Late Saudi penalties catch Iraq napping in World Cup qualifier

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/6c0bc553caabf3db2351d8f632d681870e72bd93-768x563.jpg?fit=640%2C469

Shah Alam (Malaysia) (AFP) – Nawaf Al Abed buried two penalties in the last nine minutes as Saudi Arabia came from a goal down to beat regional rivals Iraq 2-1 in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday.

War-torn Iraq, playing their home fixture in Malaysia’s Shah Alam, struck early through Mohannad Abdul-Raheem and  looked headed for victory as the clock ticked down.

But on 81 minutes, after Saad Natiq brought down Hassan Muath in the box, Abed drilled home a powerful equaliser from the spot.

And there was more to come after Abed won another penalty which he converted in the 87th minute to hand the Saudis their second win in two third-round matches so far.

It takes Abed’s tally to three late penalties in Saudi’s two games after he hit the 84th-minute winner from the spot in last week’s 1-0 victory over Thailand.

The result badly dents Iraq’s chances of winning one of the two automatic berths for Russia 2018 from the six-team Group B, after they lost last week’s opener 2-0 to Australia.

South Korea held by war-ravaged Syrians in World Cup qualifier

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/83f7159ac27c11f6b7a056acf6c4fc24279c84d8.jpg?fit=640%2C415

Seremban (Malaysia) (AFP) – South Korea hit a speed bump in their bid to reach a 10th World Cup as they were held to a goalless draw on Tuesday against a Syrian side that is unable to play at home due to the country’s long-running, bloody conflict.

The frustrated South Koreans dominated possession during the match held in the Malaysian city of Seremban but largely failed to threaten the Syrian goal.

In their best chance, midfielder Lee Chung-Yong was denied thanks to a fine save by the Syrian goalkeeper Ibrahim Alma early in the second half.

The frantic Koreans stepped up the pressure in the final 20 minutes, but Syria defended in numbers to secure the draw despite playing eight minutes of extra time after a number of Syrian injuries during the night.

In all, South Korea peppered Syria with 14 shots but just two of them were on target, compared to seven Syrian shots overall, four of them on target. The Koreans also had 12 corner kicks to just one for Syria.

South Korea, who dispatched China 3-2 last week, were expected to notch an easy win against Syria, who lost 1-0 to Uzbekistan in their previous match.

With the Syrians unable to play at home, the match was shifted to Malaysia last week after the collapse of talks that would have seen the Chinese territory of Macau play host.

It was held at the 20,000-seat Paroi Stadium in Seremban, south of the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

Five teams that could surprise the college football world in 2016

As the 2016 NCAA football season gets underway, debate generally focuses on national championship contenders and potential Heisman Trophy winners. But each year there are a number of surprise teams that make waves across the college football spectrum, and 2016 will be no different.

Here’s a quick look at five Power-5 teams that could alter the course of their conferences this season.

5. Nebraska Cornhuskers, Big Ten

Nebraska finished with a 6-7 record in head coach Mike Riley’s first season with the team, and much of that can be attributed to their minus-12 turnover margin. In six of those seven losses, the Cornhuskers were within eight points, but weren’t able to overcome the opposition’s points off of turnovers. They also suffered a 10-point loss to Purdue with quarterback Tommy Armstrong sidelined due to injury.

In 2016, Nebraska will look to shore up those turnover issues and benefit from relatively weak schedule, which features only three daunting games: Ohio State, Iowa and a non-conference matchup with Oregon.

With six starters returning on offense, Nebraska will once again aim to put up big numbers on the arm (and legs) of the aforementioned Tommy Armstrong. The key with his development will be to limit mistakes, feel comfortable with his check-downs and above all else, remain healthy. If Armstrong can do that, he has strong depth at both running back and wide receiver, which can only serve to benefit from the return of De’Mornay Pierson-El.

Defensively, Nebraska must do a better job limiting points per game (27.8 in 2015) and yards per play (5.9 in 2015). And while some of blame for points allowed can, again, be attributed to their minus-12 turnover margin, the same can not be said for allowing 5.9 yards per clip.

The back seven will likely handle their own for Nebraska, so it’s the improvement up front along their revamped defensive line that will need to come through. If they can do a better job rushing the passer and a better job setting the edge, Nebraska could very well surprise in the Big Ten.

