If you weren"t at the men"s beach volleyball gold medal match in Rio on Thursday, then you missed out on the biggest party in the world. While the main event was on the sand between Brazil and Italy, the Brazilian crowd cheering on the home team was beyond incredible.

The fans came out in full force for the match and not even rain could damper their enthusiasm. The result was one of the best sports environments we"ll see all year.

Here are some of the best photos from an unforgettable night for the Brazil crowd.

This fan has to be the fan of the night:

A Mexican Boxer Was Begging On Buses Before Winning An Olympic Medal

Every athlete who comes to the Rio Olympics has a story. Some are of precocious brilliance, some are of last chance glory, still others are of long roads back from injury. But the ones that most consistently pull at the heartstrings are the stories of athletes who had to overcome huge obstacles just to make it to the Games — the athletes who achieve victory the moment they march out in the parade during the opening ceremonies. Boxer Misael Rodriguez is one of those athletes with one of those stories.

The Mexican athletic federation is woefully underfunded, and run by a former state prosecutor, Alfredo Castillo, rather than anyone with an athletic background. The country’s Olympic delegation has underwhelmed at these Games, and Rodriguez took bronze in the middleweight division on Thursday for the country’s first medal. That’s quite an accomplishment, especially considering that due to the program’s poor funding, Rodriguez and his fellow Mexican boxers had to literally beg for the money to travel to qualifying tournaments.

After the former Mexican Boxing Federation chair (who apparently lost a power struggle with Castillo) said publicly (and roughly translated), “I hope Conade [Mexico’s Olympic federation] doesn’t take credit for this medal, because it was his very personal effort,” Castillo responded by denying the lack of support to the BBC (translated):
We will report punctually one by one, to whom we had confronted, whatever support we had, what competitions we went to, our methodology of work, what we looked for in the trips taken. Much time was invested into each one of them. We spent countless time invested with medics and physiotherapists over one evaluation.

We’re inclined to side with the athlete over a bureaucrat with dubious qualifications, but Mexico’s paltry medal count shames Castillo far more than Rodriguez could.

Lochte’s Olympic Swim Teammates to Meet With Brazilian Authorities on Reported Robbery

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/swimmers-620x389.jpg?fit=620%2C389
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Three American Olympic swimmers planned to meet with Brazilian law enforcement Thursday to discuss a reported robbery targeting 12-time medalist Ryan Lochte and his teammates, a U.S. Olympic Committee official said.

USOC spokesperson Patrick Sandusky said Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were released by local authorities after being pulled from a flight at the Rio de Janeiro airport, with the understanding that discussions would continue amid uncertainty over what truly took place during a late outing the night Olympic swimming wrapped up at the Rio Games.

American Olympic swimmers Gunnar Bentz, left, and Jack Conger, center, leave the police station at Rio International airport early Thursday Aug. 18, 2016. The two were taken off their flight from Brazil to the U.S. on Wednesday by local authorities amid an investigation into a reported robbery targeting Ryan Lochte and his teammates. According to their lawyer they will not be allowed to leave Brazil until they provide testimony about the robbery. (AP Photo/Mauro Pimentel)

Fellow teammate Jimmy Feigen also plans to talk to officials, Sandusky said, as he navigates a judge’s order that keeps him in Brazil. The order similarly called for Lochte’s passport to be seized, but the star swimmer had already returned to the United States to the United States before authorities could enforce the decision.

A lawyer for Conger and Bentz said Thursday that they won’t be allowed to leave Brazil until they provide testimony to investigators. The swimmers didn’t speak to reporters as they left the airport, shuttled away by a black car waiting outside. They departed for an unspecified location in Brazil and had yet to testify, said attorney Sergio Riera.

Representatives from the U.S. consulate arrived at the airport shortly after the swimmers were stopped from leaving the country.

The action comes amid increasing tension between Brazilian authorities and the American swimmers over the ever-changing account of the robbery. Police say they have found little evidence so far to support the claims, and that the swimmers were unable to provide key details in interviews. The office of Judge Keyla Blanc, who ordered the passports seized, said that there were discrepancies in the statements by the swimmers.

Lochte has said he was with Conger, Bentz and Jimmy Feigen when they were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi by men with a police badge as they returned to the athletes village from a party, several hours after the final Olympic swimming events.

