Five best college football performances of Week 2
http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/lamar-jackson-1.jpg?fit=600%2C342
Each and every week, players across the nation step up and put on a display. More often than not, they are the popular names from the college football world — Heisman hopefuls, stars from Power 5 school or up-and-comers. But that’s not always the case.
Every now and then, a few surprises find their way to the surface with career performances. Players become household names and stars are born.
Ultimately, there’s never a shortage of noteworthy individual performances. And with Week 2 of the season now in the books, we take a look at the top five offensive performances from across the nation.
5. Skyler Howard (Quarterback, West Virginia)
A week removed from one of his most accurate performances ever, Skyler Howard followed up with one of his most explosive performances ever.
Facing an unexpected potential upset by Youngstown State on Saturday, Howard put the Mountaineers on his shoulders and rallied them to 24 unanswered points and an eventual 38-21 victory.
Howard completed four passes that went at least 45 yards, finishing the game just shy of 400 passing yards total. His 50 yards rushing pushed him over that total yardage milestone, which is made even more impressive given that he couldn’t practice until Friday due to strained ribs.
“You’re going to be sore after game one, after not being hit all spring, all camp,” Howard told the Centre Daily Times after the game. “It’s nothing that’s not expected. You’ve got to fight through it, but it was fine today. I felt pretty good out there.”
Of the quarterbacks who passed for more than 375 yards in Week 2, Howard’s quarterback rating of 203.6 was second only to Drew Lock (and we’ll have more on him shortly).
All in all, it was a tremendous showing for the senior.
Full line: 20-of-33 for 389 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Eight carries for 50 yards (6.3 ypc).
4. Trent Taylor (Wide receiver, Louisiana Tech)
Trent Taylor’s name won’t be as common to hear as the others on this list, but the Louisiana Tech wide receiver deserves recognition for his impressive performance in a 53-24 victory over South Carolina State nonetheless.
After a four-hour lightning delay and a relatively slow start, Taylor and Louisiana Tech eventually began to light up the sky once again, which included 11 receptions for a career-high 178 yards and three touchdowns courtesy of the senior. The three touchdowns also tied his career-high.
“They do a lot of movement and like to switch it up with blitzes and whatnot. We just thought the best way to attack that was to throw screens and get the ball to our playmakers on the edge,” Taylor told The New Star after the game. “We believe our athletes are better than theirs, so that’s what we went with.”
Although Taylor will fall back off the radar come next week, he repeatedly makes the case that he’s the most under-rated receivers in the nation. And he’ll have the opportunity to prove that again on Saturday against Texas Tech.
Full line: 11 receptions for 178 yards and three touchdowns. One kick return for 16 yards. One punt return for 12 yards.
3. Donnel Pumphrey (Running back, San Diego State)
Any time you break a record held by Marshall Faulk, it’s a big day. Needless to say, it was a big, big day for San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey on Saturday.
With a first down run mid-way through the fourth quarter, Pumphrey, who tallied 281 yards on the ground against Cal, eclipsed Faulk’s all-time Aztec rushing record of 4,589 yards.
There"s the record breaker!
Donnel Pumphrey passes Marshall Faulk to become the @GoAztecs all-time leading rusher. https://t.co/nh08nmONfk
— CBS Sports Network (@CBSSportsNet) September 11, 2016
Despite his big day, which included over 300 total yards and three scores, Pumphrey credited the rest of San Diego State offense for the team’s 45-40 victory over Cal.
“I’m not really worried about the individual accolades,” Pumphrey told The Daily Aztec, “because it’s my whole offense that’s picking me up.”
Pumphrey will now likely enter the Heisman discussion, and rightfully so. He’s poised to have a tremendous season.
Full line: 29 carries for 281 yards (9.3 ypc) and three touchdowns. Four receptions for 29 yards.
2. Drew Lock (Quarterback, Missouri)
Potential, potential, potential.
Those are the words often repeated when it comes to Missouri quarterback Drew Lock, and ones he finally lived up to on Saturday.
In a 61-21 route of Eastern Michigan, Lock etched his name into the record books with a 450-yard, five-touchdown performance.
With his five touchdown tosses, Lock joins only Chase Daniel and Maty Mauk as Missouri quarterbacks who have thrown for five scores in a single game. And his 450 yards in a single game rank behind only Jeff Handy (480) and Blaine Gabbert (468) in school history.
“You look at his ability and his skill set … he has the skill set to be a really great player,” Missouri head coach Barry Odom told the Kansas City Star after the game. “I think Drew’s going to continue to get better. He’s still got a lot of room to grow, but it was exciting offensively to see those guys have success.”
Making Lock’s performance even more impressive is the fact that all five of his touchdown passes went to players who had never before caught a collegiate touchdown.
Lock still needs to find much more consistency moving forward, but the sophomore is well on his way.
Full line: 24-of-37 for 450 yards and five touchdowns. Two carries for one yard.
1. Lamar Jackson (Quarterback, Louisville)
Just how impressive was Lamar Jackson this week? To put it in perspective, his place on this list had already been written by the time Louisville finished their 62-28 route of Syracuse on Friday night. The only question left was where in the top two or three he would land.
When all was said and done, his performance under the lights of Friday night would not be matched. In fact, no one would even come close.
With his 411 yards passing and 199 yards rushing, Jackson became the only player in college football history to pass for 400-plus yards and rush for 175-plus yards in the same game. And his 610 total yards set a single-game record for Louisville.
Amazingly, the yardage numbers only tell a portion of the story. Jackson also passed for one touchdown, while rushing for another four. In total, Jackson now has 15 rushing touchdowns, which also sets another all-time Louisville record for quarterbacks.
There is no over-stating how impressive Jackson was. He was the single most dominant player on the field in any game this week, and his name will now begin to come up during Heisman discussions.
Jackson will face his biggest test to date next week when Louisville takes on Florida State.
Full line: 20-of-39 for 411 yards, one touchdown and one interception. 21 carries for 199 yards (9.5 ypc) and four touchdowns.