4. Auburn Tigers, SEC

Heavily-hyped a year ago, the Tigers fell flat on their faces, finishing the 2015 season with a record of 7-6. As a result, expectations are not very high entering 2016.

Of course, we’ve seen this story before. Auburn finished 3-9 in 2012 and had been completely written off in 2013 before erupting on an unexpected journey all the way to the BSC National Championship Game.

For whatever reason, it seems like Auburn and head coach Gus Malzahn thrive on being the underdog. And needless to say, they’ll be exactly that in 2016.

The Tigers will enter the season unranked, facing uncertainty at the quarterback position and having dismissed running back Jovon Robinson as the result of disciplinary issues. But the one luxury they do have is a solid defense that will likely keep them competitive in every game — even against the other SEC West powerhouses.

Auburn will also benefit from opening the season with five straight home games, including the season kickoff on Sept. 3 against Clemson. And of the three top-10 teams they’ll face, only one of them will be an away game (at Alabama on November 16).

While the Tigers aren’t likely to reach the College Football Playoff in 2016, there’s enough reason to believe they’ll out-perform many of the last place predictions and create some waves in the SEC.

An eight-win season and a bowl game are not entirely out of the question.

3. Oklahoma State Cowboys, Big 12

After starting 10-0 last season, Oklahoma State suffered three consecutive embarrassing losses to Baylor, Oklahoma and Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl that have subsequently dropped their stock in 2016. But with 17 total starters returning and five of their first six games coming at home, things could be set up for the Cowboys to shake off the demons of 2015 and finally get over the hump.

Of course, getting over that hump has been and will be the biggest issue for Oklahoma State.

Can the Cowboys rise to the occasion down the stretch and become a top-15 team or will they once again be relegated a top-25 standing? Games against Texas Tech, who could also surprise in 2016, TCU (preseason No. 13) and Oklahoma (preseason No. 3) will ultimately be what determines that.

With such a successful franchise, a top-25 finish is expected, but that’s not the kind of “surprise” we’re looking for out of Oklahoma State this time around. Rather, the surprise will be resurrecting the sort of promise that surrounded the program from 2010-2013.

With the Cowboys’ passing attack likely to again be one of the best in the country, it will be up to Barry J. Sanders, a transfer from Stanford, to jump-start their struggling ground game. That added dimension will only make an already dangerous offense even more dangerous.

Defensively, Oklahoma State will want to reproduce what they did in 2015 in terms of turnovers, ultimately finishing the season with a plus-13 margin (+12 in victories). The more opportunities they can give their high-powered offense, the better their chances overall.

If the Cowboys can stay healthy, this might finally be the year they get over the hump and challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 title.

2. Washington Huskies, Pac-12

In a bit if irony, the Huskies are the obvious dark horse in the Pac-12 as the 2016 season gets underway.

Washington finished ahead of Oregon in the final preseason polls, receiving eight first-place votes to the Ducks’ one. Of course, they fell well behind the Stanford Cardinals, who led the way with 24 first-place votes.

The question is, can Chris Petersen, who has experienced tremendous success in his coaching career, return himself and the program to winning ways?

After a 7-6 finish last season, it would be easy to be skeptical. However, their record aside, Washington finished in the top 25 of most advanced analytics and they appear to be trending in the right direction with 17 starters returning in 2016.

With All-America candidates Sidney Jones (cornerback) and Budda Baker (safety) leading the way defensively, the Huskies could once again top the Pac-12 in points allowed per game (18.8 in 2015). Meanwhile, offensively, sophomores Jake Browning, who impressed in his true freshman campaign, and running back Myles Gaskin will benefit from the return of wide receiver John Ross (knee injury).

For the Huskies, it all boils down to their games against Stanford and Oregon, who have long been a thorn in Washington’s side. If they can win both, we’ll all look back on the soft preseason hype and consider it justified.

1. Louisville Cardinals, ACC

Bobby’s Petrino’s Cardinals are a fringe team after winning six out of their final seven games last season, and will have an early opportunity to prove whether they are contenders or pretenders in the ACC. They got off to a great start on Thursday night with a 70-14 thrashing of Charlotte.