NBC reported Wednesday night that Lochte backed off some of his earlier claims about the robbery. He now says the taxi wasn’t pulled over by men with a badge, but that they were robbed after stopping at a gas station, NBC reported. Lochte also said the assailant pointed a gun at him rather than putting it to his head.

(AP Photo/Martin Meissner, File)

The U.S. Olympic Committee said police went to the athletes village to try to collect the passports, but the swim team had already moved out.

Lochte’s father told The Associated Press by phone from his Florida home that his son called him Tuesday after arriving in the United States. The 32-year-old swimmer was going to pick up his car and buy a new wallet to replace the one that he said was stolen.

“I’m just happy he’s safe,” Steve Lochte said. “It was an unfortunate experience for him and the other three. I don’t know what all the controversy is. They were basically taken out of the taxi and robbed. The main thing is he’s very lucky that he’s safe and that all they got was his cash and wallet.”

While he’s medaled often in the Olympic pool, Lochte’s accomplishments have long been overshadowed by teammate Michael Phelps — the most decorated Olympian in history. He won a gold in Rio in a relay race alongside Phelps.

The group did not call police, authorities said, and officers began investigating once they saw media reports in which Lochte’s mother spoke about the robbery.

A police official with knowledge of the investigation told the AP that police cannot find their taxi driver or witnesses from the robbery. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Police interviewed Lochte and one other swimmer, who said they had been intoxicated and could not remember what type and color of taxi they rode in or where the robbery happened, the police official said. The swimmers also could not say what time the events occurred.

Lochte’s attorney, Jeff Ostrow, has said there is no question the robbery occurred.

“Why would anybody fabricate anything?” Steve Lochte said. “It’s just ridiculous.”

Lochte told USA Today that he and his teammates didn’t initially tell the U.S. Olympic officials about the robbery because “we were afraid we’d get in trouble.”

Steve Bentz, father of Gunnar Bentz, when reached by phone late Wednesday night, said: “I really don’t want to say anything,” and hung up.

USA women’s Olympic winning streak halted by Colombia

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/c816c92072a63ef40a72543dbde6718c697c2205.jpg?fit=640%2C427

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) – The USA women’s football team’s Olympic winning streak was ended by Catalina Usme’s stoppage time equaliser and an uncharacteristic howler from controversial goalkeeper Hope Solo in a 2-2 draw with Colombia.

Meanwhile, two-time world champions Germany, Australia and France all booked their place in Friday’s quarter-finals.

Solo has been taunted by chants of “Zika” in Brazil for extravagant social media posts showing her draping a mosquito net over her head to avoid the virus at the Games.

And a big crowd in Manaus that had gathered at the Arena da Amazonia ahead of Brazil’s clash with South Africa later on Tuesday revelled in Solo’s pain when she let Usme’s free-kick slip between her legs to hand Colombia a shock 26th minute lead.

US coach Jill Ellis had left stars Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath on the bench with progression to the last eight already assured, but captain Carli Lloyd did start and made another telling contribution for the equaliser after scoring in the first two games against France and New Zealand.

Lloyd’s driven effort was brilliantly turned onto the bar by Sandra Sepulveda, but Crystal Dunn followed up to tap home the rebound.

Mallory Pugh drilled the USA in front, but their winning streak stretching back to a group stage defeat to Norway in Beijing eight years ago was ended when Usme grabbed her second of the game in stoppage time.

Despite the point Colombia bow out at the group stage.

Two-time world champions Germany sneaked into the quarter-finals despite Melissa Tancredi’s double maintaining Canada’s perfect record in Brazil with a 2-1 win in Brasilia.

Canada topped Group E as Tancredi cancelled out Melanie Behringer’s early penalty before striking the winner on the hour mark for the 2012 bronze medallists.

Germany edged out Australia for second place by just one goal on goal difference after the Matildas smashed Zimbabwe 6-1. However, the Africans’ spirits weren’t crushed on their first ever tournament appearance as they jubilantly celebrated Emmaculate Msipa’s injury-time consolation.

Australia progress to the last eight as one of the two best third-placed sides.

