UCF coach Scott Frost talks trash despite blowout loss to Michigan

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/scott-frost.jpg?fit=600%2C367

Scott Frost

Give credit to Central Florida head coach Scott Frost for at least being able to see the silver lining in a bad situation. Actually, the Knights head coach might even be slightly delusional.

Though UCF lost to Michigan 51-14 on Saturday, Frost was boasting about what his team did better than the Wolverines.

“It’s hard to say when the score is what it is, but we came in here and out-hit those guys today,” Frost said after the game via MLive.com. “Standing on the sideline, there was no doubt who was hitting harder. Our guys came in hungry and wanting to do that. It’s rare you can come into Michigan and rush for 300 yards on them. They had to run a fly sweep in the fourth quarter to get to 100.

“I give our defense a ton of credit … there’s a lot to fix but there’s also a lot to really be excited about.”

Not many coaches would be so positive after a 37-point beatdown, but Frost is. Maybe his attitude and excitement will spill over to his players and help the program rebound from the loss. Though some would question whether it matters if you’re holding a team to around 100 yards rushing if you allow them 328 yards passing, but who’s really paying attention to the numbers? He better hope Jim Harbaugh doesn’t hear about the comments because you know how the Michigan coach is liable to react.

UCF is 1-1 after beating South Carolina State in its first game.

D’Angelo Russell Talks Brandon Ingram, Kobe, Luke Walton and More

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/D-Russ.jpg?fit=640%2C437

No one seems to be happier with the Lakers’ recent changes than D’Angelo Russell. After a franchise-worst 17-65 record last season, the Lakers parted ways with Coach Byron Scott, who went 38-126 in his two seasons in L.A. In April, the organization hired Luke Walton, whose demand for a head coaching job was high after leading the Warriors to a 39-4 start as the team’s interim coach last season.

The Kobe Bryant era is now in the rearview window, so that leaves Russell, 20, to step in to lead a team that features nine players under the age of 25.

Prior to finishing with season averages of 13.2 points and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 41 percent from the field (35 percent from the 3-point line), Russell’s rookie season was a roller-coaster ride. He started the first 20 games before getting pulled from the starting lineup. There was obvious friction between Russell and Scott; the coach’s minutes restriction put a cap on D’Angelo’s ability to show what the No. 2 pick in the 2015 Draft was really capable of. Some games he scored in double digits and others—29 to be exact—he had less than 10 points. Then there was the incident with teammate Nick Young that added even more negative attention to the team’s already disastrous season.

Russell used the adversity of his rookie season as motivation and led the Lakers’ summer league team—which featured this year’s No. 2 Draft pick, Brandon Ingram, to a 3-0 record. During his summer league stint, Russell had some impressive performances, including a buzzer-beating three against the Sixers and 22 first half points against the Warriors. Those performances have the Lakers’ fan base eager to see what this Walton-led regime can do in the regular season.

We caught up with Russell after he played Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare at Call of Duty XP in L.A. to see if he’s really as nice in COD as his teammates claim, what his relationship with new Coach Walton is like, passing along advice to Brandon Ingram and much more. Check it:

SLAM: Despite all the ups and downs from last season, what did you learn about yourself?

D’Angelo Russell: I mean, I went through a lot last year, so I would just say I feel mentally strong that whatever happens from this point on can’t break me, you know? So it’s like whatever God throws my way, it’s not going to break me. I’m prepared for it.

SLAM: What’s your relationship with Brandon Ingram been like so far?

DR: That’s my guy! I think he’s going to be successful in this League. He’s a funny dude and is real quiet ’til you really get to know him.

SLAM: Any advice you’ve given him as he prepares for his rookie season?

DR: I told him to embrace the pressure. What he’s going through now is what I went through as far as being the No. 2 pick, all the attention is on you and everybody wanting to see what you can do. Now I look back on what I went through last year and I was like, ‘That was the pressure I had?’ And I kind of didn’t embrace it. Embrace it, like, go get it and go attack it. That’s what I tell him—to go have way more success in your first year than I had.

D

SLAM: As of Luke Walton’s hire in late April ’til now, what are some of the things you guys have talked about?