Already with a convincing win in hand, Louisville will take on projected College Football Playoff favorites, Florida State and Clemson, over the first five weeks of the season, hosting the Seminoles on Sept. 17 and then traveling to take on the Tigers two weeks later on Oct. 1.

With eight starters returning defensively, including linebackers Devonte Fields and Keith Kelsey, the Cardinals should again be ranked among the ACC’s best. And with three starters returning along the offensive line, it will afford sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson, who just completed his first full offseason under Petrino, some continuity he didn’t benefit from a year ago.

If Jackson, a dual-threat who finished last season with 2,800 combined yards (1,840 passing, 960 rushing) and 33 combined touchdowns (12 passing, 11 rushing), can continue his progression, Louisville’s offense may begin to catch up to its defense. The eight touchdowns he put up against Charlotte indicate Jackson may be on his way to a huge season.

Ultimately, the Cardinals are trending in the right direction, but it’s their early games against NCAA powerhouses that stand in their way. They’ll need to play much better against Florida State than they did a season ago, where they fell 41-21, and capitalize on the missed opportunities that cost them an early victory against Clemson (20-17).

Jaylen Brown’s Father Is A 7-Foot World Champion Boxer

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/jaylen-browns-father-is-a-7-foot.jpg?fit=640%2C360

Celtics rookie Jaylen Brown plays with a fearlessness on both ends of the court. He may have gotten that trait from his father, Marselles Brown, a 7-foot professional heavyweight boxer.

At 48 years old, Marselles recently came out of retirement to show his sons, Jaylen and NFL prospect Quenton, that he never gave up on his dream. Sure enough, Marselles recently was crowned the 2016 World Boxing Union (WBU) World Champion.

Marselles recently spoke to boxing247.com:

“My main motivation for coming out of retirement was to show my kids that I never gave up on my dreams. So I didn’t want them to give up on theirs. I am extremely proud of both my sons. I am especially proud of Jaylen. He is an extraordinary athlete and very smart, he’s even planning to go to Harvard next year, so I am extremely proud of both my sons, really. The only advice I could give them when entering into the professional arena, they are going to be in for a rude awakening. They are going to see how nasty the entertainment industry really is. I want them to know to stay on course and don’t let anybody distract them and they’ll be just fine,” said Brown.

Here’s a look of Marselles in the ring against King Ipitan in Las Vegas back in June of 2000.

World Famous

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/greg-marius-ebc-ceo.jpg?fit=640%2C425

Rucker Park is named after the legendary Holcombe Rucker, whose mission was getting kids off the street and on to the court. He fully understood the impact basketball could have on saving people from crime and violence. He was successful, too.

Through the last 50 years, the Rucker, as it’s now known, has seen dunks by Julius Erving, blocks by Wilt Chamberlain, jumpshots by Lew Alcindor and crossovers by Nate Archibald. It’s become the greatest place to see outdoor basketball, thanks in large part to the man who transitioned it from Holcombe’s vision to its modern day version.

That man is Greg Marius, a former musician and basketball player who’s from New York. In June 1980, Marius and his team were challenged to a pickup game by a rival squad. They crushed them in front of the whole neighborhood and before long, the Entertainer’s Basketball Classic would start.

As the founder and man who still runs the most famous tournament in basketball, Marius has been on-hand for all of it. He’s seen careers launch and stall, and even kickstarted a few players by himself.

SLAM caught up with the living legend at Rucker Park on a live afternoon to talk hoops and history.

SLAM: Why does New York love basketball so much?

Greg Marius: This is one of the sports that we always play because it’s everywhere. We’ve got basketball courts everywhere.

SLAM: Why do basketball and hip-hop go hand-in-hand?

GM: I think it’s because of tournaments like us. We’ve blended it together and everyone just gravitated to it.

SLAM: There are always a million little kids running around the park. What is it about the EBC that brings the neighborhood’s kids together?

GM: A lot of kids know, especially right here, this park is legendary. So many players been here. To be in this neighborhood and know the legends that came through here, and you be able to play at the same court, it just helps with them wanting to be doing the same thing as well.

SLAM: Who’s the best NBA player to ever come through here?

GM: The best NBA guy? I could say, but I really can’t. You had KD, you had Kobe, you had Vince Carter, you had Allen Iverson. The list goes on. The feeling is I better get up there first and get a seat, or I’m gonna be outside.