France lie in wait for Canada in Sao Paulo as Eugenie Le Sommer and a brace from Louisa Cadamuro handed them a 3-0 win over New Zealand to take second spot behind the USA in Group G.

Brazil, who have put their struggling male counterparts to shame with thrilling wins over China and Sweden, hope to continue their momentum with five-time World Player of the Year Marta to the fore against South Africa.

In the other game in Group E, China face Sweden in Brasilia with a draw enough to see both sides take the final two quarter-final places.

DeMarcus Cousins has perfect response to odd question from Olympic reporter

Believe it or not, The Boogie Man has a highly refined sense of humor too.

Kings center DeMarcus Cousins, who is competing for USA Basketball at the Rio Games this summer, was asked a strange question by an Olympic reporter on Thursday and delivered the perfect retort in response, per Andrew Keh of the New York Times.

Who would’ve thought that the All-Star big man could be so meta? Of course, Cousins has a rich history of priceless encounters with the international media, so this is really nothing all that new. Credit to him for putting forth a witty, philosophical answer to a bizarre question when in his mind he was probably thinking to himself, “Lord give me the strength.”

Pele’s health threatens to douse Olympic flame hopes

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/a1fdde75235778fbf0fdcec1252faa39be1e1eda.jpg?fit=640%2C427

Sao Paulo (AFP) – Brazil football legend Pele wants to light the Rio Olympic flame at the opening ceremony on Friday, but poor health may prevent him from accepting the honor, his spokesman said Thursday.

Doubts over whether Pele, 75, would be free to carry the torch to the cauldron in the Maracana stadium have been cleared up, spokesman, Jose Fornos Rodrigues, told AFP. The new question mark is over his health.

“Getting free is not a problem now, but he has muscle pain which is affecting his mobility. He has gone to the doctor to see how things are,” the spokesman, also known as Pepito, said.

“We still don’t know whether he can take part in the lighting of the cauldron,” Pepito said, “but he’s trying.”

On Wednesday, Pele told Globo television he had been invited to light the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach.

However, he said he had concerns over existing arrangements.

Pele — real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento — is widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time.

The striker won three World Cups with Brazil but never competed at the Olympics.

He has undergone several hip operations and walks with a cane.

Four countries that can compete with USA Basketball for Olympic gold

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/four-countries-that-can-compete.jpg?fit=480%2C480

pau-gasol-spain

Team USA rules over the international basketball landscape with an iron fist. A starting lineup of Stephen Curry, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis with Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, and Blake Griffin coming off the bench would probably be a shoo-in for the gold medal, not just in basketball, but in handball, judo, synchronized swimming, and the triathlon as well. Instead, those are all players who WON’T be suiting up for the good ol’ US of A at the Olympics this year. But the bad news for the rest of the world is that America’s 12-man junior varsity roster still boasts a combined 33 All-Star appearances, 24 All-NBA honors, 10 All-Defensive Team selections, five scoring titles, and Harrison Barnes. USA Basketball has blasted opponents by an average margin of victory of 43 points in five exhibition contests, and, realistically speaking, nobody, not Papua New Guinea, not Mordor, not Vanessa Carlton, has a Drummond’s chance at the free throw line of stealing the gold away from them.

But is anything really that guaranteed, especially in a world where the foul stench of bronze in the 2004 Athen Games still reeks about as badly as the Zika-infested Brazilian countryside and where the ineradicable mental images of Draymond’s donkey may have traumatized the entire team into a permanent state of mediocrity? For the sake of competitive spirit (something that one lanky small forward for Team USA could use a lesson in), here are the four countries best suited to compete with America for basketball gold in Rio.

Lithuania

Perhaps the lone Achilles’ heel for USA Basketball is the relative lack of experience at the Olympic level. Kevin Durant and grumpy grandpa Carmelo Anthony are the only two players on the roster with any prior Olympic experience whatsoever. That’s not going to be a problem for the Baltic nation of Lithuania, a team returning six members from their 2012 squad that competed at the London Games. They’re also coming off a strong recent performance on the international stage, making it all the way to the championship game against Spain in EuroBasket 2015. The team is led by Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas, a smooth post-up/pick-and-roll player who is battle-tested against the NBA’s top talent and who may be the team’s most effective weapon against DeMarcus Cousins considering his knack for baiting Boogie into near-ejections.

