WATCH: Allen Iverson Goes for 60 Against Dwight Howard and the Magic

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/watch-allen-iverson-goes-for-60.jpg?fit=640%2C360

Allen Iverson’s been on our minds even more than usual lately. He finally made it to basketball immortality, where he delivered one of the greatest Hall of Fame speeches we’ve ever seen.

It’s been a minute since we’ve actually seen Bubba Chuck lace up his Reeboks and during a rare down-day in the NBA offseason, we can’t think of a better time to remind ourselves just how incredible he was.

In the video above, AI was nine years into his career, with thousands of minutes on his legs and injuries we’ve probably never heard of. He completely picks apart the Orlando Magic for 60 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Rookie Dwight Howard probably had no idea what was going on.

Kane backs Tottenham in Champions League opener against Monaco

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/c21342e5d8cf359af947d27f15eef5fd0e4690a0.jpg?fit=640%2C427

London (AFP) – Harry Kane is confident Tottenham’s England stars will ensure Wembley becomes a successful second home in their Champions League opener against Monaco on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side return to the Champions League for the first time in five years in unfamiliar surroundings after deciding to stage their European matches at Wembley rather than White Hart Lane.

The prospect of bigger crowds at the English national stadium convinced Tottenham to make the short move across north London and the crowd is expected to set a new record for the largest attendance for a home Champions League game in Britain.

Fans of Tottenham’s bitter rivals Arsenal can testify to the struggles of a Wembley relocation as they won just two of their six fixtures in Europe when temporarily playing there in the late 1990s.

But Tottenham striker Kane believes a strong English core that includes internationals Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and himself, can help them instantly settle in the venue where they play for their country.

“If there are 85-90,000 Tottenham fans in there it’s only going to make you play better,” Kane said.

“A lot of us have played there already, so it feels like even more of a home. Everyone knows how iconic Wembley is, but that’s what we’ve got to be careful of.

“Monaco are going to come here and it’s a big occasion for them as well. We have to make sure we’re ready for that.”

Tottenham head into the Monaco clash on a high after winning 4-0 at Stoke in the Premier League on Saturday.

– Amazing atmosphere –

Kane ended a nine-game goal drought by netting for the first time this season and he believes the result was emblematic of the positive mood at Tottenham.

“The lads are excited and we wanted a good result here,” he said.

“Now we can go there on Wednesday and enjoy the record-breaking crowd. It’s going to be an amazing atmosphere and the lads cannot wait to play in that one now.

“There’s a buzz about that one and coming off the back of a 4-0 win you can’t ask for much more. We have to prepare well for Wednesday now.

“We’re not there just to participate. We want to go as far as we can, we feel we have a group that we can definitely qualify from. A good start is important.”

Kane’s strike came after Alli had also opened his account for the campaign, while Son Heung-min scored twice in his first appearance of the season.

And unlike his English colleagues, the South Korean midfielder got his first taste of the most famous stadium in England when Spurs trained there recently.

“For every player, it’s a dream to play in the Champions League,” Son said.

“For me also, It’s two years since I played in the Champions League. I can’t wait for this night.

“My first time I went training at Wembley, the stadium was unbelievable. I’m excited to play there, so many fans will be there and we have to win this game.”

Monaco arrive in London in confident mood after climbing to the top of Ligue 1 with a 4-1 win at Lille.

Leonardo Jardim’s team are unbeaten in four league matches, including an upset of French champions Paris Saint Germain, and survived two tough rounds of qualifying against Fenerbahce and Villarreal to reach the Champions League group stages.

According to former France and Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit, Jardim’s men should not be underestimated.

“Monaco will not be intimidated. They are in good form and they beat PSG just before the international break,” he said.

“They are organised and are playing well. Spurs need to be careful of them.”

‘I’m Not Against America’: Denver Broncos Linebacker Brandon Marshall Takes Knee During National Anthem

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/marshall-knee-508x620.jpg?fit=508%2C620
DENVER (TheBlaze/AP) — Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall, a college teammate of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, took to a knee during the playing of the national anthem before Denver’s season opener against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.

Kaepernick refused to stand for the anthem during San Francisco’s preseason games, explaining it was to protest racial oppression and police brutality in the United States.

Marshall sounded a similar theme after Denver’s 21-20 win.

“I’m not against the military, I’m not against America,” he said. “I’m against social injustice.”

Kaepernick’s gesture opened a wide debate and put the microscope on a pregame tradition that has, for decades, been routine.

Marshall was standing with his hand over his heart during the anthem before a preseason game on Aug. 20.

He made no mention of his plans for Thursday’s opener but shortly after the large American flag was unfurled, the fifth-year linebacker out of Nevada went to the end of a long row of Broncos and took a knee.

“I prayed about it,” Marshall said after the game, “and I felt like God led me.”

Broncos Super Bowl MVP Von Miller said he supported Kaepernick, too. “I’m not going to kneel for the national anthem, but I feel it should be a change. His actions really brought the topic, brought it into the conversation. I’m with Colin all the way.”