How to watch 2016 college football, Week 2: TV schedule, streaming, and the "best" games
http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Battle-at-Bristol-3.0.0.jpg?fit=640%2C426
Good morning! This is the Read Option, your daily college football newsletter. Sign up for this in your inbox! Below, you"ll find TV/streaming info for every FBS game of this weekend, in a chart showing you what to watch when.
College football"s opening weekend was great, wasn"t it? Five or seven days, depending on your calculations, with a handful of games we"ll all remember all the way through the end of the season. Four matchups between ranked teams, the highest Week 1 total in more than a decade! What could possibly go wrong?
Week 2 is what could go wrong. All the bad games were shoved into this weekend in order to make the opening to-do a real spectacle. The NFL also starts up this weekend, meaning college football retreats into a corner for a few days.
There are good games, interesting games, and games that will go so sideways they"ll be watchable. There just aren"t very many of them. That"s OK, though, because if you follow the plan below, you"ll enjoy the whole thing just fine. And as always, something completely bonkers will happen.
In each time slot, I"ve forced myself to pick at least one WATCH THIS game. Otherwise, games are sorted based on a subjective assessment of stakes, competitiveness, and entertainment value ... and this week, everything"s graded on a curve.
Thursday
Mercifully, Week 2 will give you time to prepare yourself. There are no FBS games and no games on national TV, and the NFL is starting anyway.

This Sad Florida State Fan May End Up Being The Best Meme Of The College Football Season
http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/screen-shot-2016-09-05-at-10-31-53-pm.jpg?fit=640%2C354

The first half of Florida State’s game against Ole Miss could have gone much better for the Seminoles. The Rebels took a 28-13 lead into the locker room, but it seemed like their lead was much bigger than that. Florida State’s starting quarterback, Deondre Francois, looked like a dude who was starting for the first time, star running back Dalvin Cook couldn’t get going, and Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly carved up the FSU secondary (which, in fairness, managed to produce a turnover).
For FSU fans, it was probably rough, as a Florida State team that was expected to contend for a national title looked really flat. Sure, it was the first half of the first game of the year against a really good opponent, but for a team with national championship aspirations, you probably expect more.
One ‘Noles fan took this especially hard. We know nothing about him other than he has a spectacular mustache and a look on his face that makes all of us think “The Sound Of Silence” is going through his head at all times. Immediately after he showed up on the screen, the internet started making jokes. And my goodness were some of these jokes wonderful.

While this dude may not be on the level of the screaming Stanford fan from the 2016 Rose Bowl, he is still wonderful. And hey, cheer up buddy. It’s a long season, so even if the ‘Noles lose on Monday night (which is no foregone conclusion, as Florida State charged back to take a 29-28 lead in the third quarter to make this a close ballgame), that doesn’t mean the season is over just yet.

Teddy Bridgewater Replacement: 10 Best QB Options For Vikings To Consider
http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/michael-vick2.jpg?fit=400%2C225The Minnesota Vikings are scrambling.
Teddy Bridgewater’s 2016 season ended before it ever began Tuesday, as the 23-year-old quarterback suffered a dislocated knee and a torn ACL during a non-contact drill at practice. The Vikings now must decide whether to roll with veteran backup Shaun Hill or consider other options to run their offense.
Hill is 36 years old and has been used sparingly in recent seasons. He was with Minnesota last season, so there is some familiarity, but the Vikings might be better off looking outside the organization for Bridgewater’s replacement if they want to keep pace in the NFC North.
The problem is the lack of appealing options. Sure, there are some viable QBs available, either via trade or free agency, but Bridgewater seemed capable of taking a step forward in his third year at the helm.