Valanciunas is complemented by Thunder rookie Domantas Sabonis (who has some size 22 shoes to fill given the plunderings of father Arvydas, who famously led the USSR to gold at the 1988 Seoul Games, in Olympic play) and a strong scoring forward in Real Madrid’s Jonas Mačiulis. All in all, Lithuania is full of high-IQ athletes who work well in the halfcourt, move the ball effectively, shoot at a solid clip from distance, and make the right cuts, which should make them a handful to deal with in Rio.

Australia

If Andrew Bogut ever manages to take a proper shower over the course of the Rio Games, watch out. Bogut, the blue-collar bruiser, is one of six NBA players on the Australia roster along with Patty Mills, Joe Ingles, Cameron Bairstow, Aron Baynes, and lower body enthusiast Matthew Dellavedova. The Aussies will play slow and be physical, hoping to limit your number of possessions and wear you down over the course of 40 minutes. In the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, their last major international competition, Australia averaged just 78.0 points per game (compared to 104.6 points per game by Team USA in the same tournament) but held opponents to a stingy 73.0 points per game. But even if Australia generally likes to slow down the pace of play, they are still excellent at forcing live-ball turnovers and converting them into easy transition opportunities.

The playmaking of Ingles and the caffeinated dribble drives of Mills also make this team a ton of fun to watch in tight spaces.

With their two best young players, Dante Exum and Ben Simmons, not even making the trip to Brazil this year, the future looks awfully bright for Australia, but the present looks pretty darn good too.

France

Where to even begin with the lovable French? The jiggly goodness of Boris Diaw? The condor wings of Rudy Gobert redirecting shot attempts towards the concession stands? The do-it-all artistry of Nicolas Batum? Or the still-spicy herky-jerky play of Tony Parker? France brandishes a squad that’s as deep and experienced as any, and they’re fresh off back-to-back top-three finishes in both the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup and 2015 EuroBasket. It’s a thing of beauty when the French launch into one of their patented sequences of swinging the basketball from side to side.

Another name to watch out for is Nuggets big man Joffrey Lauvergne, whose mobility as a rangy pick-and-pop big gives France’s offense more creativity and unpredictability and is surpassed only by his immaculately coiffed hair.

With former Spur Nando de Colo and the sweet-shooting Thomas Heurtel filling out the rest of the rotation, France has depth, size, and skill all over the court, so they’re sure as hell not just rolling over when the time comes to face off against the United States.

Spain

Who else but the fearsome Spanish Armada? The absences of Marc Gasol (still recovering from a broken foot) and Serge Ibaka (undisclosed reasons but possibly a casualty of the naturalized player rule that only allowed either him or Nikola Mirotic to be on the roster) definitely hurt. But Spain’s cause is still led by arguably the greatest player in international basketball history in Pau Gasol. The six-time All-Star is still kicking at 36 years old and is coming off a flat-out dominant performance in EuroBasket 2015 where he guided Spain to a first-place finish with a manic 25.6 points per game, 8.8 rebounds per game, and 2.3 blocks per game en route to MVP honors.

Gasol won’t be able to compete against the brute strength of DeMarcus Cousins or the jack-in-the-box athleticism of DeAndre Jordan. But what he will be able to do is serve as the fulcrum of the Spanish offense, facilitating from the high post and slicing up the opposition with midrange jumpers, back-to-the-basket buckets, and powerful rolls/drives to the rim.

Gasol may not be a No. 1 option in the NBA anymore, but he becomes a man possessed on the international stage, and this Spanish team will go as far as he takes them. Still, his supporting cast is nothing to sneeze at either. Spain has all of the talent of a squad like France but with better floor spacing and stronger all-around perimeter play. Rudy Fernandez, Juan Carlos Navarro, and consonant-to-vowel god Sergio Llull are all cold-blooded assassins from deep who can generate offense off the bounce as well. Mirotic, Gasol’s now-former teammate on the Bulls, is a full-bearded mismatch on the offensive end, and Jose Calderon always manages to become not useless in global competition. And let’s not forget about the unparalleled passing brilliance of Wolves guard Ricky Rubio, who is a better pure playmaker than anyone on Team USA.