SLAM: What about the best rapper or entertainer?

GM: Chris Brown, R. Kelly. Chris Brown is the best to me. He’s good.

SLAM: What’s your best story from all your years here?

GM: My best story is definitely AI. When he came up here, he was sitting on my man’s couch. He said he was gonna play tonight. He got here, he seen the crowd and the out of bounds line was everybody’s feet. So he said it’s ‘the first time I’ve played somewhere where I can’t even see the out of bounds line.’

You had two of the top about to become NBA players in the backcourt together. Steph Marbury was in the backcourt with Allen Iverson. They were a week away from the Draft. Imagine them playing here, taking the chance of being hurt and not being drafted? And they played as hard as ever. No NBA player has ever done that.

My first time even thinking about putting a wood floor down, I gave the idea to Nike because they wanted to do a World Basketball Festival up here. I said the only way I can make it happen is you gotta agree to have a wood floor and then I can donate the wood floor to somebody. We donated it to a center across the street.

They finally finished it about midnight. I sat in here with the lights on, just looking like, ‘Oh my God. I can’t believe this is really happening.’ It happened for the whole summer. Then we ended up buying our own wood floor. This year is the first year I didn’t put it down because it’s a lot of work.

SLAM: Why does every pro that comes through the EBC play so hard?

If they don’t, they gonna shown up like Jerry Stackhouse did. He thought just cause he was in the League, he could just come up here and play. These guys that they playing against is guys that didn’t make it or didn’t have the opportunity to make it and they wanna prove that I was just as good as you. You better show them why you in the League getting a couple million dollars.

SLAM: Why has the EBC lasted for over 30 years?

GM: EBC’s lasted so long because I’ve always been a step above everybody else. I know everybody’s gonna come watch. You mimic something and that’s good flattery. When they still doing something, I’m doing something two years later. We’ve lasted that long because I don’t think small. I’ve always looked and said, ‘I gotta see what’s hot, I gotta see what’s happening with social media, I gotta see what’s happening with the young kids.’ And I stay grounded to the streets.

SLAM: What was your playing style back in the day?

GM: My playing style was mostly jumpshots. I could shoot back then. I didn’t have the handle but I could shoot. And I could pass. Back then it was the rappers. Crash Crew thought they could play. And my crew really could play. We had to play and we beat them by 59 points. From then, I started playing with Pearl Washington, I had Gary Springer, Walter Berry, Richie Adams. That was our team. Eventually, I had to take a backseat and say let the ballplayers really play. I took over the command.

SLAM: You have a relationship with Adam Silver, right?

GM: That’s my boy. Adam Silver been up here several times. When he wasn’t commissioner yet, he brought David Stern and Bill Clinton with him. To have a President in this park, no park ever could say they had a President, they had celebrities like Denzel Washington, artists like Jay Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, Chris Brown. And every top NBA player. All tournaments can say I had the neighborhood guys that made it to the League, but I’ve had guys that are legendary. From Michael Jordan to Pearl Washington, Kobe, LeBron. Keep naming names. They’ve been here.

Pogba completes world record 105 mn euro Man Utd return

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/e9ea200ed433997ad357b264c960e2ef97d436bf.jpg?fit=640%2C427

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – The world record for a transfer fee was shredded Tuesday when French superstar Paul Pogba completed a sensational return to Manchester United from Juventus for 105 million euros ($ 116 million).

After a weeks-long wrangle, United announced Pogba had signed a five-year contract, marking his return to a club that had let him go for a token fee in 2012.

In Turin, Juventus confirmed media reports that Pogba had been transferred for 105 million euros, which will be paid over two years.

The fee may rise by five million euros “on achieving given conditions,” it said without further details.

The sum, equivalent to 89 million pounds, smashes the 85 million pounds for the transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013, “thus making Pogba the most valuable player in the sport’s history”, Juventus said.

“This is the right club for me to achieve everything I hope to in the game,” said Pogba.

“I am delighted to rejoin United. It has always been a club with a special place in my heart and I am really looking forward to working with Jose Mourinho.”

The newly-appointed Portuguese has been tasked with bringing back the glory days to the 20-time English champions after three lean years since Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

– Pogba the key –

And the former Chelsea boss believes Pogba can inspire United’s revival.