ESPN"s calling this the best Week 1 CFB schedule ever. Well, it"s close enough for now!
http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/pjimage__15_.0.0.jpg?fit=640%2C426
Good morning! This is the Read Option, your daily college football newsletter. Sign up for this in your inbox!
College football fans have had 2016’s opening weekend schedule circled for about a year and a half now. As non-conference games like Alabama-USC joined games like LSU-Wisconsin, and with Houston-Oklahoma gaining Playoff ramifications thanks to the Cougars’ rise, it became clear that something special was happening.
As of a few days ago, ESPN’s now repeatedly billing it as the greatest college football opening weekend ever.
It’s a very good weekend. It has four games between AP Top 25-ranked teams (LSU-Wisconsin, Georgia-North Carolina, Bama-USC, FSU-Ole Miss) and at least half a dozen other games that anybody anywhere should be interested in.
But best ever? Nah.
CBS Sports found four seasons since just 1985 with at least as many ranked-vs.-ranked games in Week 1. 1998 had double as many. And while spreading all this across five nights sounds nice and means Notre Dame-Texas and FSU-Ole Miss don’t get thrown on during other big games, the best game before Saturday is ... uh ... Kansas State-Stanford?
What is special here: we’re getting back to the way the sport should work. Good teams should play good teams from other parts of the country before bowl season.
What’s changed?
For one thing, in 2006, the NCAA started allowing each team to play a 12-game schedule every year. Most teams added cupcake opponents. Colleges like easy wins and home-game profits, and every team now has room for plenty of those per year.
One of the College Football Playoff’s stated goals is to encourage teams to play tougher schedules. Athletic directors talk about the perceived pressure to arrange quality matchups (because fans can’t yell at you if your coach can’t handle the elite schedule you gave him, at least for a while), the Big Ten and SEC have mandated their teams to play at least one Power 5 non-conference opponent per season, and neutral-sites have emerged as a way to make better games happen. So sure, the Playoff’s helped.
Probably more important, though: ESPN’s investment in college football. Kurt Dargis, ESPN’s director of programming and acquisitions, in an interview with Saturday Blitz:
It’s kind of a three-party process between the schools, the organizers and us. It takes about that long to get these done. There are some big headliner games beyond this season which we’ve already begun working on. Next year we have Michigan and Florida in Arlington. Alabama is playing Florid State in Atlanta on Saturday and Tennessee is playing Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Monday night. BYU is playing LSU in Houston…so, we’re working on those games in the outer years and our goal is always to have those things done two, three or four years ahead of time.
He’s talking specifically about kickoff times and which networks to put these games on, but there’s no question that ESPN’s influence throughout the sport has helped push schools toward games worthy of opening-weekend spotlights. And when ESPN helps make a good weekend, as ESPN"s done here, ESPN will let you know about it. That"s fine!
(Those "12th games" are arriving in Week 2 this year, by the way, with likely no games between AP-ranked teams. Week 3 looks great, though!)

South Carolina got its highest-rated commit in years, and Bud explains why it’s an even bigger deal than it sounds.
Let’s talk through the 2016 season #narratives we’re already sick of! The comments are mostly people arguing about whether the SEC’s overrated or not, so I think the king of all arguments is still the king.
It’s not easy to see how Auburn beats Clemson, other than Jordan-Hare madness or whatever.
Urban Meyer doesn’t agree with a player’s year-long suspension, meaning it was a school rule of some sort.
If Tyrone Swoopes were to have some big moments as Texas’ starting QB this year, that would be pretty neat.
Hell yeah. Noel Devine, producer of some of the greatest highlight videos ever, is returning to WVU to finish his degree.

Brett Favre speech longest but best at Hall of Fame
http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/brett-favre-speech.jpg?fit=600%2C338
Brett Favre gave the longest speech of the night during Hall of Fame inductions on Saturday in Canton, but it was worth it.
Favre was presented by his wife Deanna and then took over and spoke for around 36 minutes. For the bulk of his speech, he talked about his family and gave his thanks to them.

The truly tear-jerking part of his speech when Favre talked about his late father, Irv. Irving was Brett’s inspiration growing up. He coached Brett throughout his youth career and even was his high school coach. You know what made his Hall of Fame speech so special? Brett shared a story that he said he never previously shared with anyone, including Deanna. This was a good one.
