WATCH: Allen Iverson Goes for 60 Against Dwight Howard and the Magic

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/watch-allen-iverson-goes-for-60.jpg?fit=640%2C360

Allen Iverson’s been on our minds even more than usual lately. He finally made it to basketball immortality, where he delivered one of the greatest Hall of Fame speeches we’ve ever seen.

It’s been a minute since we’ve actually seen Bubba Chuck lace up his Reeboks and during a rare down-day in the NBA offseason, we can’t think of a better time to remind ourselves just how incredible he was.

In the video above, AI was nine years into his career, with thousands of minutes on his legs and injuries we’ve probably never heard of. He completely picks apart the Orlando Magic for 60 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Rookie Dwight Howard probably had no idea what was going on.

Free Agent Stock Watch: Brandon Moss

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Moss.Brandon-3-234x300.jpg?fit=234%2C300

Entering the 2016 season, some questioned whether the Cardinals should tender slugger Brandon Moss a contract. Despite having given up a solid pitching prospect (Rob Kaminsky) to acquire him at the trade deadline, St. Louis received only average offensive production from Moss down the stretch in 2015. And he was set for a big salary in his final season of arb eligibility.

The Cards continued to show faith in Moss, though, ultimately tendering him and agreeing on a $ 8.25MM payday. And perhaps it was never a close call. After all, the team was willing to part with Kaminsky in that deal even though Moss had put up a meager .217/.288/.407 batting line with the Indians over the first half of 2015.

As Moss puts the finishing touches on a strong 2016 season, St. Louis faces another question on him, but it’s at quite a different price point. Now, it’s an open question whether the team will make him a $ 16.7MM qualifying offer. If it does, Moss will at least need to consider accepting, given that he’ll be entering his age-33 season and would otherwise stand to enter the market with draft compensation attached.

Regardless, the fact that the QO could even potentially come into play is testament to Moss’s quality efforts. Over his 384 plate appearances in 2016, he owns a .247/.323/.532 batting line with 25 long balls. While he did miss a bit of action with an ankle injury, that isn’t likely to be a long-term issue, and he has kept hitting since his return.

So, what explains the lull? Is this season an outlier or was last? Ever since his 2012 breakout, Moss has walked in between 8.7% and 11.6% of his plate appearances while striking out between 25% and 30% of the time. His isolated power dipped in 2014 and fell further in 2015, moving in sync with his homer-per-flyball rate. But Moss posted a hard-hit ball rate in the 40% range last season. And now that the HR/FB has moved back to a lofty 21.7%, he is again doing damage.

There’s certainly some risk in this sort of profile. Interestingly, Moss’s best overall offensive campaigns have come when his swinging-strike rate was at its highest. For a player who already has a ton of whiffs in his game, and doesn’t add value through his legs or his glove, teams will rightly question what kind of investment to make.

Platoon splits, too, raise some questions. As you might have guessed, Moss has feasted on righties this year but has been merely average when facing same-handed pitching. That represents a return to the somewhat freer-swinging version of Moss from 2012-13, when he was most productive overall. In the intervening two seasons, Moss actually carried reverse platoon splits, showing less power but better on-base ability against southpaws. All said, it’s an interesting and varied profile, but clubs will likely expect to spell Moss at least occasionally when lefties take the mound.

One other notable aspect of Moss’s likely upcoming free agent case is his glovework. I noted already that he doesn’t really add value on defense, but he has actually received slightly positive lifetime UZR and DRS ratings in the corner outfield. Those metrics don’t love him at first base, but perhaps the glove will help keep his market more open than one might expect. While Moss isn’t any kind of stolen base threat, moreover, he has traditionally rated as a roughly league-average overall performer on the basepaths.

In the aggregate, even in his best years, Moss has been more of a 2 to 2.5 WAR player. Clearly, there are some limits to his game that may not make him a simple plug-and-play everyday regular. But with the right roster around him, Moss could be a highly valuable piece, bringing strong big-time left-handed pop and more competency in the field and on the bases than one might have expected.

Finding comps for a contract is a tricky business for a player like Moss. The qualifying offer question could loom large, as some teams may simply not be interested in punting a pick to sign him. And it’s not easy to assess whether most organizations will view Moss more as an oft-used platoon player or a plausible everyday presence in the lineup.