But ultimately, this is all probably just a glorified thought exercise. With Ibaka and the younger Gasol out of commission, Spain has neither the rim protection nor the sheer scoring punch necessary to knock off The Land of Liberty. As such, it has become painfully obvious that nobody is dethroning Team USA come hell or poop water (something that, ironically, the Olympic water sport athletes might actually have to endure this year). They’re simply too talented, too athletic, too long, and too much. Unstoppable with a true center and unstoppable without one (Kyrie Irving-Klay Thompson-Kevin Durant-Paul George-Draymond Green crunchtime lineups, anyone?), we might as well just engrave a bald eagle into the gold medals already and get it over with. But still, for the love of entertaining wire-to-wire international basketball, a man can surely dream, can’t he?

China"s Olympic Men"s Basketball Team Shows Promise Against Team USA

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/2016-07-28-1469666102-4058598-basketball400906_1280-thumb.jpg?fit=570%2C381
2016-07-28-1469666102-4058598-basketball400906_1280.jpg

On Tuesday night, the Chinese Olympic Men"s Basketball Team played its second game in three nights against Team USA. The game result, as many expected, was one-sided against China.

Although both games were lopsided, 106-57 and 107-57 respectively, each was an opportunity for the young Chinese team to take away valuable lessons learned against a highly skilled opponent.

After a film session, Beijing coaches likely reiterated that they played within a team concept and worked hard. These two components were echoed by Team USA and Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski, and are certainly key if the Chinese squad is to do well at next month"s Olympics in Rio. Chinese Head Coach Gong Luming has seen talent in-action and likely stressed these warm-up games against Team USA were like any other games. After all, Gong played a part in the Chinese team"s magical run in the 1996 Olympics where the Beijing beat Angola and Argentina only to fall to then host Team USA featuring Shaquille O"Neal, Charles Barkley, and Grant Hill.

"Before the game started, we kind of knew the result," Gong told USA reporters after the first loss. "The result for us was not important. More important is the process."

While the Chinese squad cannot substitute out 1st-team NBA All-stars for fresh All-stars like Team USA, it does play within the system which has some NBA talent.

Arguably the most known Chinese basketball player outside Yao Ming, Yi Jianlian, the Milwaukee Bucks number six overall selection in the 2007 NBA draft, played in the first game, but did not participate in the second. Yi played five seasons in the NBA with four teams, before he returned to play in the Chinese Basketball Association.

NBA front offices selected two Chinese players in this year"s draft. Huston Rockets picked Zhou Qi, a 7"2" center, who averaged 15.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks with Xinjiang Tigers in the CBA. The Memphis Grizzlies drafted another center, Wang Zhelin, who averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds the over three seasons, but saw production decline due to injuries last year. One or both draftees are expected to stay in China to hone and mature their basketball skills.

Aside from these three players is former NBA prospect Chinese guard Guo Ailun. "It"s just a game," Guo told FIBA.com in July, speaking about the opening Olympic round game against Team USA. "I"m a player and will just play game by game."

While Team USA is loaded with world-class talent, the Chinese squad should not be starstruck. Many former NBA all-stars have played or are playing in the Chinese Basketball Association. Stephon Marbury, Gilbert Arenas, and Michael Beasley, are just some of the former NBA All-Star talent playing in China. Even Jordan Crawford, former Washington Wizards guard, scored 72 points in a CBA game earlier this year.

The Chinese Men"s National Basketball Team is a rising team in the basketball world. It beat France in July in an international friendly in which Yi scored 28 points. Such a victory demonstrates the competitive nature of the Chinese team which is 14th in the FIBA world rankings (as of Oct 2015), and on the rise. While Beijing has dominated the FIBA Asia Championships, winning 19 times (16 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze), competition is more competitive than ever. Iran and The Philippines have challenged China in recent years. Both these squads have had at least one current or former NBA player on their squad. Hamed Haddadi and Arslan Kazemi played for Tehran. Andray Blatche, who averaged 31 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists last season as a member of the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, became a Filipino citizen last year, making him eligible to play on his new country"s national team.

Although China plays Team USA in the opening round of the Olympics, group play should be a solid determiner where they stand in international competition. The games should also prepare Beijing to host the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, in which 31 other teams will compete.