Cam Newton’s father calls out referees for bias against his son

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/cam-newton-1.jpg?fit=600%2C385

Cam Newton

Cam Newton’s father Cecil was bothered by what he saw on the field Thursday night during the season-opening game between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos and thinks the referees need to be held accountable for not doing a better job. Cecil Newton also thinks there is a bias among referees against his son and wonders why Cam didn’t receive the same preferential treatment many other marquee quarterbacks receive.

Cecil spoke with ESPN’s Jim Trotter and vented about the beating his son took and questioned the referees.

“I’m beginning to question the consistency of how games are being called — and who they would call this particular play against versus this particular player,” Newton’s father told ESPN’s Jim Trotter in an interview. “Was Cam treated differently from other quarterbacks? In this case, yes he was — clearly. Anybody who has followed the game for any length of time and has a working knowledge of how the game is to be played would agree with that statement.

“People throw all these jingles out there about he’s mobile, he’s bigger, he’s more physical. There’s a lot of this and that. At the end of the day, Cam deserves to be protected just like Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Ryan Tannehill, Kirk Cousins, Andy Dalton, and the list goes on and on.”

Cecil Newton also questioned whether the Broncos players were deliberately head-hunting Cam. He wonders whether there is a racial bias that accounts for the lack of protection the Panthers QB received.

“These guys have to do a better, unbiased job. I don’t want it to necessarily be because he’s a black quarterback. But it causes you to wonder — are you really biased or have some hidden reason [for treating him differently]? Because if everybody else can see the targeting — I can’t tell you how many calls I’ve gotten since last night, in the last 12 hours.”

“I’m not just going to always say it’s race; I’m not going to keep fanning the flames of race in every situation,” he said. “But it causes me to wonder. Help me understand through transparency. Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL, help me understand how this can happen to the reigning MVP. Explain that to me. I’m not going to fan the flames of race in this particular category, but I really sit back and ask myself, ‘Would this have happened to some of his other fellow colleagues?’ Let the public answer the question for themselves.”

The amount of shots Newton took during the Panthers’ loss on Thursday has been the biggest storyline to emerge from the game. There were questions about some hits he took to the head, especially one late in the game that was negated by off-setting penalties (you can see the hits here).

Newton is not in the NFL’s concussion protocol despite the shots he took, but you do have to wonder about the referees not protecting him more. Reigning league MVPs typically are treated like the league’s golden boys, but that clearly wasn’t the case with Cam on Thursday.

Les Miles will review Josh Boutte’s late hit against Wisconsin

LSU head coach Les Miles has a lot to review after an upset loss to the Wisconsin Badgers to open up the season, and one of them will be the late hit by offensive lineman Josh Boutte.

After safety D’Cot Dixon intercepted LSU quarterback Brandon Harris late in the fourth quarter to seal the 16-14 win for Wisconsin on Saturday, he found himself on the receiving end of a vicious cheap shot from Boutte (video here).

Miles said after the game that he would review the hit, hinting that it was possible Boutte didn’t know the play was over.

“I grabbed him right away,” Miles said, per Adam Rittenberg of ESPN. “I’m going to have to see the film, but he’s an offensive lineman in protection, and what happens downfield sometimes is you’re protecting beyond the play. … Again, I’ll have to check this, but it’s very logical that he did not even know [Dixon] had gone down and was just running [with the ball].

“He’s not a malicious guy,” Miles continued. “I just can’t imagine that he saw him go down and then made it back.”

Boutte was ejected immediately for the hit, which definitely looked unambiguously callous. Hopefully after reviewing the film, Miles will be able to determine if further disciplinary action is warranted for the senior lineman.

Ventura confident Italy will bounce back against Israel

http://www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/2b73f0d0b68b3f8df58d81c9cdcd65b4363703c4.jpg

Haifa (Israel) (AFP) – New Italy coach Giampiero Ventura said he was unconcerned by Thursday’s home defeat to France ahead of his team’s opening World Cup qualifier in Israel on Monday.

The 2006 World Cup champions slumped to a 3-1 defeat in Bari on Thursday but Ventura, who took over the Azzurri hotseat from new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, does not expect such a stern test in Haifa.

“With the greatest of respect, Israel aren’t France. We will analyse (the) match, we’ll look at some errors that we can avoid and I’m sure we’ll put in a better performance,” Ventura, 68, said.

Even so, there is anxiety in the Italian camp with striker Graziano Pelle, who scored against France, insisting: “There are no excuses, we must beat Israel.”

Italy are expected to battle with Spain for top spot in Group G and the only automatic qualification place.

The 2010 world champions begin their campaign against minnows Liechtenstein while Albania and Macedonia round out the group.

The winners of each group will qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, while the eight best runners-up advance to the play-offs.

Midfield orchestrator Marco Verratti, who missed the 2016 European Championships due to injury, says Italy are up against it.

