we saw an opponent ask Kobe Bryant for an autograph after losing to the US (video here).

How are you supposed to beat an opponent when you’re starstruck? The Australian team is full of NBA players like Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova and Aron Baynes in addition to Bogut, so maybe they’ll enter the contest with the attitude that they belong there.

Andrew Bogut drops fantastic quote after Australia defeats France

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/andrew-bogut.png?fit=561%2C284

Andrew Bogut

Underneath that tough Aussie exterior is quote the charismatic character.

After Australia picked up the 87-66 victory over France in the opening men’s basketball contest at the Rio Games on Saturday, center Andrew Bogut delivered this outstanding one-liner about the team’s defensive mentality heading into the competition, per John Schuhmann of NBA.com

The 31-year-old Bogut, who finished with 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists in the upset win, should definitely be pleased. Australia indeed managed to be “pricks” on the defensive end Saturday, playing with physicality and purpose while also showcasing patience and precision on the offensive side of the ball.

Bogut has had his own struggles early on in Rio, but, through it all, he’s managed to stay the same hard-nosed bruiser we’ve all come to know and love. Australia will need that kind of mindset if they are to survive a Group A bracket that also houses the United States.

Andrew Bogut mocks Rio over poor athlete housing conditions

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Andrew-Bogut-Olympic-village.jpg?fit=600%2C411

Andrew-Bogut-Olympic-village

It’s no secret that the Olympic village where the athletes are staying in Rio is not the most glamorous of places, and Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut provided us with a closer look at it on Monday night.

Using the hashtag #IOCLuxuryLodging, Bogut mocked the housing conditions in a series of tweets. In one of them, he showed himself rigging up a shower curtain so he and his roommate could “shower and not flood the place.”

This should be fun.

If you remember, the Australian Olympic Committee previously deemed its section of the Olympic village in Rio uninhabitable, listing a number of alarming concerns about the accommodations after running some early tests. Bogut, of course, is playing for the Australian national basketball team.