From where I sit, though, Moss isn’t particularly likely to get a QO. That ought to help maintain a reasonable spread of demand for the veteran, which could significantly impact how his market develops. A two-year arrangement could make some sense, and Moss might reasonably hope to land on the higher side of a set of price points that range from $ 12MM (Chris Young) all the way up to $ 32MM (Mike Napoli). Three years have been there for near-regular, non-QO outfielders like Gerardo Parra ($ 27.5MM) and Denard Span ($ 31MM), with Nick Markakis representing of a next tier with his deal (four years, $ 44MM). Pop typically pays more than other skills, but it seems a bit of a stretch to imagine Moss reaching the levels of Nelson Cruz (four years, $ 58MM), even though the Mariners slugger was slightly older and came with draft compensation.

Odds are that Moss will be looking more at two or three year offers than viable four-year scenarios. That may not represent a banner entry onto the free agent market for a player who has popped 24 bombs per year for the last five seasons, but Moss was a late-emergent talent and is already looking to sell seasons in his mid-thirties. Still, he has obviously pushed his earning power back northward with a quality campaign that makes his 2015 dud look like a bit of an outlier.

How to watch 2016 college football, Week 2: TV schedule, streaming, and the "best" games

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Battle-at-Bristol-3.0.0.jpg?fit=640%2C426

Good morning! This is the Read Option, your daily college football newsletter. Sign up for this in your inbox! Below, you"ll find TV/streaming info for every FBS game of this weekend, in a chart showing you what to watch when.

College football"s opening weekend was great, wasn"t it? Five or seven days, depending on your calculations, with a handful of games we"ll all remember all the way through the end of the season. Four matchups between ranked teams, the highest Week 1 total in more than a decade! What could possibly go wrong?

Week 2 is what could go wrong. All the bad games were shoved into this weekend in order to make the opening to-do a real spectacle.  The NFL also starts up this weekend, meaning college football retreats into a corner for a few days.

There are good games, interesting games, and games that will go so sideways they"ll be watchable. There just aren"t very many of them. That"s OK, though, because if you follow the plan below, you"ll enjoy the whole thing just fine. And as always, something completely bonkers will happen.

In each time slot, I"ve forced myself to pick at least one WATCH THIS game. Otherwise, games are sorted based on a subjective assessment of stakes, competitiveness, and entertainment value ... and this week, everything"s graded on a curve.

Thursday

Mercifully, Week 2 will give you time to prepare yourself. There are no FBS games and no games on national TV, and the NFL is starting anyway.

Friday

UofL vs. Cuse should be pretty fun. Lamar Jackson vs. a Dino Babers offense, with the stronger team having to go on the road? That might be one of the best Friday games of the year, and might be the best chance all week for a ranked team to lose. Or the Orange might get rocked.

Elsewhere, Maryland"s on Extremely Weird Road Game Upset Alert.

Saturday

WATCH THISMaybe watch thisThis is a football game
8 p.m. ET#13 Louisville at Syracuse
ESPN2, WatchESPN
Maryland at FIU
CBSSN

Lemme explain the MUST-WATCH picks:
  • Penn State and Pitt are decent Power 5 teams that hate each other and don"t get to play all that often these days. That"s the only storyline of national interest in the entire early block.

  • Western Kentucky-Alabama gets top billing over similar-sounding games in a desperate middle shift -- I have to pick something -- because Conference USA favorite WKU can ball, especially on offense. The Hilltoppers will have a better final margin against Alabama than USC did, and you tuned in for that game without complaining.

  • Business picks up, relatively, later. Arkansas-TCU is one of the season"s best non-conference games, tempered quite a bit by both teams struggling against weak competition in Week 1. According to Vegas, this is the best ranked game of the week, as the Frogs are only favored by six points.

  • Georgia Southern-South Alabama could be one of the Sun Belt"s biggest and best games of the year, considering USA beat Mississippi State last week. Or maybe MSU is just very bad.

  • Here"s why you should watch ¡El Assico!, and it"s the same article as last year and next year.

  • Here"s why you should watch BYU-Utah. This is an actual story that does not insult an entire state.

  • Here"s why you should watch Tennessee-Virginia Tech:

Enjoy the many good moments sure to arise, and then we get a much, much better Week 3. We can do this.