“He has the chance to be at the heart of this club for the next decade and beyond,” said Mourinho.

“Paul is one of the best players in the world and will be a key part of the United team I want to build here for the future. He is quick, strong, scores goals and reads the game better than many players much older than he is.”

Pogba made just seven appearances during his previous spell at the club as a teenager before leaving for Juventus when his contract ran out.

He now returns as one of the world’s most famous players after winning four consecutive Serie A titles and leading France to the Euro 2016 final.

“Thanks @juventusfc and all Juventini. Goodbye means nothing, it is the time we spent together that matters,” Pogba posted on his official Twitter account.

It is the first time since now Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane joined the Spanish giants as a player in 2000 from Juventus that Madrid haven’t got their hands on the world’s most expensive player having also bagged Cristiano Ronaldo from United in 2009 for a record fee.

United brought the long-running transfer saga to an end in the early hours of the morning UK time.

The reported fee does not include agent’s fees. The transfer had stalled for weeks over how the two clubs would share the sizeable payout to Pogba’s representative Mino Raiola.

And the huge cash outlay will lead to questions over how Ferguson — one of the greatest managers of talent in football — allowed Pogba to slip out of United’s hands four years ago over differences with Raiola.

In his 2015 book ‘Leading’, Ferguson described his first meeting with Raiola as “a fiasco”.

“He and I were like oil and water,” Ferguson wrote.

“From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to ingratiate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus.”

Raiola, who also represents two of United’s other new signings, Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan and star Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is set to make millions from the deal.

Mourinho insisted United’s financial muscle should be a source of pride not embarrassment.

“When other people break records, I don’t think it’s a reason to be sad. I think it’s a reason to be proud with the dimension of a club that can do that and can attract players of this dimension.”

However, the Portuguese boss has hinted Pogba’s arrival will signal the end of United’s spending spree.

“Our fundamental market is 75 percent done,” he said during United’s pre-season tour of China.

“When we sign one midfield player that crucial work will be done.”

Mourinho’s reign got off to a successful start on Sunday as Ibrahimovic scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield.

Metta World Peace expects to play in NBA next season

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/metta-world-peace-lakers.jpg?fit=580%2C374

Metta World Peace Lakers

Metta World Peace is not done with his NBA career. In fact, he thinks he could still be a key contributor for the right team.

“Absolutely. The NBA is always on the front burner,” World Peace told ESPN’s Ian Begley when asked if he still intended to play next season.

World Peace said he’s still waiting to hear from teams, but he takes it personally when people think he can’t still play.

“I’m waiting for teams. I can still play,” World Peace said. “I can play, it’s not even a question man. But, you know, sometimes you don’t get in the game, man. What are you going to do? I’m not going to be upset, I’m going to support. So if I don’t play, like this year on the Lakers I could have averaged 15 or 20 on the Lakers if I played, easily. But you know, I’ll be supportive [if I don’t play]. But the only thing that gets me frustrated with the whole basketball is people think I can’t play anymore. So as a man, I take that personally.”

World Peace’s assessment of his scoring punch seems a bit optimistic, but hey, good to see he’s not lacking in confidence. He never has been. It remains to be seen where he’ll latch on this season, if he even can.

Standing on the famed Kingdome playground, located right in the middle of the King Towers public housing projects In East Harlem, five-star Class of 2017 prospect Mohamed Bamba and his older brother Ibrahim share some laughter as they go back and forth on memories on this very same blacktop while on the set of our photo shoot.

While the court is known for its summer pro-league, the Kingdome Classic, which saw NYC legends like Walter Berry, Ed Pinckney, Rafer Alston and Ron Artest all pass through and partake in the action over the decades, for Mo and Ibrahim, it’s just simply the playground located across the street from their apartment on the other side of Malcolm X Boulevard—and where Midnight Madness has been given a new meaning.

About three years ago, Bamba, who hoops with PSA Cardinals in the Nike EYBL summer circuit, along with his brother, began partaking in summer pick-up runs at midnight at the hallowed court along with local hoopers, taking advantage of the lights that illuminate the floor at dusk.

Bamba-1

“You can’t call fouls,” says Bamba of the action, which he says ran to as late as 3 a.m. on some nights. “It’s hard-nosed basketball. It’s a good workout. There are men out there. Like, men. Fights break out. But I love it and embrace it.”