DR: Luke is a great dude on and off the court and we’re just excited. Every time I talk to him, it’s talking about the next way to be better as a whole, as a group. And he’s one of the most positive guys I know, too. My college coach [Ohio State’s Thad Matta] was the most positive guy I knew and Luke is right there in competition with him. I’m just blessed to have those guys.

SLAM: Before I even said Luke Walton’s name, you gave a “Hell yeah!”-type expression. Was that because you’re really looking forward to having him as your coach?

DR: Yeah, I just know how good we’re going to be and we’re going to be going down the right path as far as being the best we can be. And I feel like everybody is all in and with his demeanor, mentality and the way he carries himself, the way he supports us, the way he is as a coach, I feel like if somebody walked in the gym and didn’t know who he was, they wouldn’t be able to tell that he was the head coach. He doesn’t come off like that. He comes off as a player, honestly, and a vet. I just know that’s the successful way to go in this league.

SLAM: Have you spoken to Kobe at all since his retirement?

DR: Actually I haven’t, no.

SLAM: The team has been participating in early morning Breakfast Club workouts. How has that helped build more of a camaraderie with the young core?

DR: I would just say the dedication. Every team in the League has those guys that are working and everybody is just working. You got guys on the team that are taking their rest ‘cause they’ve been in the League multiple years. I feel like the more we grow as a team, the success that we had, we don’t want to go from that. If that’s coming in everyday working out together early—even if we’re 10 years in—just stick to that routine.

SLAM: So what’s that Breakfast Club playlist looking like?

DR: Man, our trainer [Marco Nunez] kind of leaves it up to us, but he goes by Mexican Mondays, sometimes it’s Michael Jackson Tuesdays—you never know because he’s there before everybody. We’ll walk in and he might be playing old Michael Jackson or he might be playing some new [Lil] Uzi or whatever. It’s really up to the day and who’s there early that gets to pick to the music.

SLAM: What can we expect to see from you more on the court this upcoming season?

DR: Dominate. Just dominate every chance I get. No taking plays off, taking every possession as if it’s the last and just really competing at a high level.

SLAM: Jordan Clarkson recently said that aside from himself, you, Larry Nance Jr, Roy Hibbert and Anthony Brown were the top Call of Duty players on the team last year. Is anyone else nice at COD?

DR: I honestly don’t know. We got a lot of vets on our team so I’m not sure if they even know what Call of Duty is, but I would say that’s about it. Maybe Julius [Randle]. He’s a fan and is good at it.

SLAM: If you could pick one or two other players and form a squad, would you guys come out with the W against one of these top teams participating in the Call of Duty Championships?

DR: Oh yeah, I’d get my boy Devin Booker and Karl-Anthony Towns and we’d be successful.

SLAM: What are some of your favorite new features from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare?

DR: I would say the characters. In the previous versions of Call of Duty, the characters were limited—maybe four characters and they only had one specialty. Here, there’s multiple different specialties and characters that you can choose from and you can keep getting upgrades for those.

Bowles: Jets have “A lot” of Trade Talks Going on

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Jace-Amaro-1.jpg?fit=640%2C524

According to Kimberly Martin of Newsday, Jets head coach Todd Bowles says the Jets are involved in “a lot” of trade talks as the deadline for final roster cut-downs to 53 approaches.

While major trades between teams are a rare NFL occurrence, it’s not uncommon for a team to part ways with a player for a late-round draft pick to add depth at a position of need before final cuts.

The Jets do have a few players who may have some value in any late-round swaps or another bottom of the roster player.  Here are a few to keep an eye on.

QB Geno Smith- There were rumors earlier this week that the Jets were receiving calls regarding Smith’s availability, but no word on what the Jets were expecting in return or what clubs were offering, if anything at all.

TE Jace Amaro- Amaro looked good early on in training camp but that hasn’t translated in to games.  The tight end has dropped several passes in the preseason and coughed up a costly fumble in last nights preseason finale, possibly sealing his fate with the Jets.  A team intrigued with the skill set of the former second-round pick may be willing to fork over a late-rounder to see if they can get him trending in the right direction.

