UCF coach Scott Frost talks trash despite blowout loss to Michigan

Scott Frost

Give credit to Central Florida head coach Scott Frost for at least being able to see the silver lining in a bad situation. Actually, the Knights head coach might even be slightly delusional.

Though UCF lost to Michigan 51-14 on Saturday, Frost was boasting about what his team did better than the Wolverines.

“It’s hard to say when the score is what it is, but we came in here and out-hit those guys today,” Frost said after the game via MLive.com. “Standing on the sideline, there was no doubt who was hitting harder. Our guys came in hungry and wanting to do that. It’s rare you can come into Michigan and rush for 300 yards on them. They had to run a fly sweep in the fourth quarter to get to 100.

“I give our defense a ton of credit … there’s a lot to fix but there’s also a lot to really be excited about.”

Not many coaches would be so positive after a 37-point beatdown, but Frost is. Maybe his attitude and excitement will spill over to his players and help the program rebound from the loss. Though some would question whether it matters if you’re holding a team to around 100 yards rushing if you allow them 328 yards passing, but who’s really paying attention to the numbers? He better hope Jim Harbaugh doesn’t hear about the comments because you know how the Michigan coach is liable to react.

UCF is 1-1 after beating South Carolina State in its first game.

Team USA Hockey Coach Warns Players What Will Happen if They Sit for National Anthem

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/GettyImages-450320837-620x394.jpg?fit=620%2C394
The coach of Team USA for the upcoming World Cup of hockey is standing by his vow to bench players who refuse to stand for the national anthem.

Coach John Tortorella told ESPN Tuesday, “If any of my players sit on the bench for the national anthem, they will sit there the rest of the game.”

According to ESPN, Tortorella reiterated his remarks Wednesday.

“I’m not backing off,” Tortorella said. “I’ll tell you right now. Try to understand me. I’m not criticizing anybody for stepping up and putting their thoughts out there about things. I’m the furthest thing away from being anything political. No chance I’m involved in that stuff.”

He added that he has a son who is on his third deployment to Afghanistan as a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces and that America is a great country:
Listen, we’re in a great country because we can express ourselves. And I am not against expressing yourselves. That’s what’s great about our country. We can do that.

But when there are men and women that give their lives for their flag, for their anthem, have given their lives, continue to put themselves on the line with our services for our flag, for our anthem, families that have been disrupted, traumatic physical injuries, traumatic mental injuries for these people that give us the opportunity to do the things we want to do, there’s no chance an anthem and a flag should come into any type of situation where you’re trying to make a point. It is probably the most disrespectful thing you can do as a U.S. citizen is to bring that in. Because that’s our symbol.

Tortorella’s remarks follow a controversy surrounding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest of the national anthem.

He said a member of the U.S. Army recently addressed the team.

“We are playing hockey,” Tortorella added. “Other people are doing real stuff. This gentleman who spoke to us this morning is doing the real stuff. Life and death. We just want to give to our country in our own little way. Quite honestly we are entertainers. What this man talked about in our locker room and what he does casts a huge shadow over us as far as what we’re doing.”

Rangers manager forcing coach to leave team to watch son play QB for Texas

Shane Buechele pass

One of the Texas Rangers’ coaches is being forced to take a leave … but it’s actually for a good reason.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister is insisting his bench coach Steve Buechele leave the team on Sunday to go watch his son, Shane, make his college debut as a true freshman quarterback for Texas.

“If he’s still here, I might walk out and tell the umpires to throw him out,” Banister said of Buechele, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Gerry Fraley.

Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong has not publicly named a starting quarterback, but all signs — including Banister’s decree — point to Shane Buechele starting Sunday night against Notre Dame.

Shane Buechele threw for 73 touchdowns and rushed for 21 scores during his high school career at Lamar High in Arlington. He played brilliantly in the spring game in April, which put him on track to claim the starting job for the Longhorns.