Last summer, though, the cops came and shut it all down. The crowds gathering on and around the cement bleachers were growing exponentially, and the police didn’t want to risk any more incidents.

Yet, it’s in these situations when it becomes evident that Bamba’s place in the community goes beyond hoops.

“Our demeanor toward cops is just completely different, especially after all the shootings that have been happening,” says the 6-11 center, who took it upon himself to speak with the police about reconsidering their decision. “I just respectfully went to an officer and was like, Excuse me sir, a bunch of my friends would like to hoop here for a bit. It’s all out of respect and love.”

A few days later, the playground was once again opened to hoop at night. In an area where the relationship between police officers and the community, particularly the youth, is fragile at best, Bamba’s outlook and maturity has developed differently than the average East Harlem teenager.

It’s not his profile as a top-3 national prospect, but his experiences outside of his environment the past few years that have allowed for him to see progression and upward mobility in a different light than many of his neighborhood peers.

Bamba-2

Bamba, whose family hails from Mali and whose older brother Sidiki Johnson hooped at Arizona, Providence and Wabash Valley, has been attending out-of-state boarding schools since the eighth grade. He spent eighth and ninth grade at Cardigan Mountain School in New Hampshire before transferring to the Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania for his sophomore year. There, he helped lead the school to its first state title in any sport after averaging 18 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks per game last season as a junior.

“You went from seeing skyscrapers to cows,” says Bamba, the youngest of six siblings, of leaving in 8th grade. “It was a cultural shock. But I feel I adjusted pretty well quickly. When I left, my mom actually encouraged it. She didn’t want me to be around the hood. She knew I was smart enough to not feed into my environment.”

Blessed with a crazy 7-8 wingspan, impressive athleticism and agility for his size, as well as great hands and mobility in the paint, it’s his full potential—still years away—that has scouts and college coaches alike drooling.

“My hunger to make Harlem a better place for everybody is what inspires me,” says Bamba, who has said he’s looking to visit Harvard among the high-major programs vying for his services. “It’s what makes me want to run harder when I’m running the floor or jump higher when I’m blocking a shot. That’s always in the back of my mind. This place is a diamond in the rough and I’m going to show everybody that.”

Metta World Peace: ‘I Can Still Play’

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/metta.jpg?fit=640%2C360

Free agent forward Metta World Peace says he still has plenty left in his basketball tank.

MWP, 36, isn’t ready to transition into coaching just yet.

The veteran bruiser claims that, had he not been glued to the bench, he could have put up big numbers in Los Angeles last season.

Per ESPN:

Q: What are your plans for next season? Are you headed back to training camp with the Lakers? You’ve talked about a potential future in coaching. Is that on your radar?

MWP: “Right now, I’m life coaching a lot of people that are in the NBA. I can’t say [who]. But I coach a couple players. But it’s not a thing where I’m going to hide and be that perfect mentor. I just give them the best advice I can and live my life accordingly. I’m doing that now and one day I would love to coach. The Lakers are tattooed in my heart. They gave me a second chance when everyone was down on me, they gave me a chance to win a ring. The city of Los Angeles, they put up with me. Because in our world, the world of corporate basketball, you should act accordingly, you know? And I don’t like to act accordingly (smiles). I’m just trying to be authentic. I’m trying, as much as possible, to keep that if I coach one day.”

Q: Are you talking with teams right now?

MWP. “I’m waiting for teams. I can still play. I can play, it’s not even a question man. So as a man, I take that personally. But at the same time I’m able to still focus on making sure Julius Randle is doing his thing, and he’s focused, making sure I can give back. But when the season’s over, then I like to explain that I can play, and I can bust people’s ass. But the fans have to understand, it’s not up to me. It’s so frustrating to keep hearing it from the fans. ‘Come back to New York, come to Chicago. Why didn’t you play.’ It’s so frustrating at times.”

Bryce Harper would love to close an inning in the World Series

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Bryce-Harper.jpg?fit=600%2C366

Bryce-Harper

If Bryce Harper one day hits a walk-off home run that clinches a World Series title for the Washington Nationals, no one will be surprised. If he closes out Game 7 of the World Series by striking out the final batter, that will come as quite the shock.