ILB’s Bruce Carter and Taiwan Jones- With David Harris and Erin Henderson set to start for the Jets at inside linebacker, they have a glut of options to back the pair up.  First of course would be first-round draft pick Darron Lee, with Bruce Carter and Jones behind him. Carter is a solid pro who has had himself a good preseason with the Jets, while second-year player Taiwan Jones was the best player on the Jets defense last night.  Jones would be a candidate to be poached by another club if Gang Green wanted to carry him on their practice squad as they did last season, but  a team with a need for some depth at ILB might want to give the Jets a call.

RG Brian Winters- Owner of 28 career starts, Winters enters the final season of his rookie deal as a solid but unspectacular player.  With fellow guard Craig Watts quietly enjoying a solid camp, Winters could be expendable for a team in need of an experienced interior lineman.

OLB Trevor Reilly- Reilly had the Jets’ lone sack against the Eagles, but has garnered very little playing time this pre-season and was truly under-utilized in 2015 as well.  A special teams standout who sits firmly on the bubble with other, younger linebackers making a strong push, Reilly wouldn’t likely fetch any more than a conditional 7th round choice.

When all is said and done, we may not see any deals at all, but there’s no denying that for the first time in years, the Jets could be looking at the possibility of parting ways with legitimate NFL-level talent thanks to a roster that’s been well-built for the most part by GM Mike Maccagnan who will be a busy man over the next 24 hours while the Jets get their roster down from 75 to 53.

Nationals, Wilson Ramos reportedly have yet to hold extension talks

Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos has been having a textbook contract year, but the team still has yet to bat an eye.

According to a report by Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post on Thursday, the Nationals and Ramos still have yet to hold contract extension talks.

“They have told me absolutely nothing still,” Ramos was quoted as saying. “I’d like [to have my future here], but those are decisions they make … They haven’t made any calls or communicated with us. We’re still waiting.”

Ramos, 28, has been absolutely raking in 2016 with a .331 batting average and a .917 OPS to go along with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs in just 91 games. He becomes a free agent after the season.

Also topping out as a solid defensive catcher, Ramos has done more than enough to earn a rich payday this coming offseason. We’ll just have to wait and see if the Nationals, who also have 23-year-old backstop Pedro Severino lurking on standby, will be the team to shell it out for him.

Russell Westbrook in talks with Thunder about contract extension

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/russell-westbrook.jpg?fit=600%2C327

Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook is in talks with the Oklahoma City Thunder about a contract extension, according to a report.

The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski says Westbrook’s agent is in serious talks with the Thunder about extending the guard’s current deal, which expires after the upcoming season.

The extension they’re discussing would be for two years plus a player option for a third. In total, the three-year deal would be worth $ 85 million.

Westbrook is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after next season.

With the salary cap and influx of new money set to increase in the coming years, why would Westbrook want to sign an extension now instead of waiting to test free agency?

Well, Westbrook is only set to make $ 17.8 million this season, but the extension would bump that up to a $ 26.5 million max salary. He would make $ 28.5 million the year after, and his player option would be for $ 30.6 million in 2018-2019. It would be hard to imagine him beating that money on a per-season basis.

After Kevin Durant left the Thunder for the Warriors last month, initial reports said Westbrook would not discuss a contract extension with Oklahoma City. But the latest information has suggested that Westbrook is motivated by Durant leaving and now wants to show what he can do as OKC’s unquestioned leader. Signing on with OKC for two more years would give Westbrook that chance. The option would also allow him to become a free agent in a few seasons if he wants to see what other teams have to offer.

Mets reportedly engaged in trade talks with Reds for Jay Bruce

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/jay-bruce-cincinnati-reds-2.jpg?fit=600%2C460

The New York Mets are apparently trying to assemble a star-studded cast of characters in their outfield.

According to a report by Mark Sheldon of MLB.com on Saturday, the Mets are “very involved” in a pursuit of Reds right fielder Jay Bruce, though no trade appears to be imminent.

The three-time All-Star appears to have at least a fifth of the league on his tail this trade season, but the Mets definitely look like one of the more intriguing destinations. Pairing Bruce in right with Yoenis Cespedes in left and the Curtis Granderson-Michael Conforto duo in center would give the reigning National League champs arguably the deepest outfield squadron in all of baseball.

Bruce, 29, is also comfortable hitting cleanup and would give a big-time boost to the Mets provided that they can piece together the right package for him.