D’Angelo Russell: ‘Luke Walton Is Not a Head Coach That Will Sit Back And Watch Other Coaches Train Players’

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/dangelo_russell.jpg?fit=640%2C360

It’s no secret that D’Angelo Russell and Byron Scott were at odds last season. But now that Luke Walton is at the helm, Russell has already noticed a change in how the team is run.

Yesterday, the Lakers unveiled the name of the organization’s new training facility and Russell had high-praise for his new coach.

Via Lakers Nation:

“He’s one of the best people I know, as far as off the court,” Russell said of his new head coach on Wednesday. “c I feel like I can call him anytime. He’s not like a head coach that will sit back and just watch his other coaches and colleagues just train other players, he’s always involved. He’ll get out there and play with you if he wants. It’s just great to have a young coach like him in the building.”

Russell was impressive during the Las Vegas Summer League and the Lakers’ fan base is expecting big things from the former No. 2 overall pick.

Yasiel Puig helps coach first base for Dodgers’ minor league affiliate

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/1f61c.png?fit=72%2C72

Yasiel Puig

How is Yasiel Puig’s exile at Triple-A Oklahoma City going? Not too badly, actually. He’s even getting some coaching experience.

On Sunday, Puig stood in as the team’s first base coach, offering his teammates high fives and encouragement.

Puig’s response? He was only trying to help.

Puig is also hitting a healthy .375/.420/.641 at Triple-A, so he’s taken his recent demotion about as well as you could have possibly expected him to. Nevertheless, it’s unclear if he’ll get a recall when rosters expand on Sept. 1. He’s almost certainly available in a trade, though reports vary as to how much the Dodgers are demanding in exchange for him.

Pistons assistant coach Tim Hardaway facing drunk driving charge

Detroit Pistons assistant coach Tim Hardaway is facing drunk driving charges stemming from an incident last April.

According to a report by Jermont Terry and Derick Hutchinson of Local 4 News in Detroit, Hardaway was pulled over near his Beverly Hills home, and court records show that his BAC was .17. It’s unclear based on the report if the UTEP product was arrested during the incident.

The 49-year-old Hardaway, who was a five-time All-Star and a five-time All-NBA selection during his 13-season playing career, was charged with “operating with high blood alcohol content.” He is said to be fighting the charges but will have limited driving privileges for the time being.

A Pistons spokesperson has confirmed that the team “is aware of the situation” but has no further comment at the moment. Meanwhile, Hardaway’s attorney says that the case is still pending but that they are “working towards a resolution” to avoid a possible trial.

Hardaway is about to enter his third season as an assistant for Detroit under head coach Stan Van Gundy. Hardaway’s son, Tim Jr., is a guard for the Atlanta Hawks.

Tunisian coach banned for two years after fight

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/b000473cba8d63baebc650e3751605142597c4ae.jpg?fit=640%2C445

Tunis (AFP) – The coach of Tunisian club Etoile du Sahel, Faouzi Benzarti, has been suspended for two years after violent clashes during a game against rivals Esperance Tunis, the Tunisian Football Federation announced on Friday.

A fight broke out around the hour mark during the match on Tuesday, with Benzarti and Esperance physio Yassine Ben Ahmed the main protagonists.

Police had to intervene to break up the touchline brawl.

Ben Ahmed has also been banned from football for two years, with both men receiving 20,000-dinar fines ($ 9,155).

Esperance won the Tunisian Cup quarter-final tie 1-0.

Violence is commonplace in football in the north African country, and in May four Stade Tunisien players were handed six-month jail terms for attacking an opponent during a top-flight match.

Coach K smacks down reporter about boat question

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/coach-k-hair.jpg?fit=455%2C312

The U.S. men’s and women’s basketball teams are not staying in the Olympic village along with the rest of the athletes at the Summer Games in Rio. Instead, they’re staying aboard a cruise ship, which has led to interest and questions from the media.

After Team USA beat Venezuela 113-69 on Monday in Group A play, men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski was asked by a French reporter about the team’s accommodations. He had quite the response to the reporter.