But a kid can dream, right?

Harper was a guest on the latest episode of MLB Network’s “Play Ball,” which is a show for kids. When host Harold Reynolds asked him what position he would like to play other than outfield, Harper said he would love to catch a big league game. He also spoke about wanting to be a closer.

“If I could catch a big league game and just be able to work with the pitcher and do that, I’d definitely do that,” Harper said, according to Scott Allen of The Washington Post. “But if I could close one inning, in the ninth, in Game 7 of the World Series, it would be unbelievable. One of those two.”

Harper caught some games during his lone season at the College of Southern Nevada, so we’re much more likely to see him behind the dish than on the mound. We’re not going to see him in either location during a World Series game.

For now, Harper will just have to focus on hitting entertaining moonshots like this. But if the Nationals ever find themselves in Game 7 of the World Series with their entire bullpen battling a vicious stomach bug, they know exactly where to turn.

Jimmy Walker has been a professional golfer for 15 years, including the past 10 as a full-time member of the PGA Tour.

While he’s enjoyed a good bit of success, he has yet to get the words “major tournament winner” on his resume.

He is trying to change that at the 2016 PGA Championship, which is being played July 28-31 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. After two rounds of the rain-delayed event, Walker was tied with Robert Streb atop the leaderboard at 9-under, 2 strokes better than the field.

So who is Jimmy Walker? Keep reading to learn more about him:

Jimmy Walker Bio

Walker, 37, was born on January 16, 1979, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

His family moved to San Antonio, Texas, when Walker was a child. He was taught the game by his father, who was a scratch golfer. Walker attended New Braunfels Canyon High School before playing collegiately at Baylor University.

The 6-foot-2 golfer turned pro at 22 in 2001.

Walker is married to the former Erin Stiegemeier, whom he met in 2004 at a Nationwide Tour event where she was volunteering. The couple has two sons and the family now calls Boerne, Texas, home.

Walker’s home course is Cordilleria Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, in Boerne.

Jimmy Walker Career Stats

Since turning pro 15 years ago, Walker has 8 career professional wins — 5 on the PGA Tour and 3 on the Web.com (formerly the Nationwide Tour). His first PGA Tour victory was at the October 2013 Frys.com Open and his most recent W was at the March 2015 Valero Texas Open, an event he won by 4 strokes over Jordan Spieth.

Walker, who is currently ranked 48th in the world, has amassed over $ 19 million in prize money on the PGA Tour, including nearly $ 1.5M in 2016.

2014 was a breakout season for Walker. That year, he made 23 of 27 cuts and won 3 times. He added 10 top 10s and 19 top 20 finishes. Walker’s wallet also got fatter as he won almost $ 5.8 million in course earnings, a career-best.

Walker has never won a major tournament, but has 3 top 10 finishes in 18 starts. Again, 2014 proved to be Walker’s finest season to date. He finished tied for 8th in the Masters, tied for 9th in the U.S. Open, tied for 26th at the Open Championship and tied for 7th in the PGA Championship — all career-best finishes.

The 2004 Nationwide Tour Player of the Year was also a member of the 2014 Ryder Cup team and 2015 Presidents Cup squad. Walker accounted for 2.5 points during the Ryder Cup, a 16.5 to 11.5 victory by Europe over the U.S. Walker won his Sunday’s singles match 3 & 2 over Lee Westwood.

For the 2016 year, Walker is 50th in the FedExCup Standings with 752 heading into the PGA Championship at Baltusrol. While Walker packs a wallop off the tee (300 yards per drive), his short-game has been outstanding this year, ranking in the top 10 in a number of approach categories.

He does so with a Titleist driver, irons, wedges, balls and a Scotty Cameron putter. Walker also uses a TaylorMade 3-wood.

Jimmy Walker Hobbies

There aren’t many professional golfers in the world who share the same off-the-course hobbies as Walker does.

Drive for show, putt for dough by day and an astrophotograher by night.

Astrophotographer? Yes, in his spare time Walker uses an astroimager to take photos of the skies at night, capturing stars, galaxies and nebulas, to name a few subjects.

Walker takes it seriously, as does Celestron, an optics company specializing in products like telescopes, microscopes and binoculars. The company is one of Walker’s sponsors.