WATCH: Shane Buechele Throws Epic First Touchdown Pass for Texas

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/screenshot_2016-09-04_at_5-11-e1473031923624.jpg?fit=200%2C112
College football fans found out right before the game that true freshman Shane Buechele would get the start for Texas against Notre Dame. Just a few minutes later he threw this amazing back shoulder touchdown pass to Armanti Foreman.

It was a 19-yard touchdown pass as Foreman dragged his toe to get in bounds. It was the first touchdown pass of Buechele’s career.

Buechele got an early start to his college football career by enrolling early in January 2016. The buzz in Austin began to build after his standout performance in the spring game.

Texas coach Charlie Strong had been quiet on who would be the starting quarterback and announced his decision live on ABC just before kickoff. Buechele was competing with Tyrone Swoopes for the starting spot.

Rangers manager forcing coach to leave team to watch son play QB for Texas

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/shane-buechele-pass.jpg?fit=500%2C303

Shane Buechele pass

One of the Texas Rangers’ coaches is being forced to take a leave … but it’s actually for a good reason.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister is insisting his bench coach Steve Buechele leave the team on Sunday to go watch his son, Shane, make his college debut as a true freshman quarterback for Texas.

“If he’s still here, I might walk out and tell the umpires to throw him out,” Banister said of Buechele, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Gerry Fraley.

Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong has not publicly named a starting quarterback, but all signs — including Banister’s decree — point to Shane Buechele starting Sunday night against Notre Dame.

Shane Buechele threw for 73 touchdowns and rushed for 21 scores during his high school career at Lamar High in Arlington. He played brilliantly in the spring game in April, which put him on track to claim the starting job for the Longhorns.

D’Angelo Russell: ‘Luke Walton Is Not a Head Coach That Will Sit Back And Watch Other Coaches Train Players’

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/dangelo_russell.jpg?fit=640%2C360

It’s no secret that D’Angelo Russell and Byron Scott were at odds last season. But now that Luke Walton is at the helm, Russell has already noticed a change in how the team is run.

Yesterday, the Lakers unveiled the name of the organization’s new training facility and Russell had high-praise for his new coach.

Via Lakers Nation:

“He’s one of the best people I know, as far as off the court,” Russell said of his new head coach on Wednesday. “c I feel like I can call him anytime. He’s not like a head coach that will sit back and just watch his other coaches and colleagues just train other players, he’s always involved. He’ll get out there and play with you if he wants. It’s just great to have a young coach like him in the building.”

Russell was impressive during the Las Vegas Summer League and the Lakers’ fan base is expecting big things from the former No. 2 overall pick.

WATCH: Daniel Bryan Explains The Miz Argument on ‘Talking Smack’

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/daniel_bryan_bio-e1472221600191.jpg?fit=200%2C112

On Talking Smack tonight, SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan apologized for his behavior during last week’s episode.

A Talking Smack fight between The Miz and Daniel Bryan blew up last week, and it became a major part of the SmackDown storyline on August 30th, with the clip being played in full at the start of the show and with Shane McMahon scolding Bryan for his unprofessional behavior. Bryan had accused The Miz of being a coward, which really set him off and lead to a passionate rant.

At the top of August 30th’s Talking Smack, then, Daniel Bryan offered a bit of an apology, particularly to Renee Young for storming off the show eight minutes before it was set to end. Bryan said that when he got up, it wasn’t because he wanted to punch The Miz; it’s that he was saddened by what The Miz said because it was right. Bryan made it clear that in reality, he is genuinely sad that he can never wrestle again due to his injuries.

Finally, Bryan went on to say that the WWE management decided to keep Bryan and The Miz separate after their confrontation, which explains why they did not interact at all during SmackDown this week. Strangely, the WWE promoted on social media that Daniel Bryan would be addressing the Miz feud on SmackDown, which did not end up occurring.

In the immediate aftermath of The Miz’s rant last week, it was somewhat unclear whether this was a work or a shoot. But it has become increasingly obvious that this is all a part of a SmackDown storyline, even if the wording of The Miz’s rant itself may have been improvised. Although it’s unlikely that Daniel Bryan could ever return to the ring, we will reportedly be seeing slight hints at this in the future, as various superstars taunt Bryan for not being able to compete.

WWE Rumors & Spoilers: Could Daniel Bryan Return to the Ring?

Daniel Bryan retired from wrestling earlier this year, but there is now speculation that he could make an in-ring return.
