Giovani dos Santos wins MLS Player of the Week for Week 27

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/usa-today-9519254.0.jpg?fit=640%2C426

While the spotlight was on his new-slash-old LA Galaxy teammate, Gio dos Santos had himself a fantastic game this weekend.

The LA Galaxy is on everybody"s minds right now. Most of that has to do with Landon Donovan"s surprise return last week after retiring in 2014, but a fair amount is also due to the exploits of Giovani dos Santos.

The Mexican international had probably the most consistent week around, as he scored four goals in two games, and earned the accolades of the voting panel in winning SB Nation"s MLS Player of the Week award.

Considerable questions remain for the Galaxy at this point in the season, as they are generally good on defense and sometimes good on offense but have had a ton of injuries and some international absences taking away their best players at times, and are therefore wildly inconsistent. Despite that, they are still second in the Supporters" Shield standings and if Dos Santos is playing well, one figures they"ll get results more often than not as we head into the playoffs.

Full results for Week 27, with first-place votes getting three points, second-place votes receiving two points and third-place votes earning a point each:

2016 US Open scores and bracket: Novak Djokovic advances via walkover; Angelique Kerber wins Wednesday

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/usa-today-9509466.0.jpg?fit=640%2C426

Djokovic is into the third round despite not having to play on Wednesday, while Kerber"s bid to take the No. 1 ranking is alive and well.

Novak Djokovic will advance to the third round at the US Open, and if the goal was for him to see the court for less time than he did in his four-set opener, then he achieved it effortlessly. Unfortunately this happened because Jiri Vesely had to bow out of the tournament due to injury, and he was set to be Djokovic"s opponent on Wednesday.

Angelique Kerber, the second seed and highest in action on Wednesday for the women, made it through her second-round opponent, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, in straight sets. Kerber is hot on the heels of a silver medal at the Rio Olympics, and is eyeing the top ranking in the world for women"s singles.

Serena Williams is the current No. 1, but Kerber was one of three women with a chance at earning the top spot when the tournament started. She kept things on track with her win over Lucic-Baroni, 6-2, 7-6(7). Garbine Muguruza was one of the other women capable of earning the top spot, but she suffered an early upset and was bounced from the tournament on Wednesday.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils were the other top-10 seeded men in action on Wednesday. Tsonga, the ninth seed, took down James Duckworth, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Monfils, the No. 10 seed, bested Jan Satral in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3.

As far as upsets go, there weren"t many. However, the ninth seed on the women"s side, Svetlana Kuznetsova, found herself eliminated after losing her second-round match against Caroline Wozniacki. Of course, Wozniacki was once a top player herself, and though she is unseeded she is a tough draw for anyone. Her victory over Kuznetsova can"t be described as a massive upset by any means.

Wozniacki won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The biggest upset saw unseeded American down fifth seed Milos Raonic in four sets, 6-7(4), 7-5, 7-5, 6-1.

Below is a full list of singles results from matches that include seeded players. If a match does not have a result, it"s not yet completed and will be updated later.

Olympics 2016: Team USA"s Ryan Crouser wins gold in men"s shot put

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Screen_Shot_2016-08-18_at_8.24.36_PM.0.0.png?fit=640%2C426

The Americans finished 1-2 in the shot put.

Ryan Crouser can throw an iron ball farther than anyone else. He threw the 16-pound shot put an Olympic record 22.52 meters (73"10.75) to win Olympic gold in thrilling fashion on Thursday in Rio.

Crouser couldn"t contain his excitement after his Olympic record throw. He held his arms high in victory for moments after the throw.

Joe Kovacs of the U.S. finished in the silver medal position with a throw of 21.78 meters -- a throw that would have won many Olympic titles. Tomas Walsh of New Zealand won bronze with a throw of 21.36 meters.

Tomasz Majewski of Poland won the last two golds in shot put, in 2008 and 2012. In London he won with a throw of 21.89 meters, which beat out Germany"s David Storl (21.86 meters) and the U.S."s Reese Hoffa (21.23 meters). He finished sixth this time around.

Crouser and Kovacs continued a strong U.S. tradition in the shot put. Team USA has medaled every year since 1984, and Adam Nelson (2004), Randy Barnes (1996) and Mike Stulce (1992) are all recent Olympic champions.

Crouser was a world junior champion in 2009 -- and he won a silver in the discus -- but hadn"t won a medal as a senior competitor until Thursday.

Jimmy Walker has been a professional golfer for 15 years, including the past 10 as a full-time member of the PGA Tour.

While he’s enjoyed a good bit of success, he has yet to get the words “major tournament winner” on his resume.

He is trying to change that at the 2016 PGA Championship, which is being played July 28-31 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. After two rounds of the rain-delayed event, Walker was tied with Robert Streb atop the leaderboard at 9-under, 2 strokes better than the field.

So who is Jimmy Walker? Keep reading to learn more about him:

Jimmy Walker Bio

Walker, 37, was born on January 16, 1979, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

His family moved to San Antonio, Texas, when Walker was a child. He was taught the game by his father, who was a scratch golfer. Walker attended New Braunfels Canyon High School before playing collegiately at Baylor University.

The 6-foot-2 golfer turned pro at 22 in 2001.

Walker is married to the former Erin Stiegemeier, whom he met in 2004 at a Nationwide Tour event where she was volunteering. The couple has two sons and the family now calls Boerne, Texas, home.

Walker’s home course is Cordilleria Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, in Boerne.

Jimmy Walker Career Stats

Since turning pro 15 years ago, Walker has 8 career professional wins — 5 on the PGA Tour and 3 on the Web.com (formerly the Nationwide Tour). His first PGA Tour victory was at the October 2013 Frys.com Open and his most recent W was at the March 2015 Valero Texas Open, an event he won by 4 strokes over Jordan Spieth.

Walker, who is currently ranked 48th in the world, has amassed over $ 19 million in prize money on the PGA Tour, including nearly $ 1.5M in 2016.

2014 was a breakout season for Walker. That year, he made 23 of 27 cuts and won 3 times. He added 10 top 10s and 19 top 20 finishes. Walker’s wallet also got fatter as he won almost $ 5.8 million in course earnings, a career-best.

Walker has never won a major tournament, but has 3 top 10 finishes in 18 starts. Again, 2014 proved to be Walker’s finest season to date. He finished tied for 8th in the Masters, tied for 9th in the U.S. Open, tied for 26th at the Open Championship and tied for 7th in the PGA Championship — all career-best finishes.

The 2004 Nationwide Tour Player of the Year was also a member of the 2014 Ryder Cup team and 2015 Presidents Cup squad. Walker accounted for 2.5 points during the Ryder Cup, a 16.5 to 11.5 victory by Europe over the U.S. Walker won his Sunday’s singles match 3 & 2 over Lee Westwood.

For the 2016 year, Walker is 50th in the FedExCup Standings with 752 heading into the PGA Championship at Baltusrol. While Walker packs a wallop off the tee (300 yards per drive), his short-game has been outstanding this year, ranking in the top 10 in a number of approach categories.

He does so with a Titleist driver, irons, wedges, balls and a Scotty Cameron putter. Walker also uses a TaylorMade 3-wood.

Astrophotographer? Yes, in his spare time Walker uses an astroimager to take photos of the skies at night, capturing stars, galaxies and nebulas, to name a few subjects.

Walker takes it seriously, as does Celestron, an optics company specializing in products like telescopes, microscopes and binoculars. The company is one of Walker’s sponsors.