“Well, we don’t live on a boat. We’re staying on a boat,” Coach K said via the Raleigh News & Observer’s Luke DeCock. “I actually live in Durham, N.C., and have a swimming pool. Once in a while I get on a raft and lie in there. But I’ve never really thought about living on a boat. Since 1992 the U.S. teams have stayed in different locations and because of the accommodations here, that was good.

“And it’s not our boat. We’re not the only people on the boat. There are other people on the boat that we see, that we say ‘good morning’ to, ‘hello.’ We’ve actually made friends on the boat. I never knew I would have boat friends. In fact now that I’m talking about it, I might go buy a boat. And put it in my — I’d have to have a bigger swimming pool. It’s a place to stay and we’re here to play basketball.

“And I’ll tell you what, the people in Rio have been unbelievable as far as their treatment of us and their hospitality. We’re fortunate to be here for the Olympics whether we’re on a boat or not.”

Who knew that one simple question like that would lead to such a lengthy and explosive response from the coach? You give a rant like that and people get scared off of asking questions about it in the future, which may have been the coach’s motivation.

Between this and his finger-wagging at an opposing player back in March, we’re seeing more and more that there’s a testy side to Coach K.

A’s strength coach investigated for planting camera in weight room

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/oakland-coliseum.jpg?fit=600%2C328

Oakland Coliseum

Oakland A’s strength and conditioning coach Michael Henriques was suspended and is under investigation for planting a hidden camera in the team’s weight room last month, according to a report.

Yahoo’s Tim Brown reports the story and says Henriques set up the camera on July 24 so he could follow the team’s players while the A’s were on the road. Henriques wanted to make sure players were working out and rehabbing properly while the team was out of town.

Though Henriques’ intentions were good, team executive Billy Beane was furious with the coach’s actions.

“This was the misguided action of one employee,” said Billy Beane, the A’s executive vice president of baseball operations. “We hired an independent investigator. While the employee’s intentions were good his judgment was very poor.”

A player discovered the planted camera and informed the team’s players union rep, Sean Doolittle, who contacted the union about the matter. Cameras are not allowed to be planted like this because it is considered a violation of privacy.

Argentina name Edgardo Bauza new coach

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/16aaaa5d804e4c47bfbdd3aeac66cfabb336d02e-768x557.jpg?fit=640%2C464

Buenos Aires (AFP) – Argentina named coach Edgardo Bauza to run the national team Monday, as the nation seeks to regain its football prowess and convince superstar Lionel Messi to return from early retirement.

Bauza, 58, takes on the job after a strong season at Brazilian club Sao Paulo, which he coached to the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores.

“We hope he will have the success we all need,” said Armando Perez, the president of a committee named by FIFA to whip things into shape at the crisis-plagued Argentine Football Association (AFA).

He told a press conference Bauza would be in Buenos Aires on Friday to give more details on his plans for the team.

The new coach faces the stigma of being the default choice.

A string of potential coaches including Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid, Jorge Sampaoli of Sevilla and Mauricio Pochettino of Tottenham Hotspur reportedly declined the job.

“We were in talks with a lot of people, and it seems Mr Bauza is the best,” said Perez.

Bauza has won two Copa Libertadores — one in 2014 with Pope Francis’s favorite team, San Lorenzo, the other in 2008 with Ecuadoran side LDU Quito.

He takes over an Argentina smarting from Barcelona star Messi’s abrupt retirement announcement, the departure of coach Gerardo Martino and a series of disappointing losses in big tournaments — most recently in the Copa America final, the catalyst for Messi’s exit.

Messi, 29, left the pitch in tears after that loss to Chile, saying “For me, the national team is over.”

Bauza’s number one job will be to convince the Barcelona star and five-time World Player of the Year to reconsider.

“He’s in contact with Messi,” said Perez.

Meanwhile, Bauza must get Argentina ready for two key dates on the 2018 World Cup qualifying trail: against Uruguay at home on September 1, and away at Venezuela on September 6.