“We have been put in a difficult group, but if we do what what we can then we have a good chance of getting through,” he said.

The usually deep-lying ball-player says he will operate a more advanced role under Ventura.

“I often speak with Ventura about my position on the pitch. Playmakers are often man-marked and so the coach wants to play me as an attacking midfielder, which I’m comfortable with,” said the 23-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star.

“Compared to before (under Conte), we perhaps look to keep the ball more in order to create space where we can do damage.”

Centre-back Leonardo Bonucci will play despite worries about his young son’s health, but the injured veteran Daniele De Rossi will miss out for Italy.

Israel are looking to qualify for their first World Cup since 1970.

They will also start their qualifying campaign with a new manager after Eli Guttman resigned following four mediocre years in charge, to be replaced by Elisha Levy.

Israel captain Eran Zahavi says his team are aiming for qualification despite lining up with of Europe’s biggest heavyweights in their group.

“Do not stop believing, we will not give up and we will give it our all,” said the 28-year-old Guangzhou forward.

Following this match, Italy tackle Spain in Turin on October 6 while Israel travel to Skopje to face Macedonia the same evening.

Les Miles has firm warning for LSU players considering Lambeau Leap against Wisconsin

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/les-miles-carried.jpg?fit=575%2C373

Les Miles carried

The LSU Tigers face the Wisconsin Badgers at Lambeau Field on Saturday, so naturally, a few LSU players thought they’d have some fun with it if they scored a touchdown.

Several players, including punt returner and cornerback Tre’Davious White, said they’d perform the Lambeau Leap if they scored a touchdown in the game, no matter what the punishment was for doing it. By NCAA rule, it would be a 15-yard penalty, though the players expected coach Les Miles to have something else in mind.

“Definitely. I’m pretty much just open to whatever punishment that’s going to come my way Monday,” White said, via Ross Dellenger of the Advocate. “It’s going to be bad, but I feel like, it’s just a dream of mine. Whatever Coach Miles has in store, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be some bad things. I’m ready to do it. It’s my last year. I want to make some memorable moments.”

So, coach, what would you do to them if they did?

Alrighty then. That’s pretty persuasive. Perhaps Les is just aware of the hazards of the Lambeau Leap. Frankly, at this point, I hope White scores a touchdown on Saturday now. I want to see how committed he is to defying his coach.

Blatter in last fight against FIFA ban

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/d0051aac35ecdddce008ae2c8b3534a019a12230.jpg?fit=640%2C419

Geneva (AFP) – Sepp Blatter will mount his final challenge against his six-year FIFA ban on Thursday, following more than a year of scandal that saw him thrown out of football in disgrace.

The former FIFA boss has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) seeking to overturn a suspension imposed by world football’s governing body.

“I’m very confident,” the 80-year-old Blatter told AFP last week, although his prospects for an outright victory would appear to be remote.

The now infamous, endlessly debated case first emerged in September of last year, when Swiss prosecutors said they were investigating Blatter over a suspect 2 million Swiss franc payment ($ 2 million, 1.8 million euros) he authorised in 2011 to his one-time heir apparent, Michel Platini.

Those revelations initially triggered a provisional suspension by FIFA’s ethics committee.

A full investigation and trial by FIFA’s in-house court found Blatter and Platini both guilty of ethics violations. They were banned from football for eight years in December.

A FIFA appeals committee cut those penalties to six years in February, just before Blatter’s successor and fellow Swiss national, Gianni Infantino, was elected as FIFA’s new president.

Blatter’s hopes for redemption at CAS are likely hampered by Platini’s failed appeal at the Lausanne-based court.

In a May ruling CAS judges said they were “not convinced” that the $ 2 million payment was legitimate.

They did however reduce the suspension against the former French star and European football chief from six years to four, judging FIFA’s penalty “too severe.”

– ‘We’re not all liars’ –

Throughout the protracted saga, both Blatter and Platini have insisted the payment was part of a legitimate oral contract.

Platini had been hired by FIFA as a consultant from 1999 to 2002 and had apparently not received his full compensation.

The two men claimed the $ 2 million was authorised in 2011 as an honest effort to settle that account.

Judges at FIFA and CAS have so far found that argument unpersuasive.

Blatter has maintained his innocence as his four decade FIFA career unravelled over the last 13 months, and continued that trend in the interview last week.

“FIFA made the contract with Platini, and this was an oral contract,” he told AFP at a plush restaurant in Zurich.

“So far in the FIFA committees, in the ethics committee and in the appeal committee, they were saying: we don’t believe that. But we are not all liars. So I think there is a good chance that this panel will believe that there was a contract.”

Arguments at CAS are expected to last just one day, although a decision may take several weeks.

The hearing marks the latest legal battle in a series of intertwined scandals that began in May of last year, when the US Justice Department unsealed a raft of corruption indictments against top FIFA officials.

Prosecutors in New York have since indicted 40 football and sports marketing executives over allegedly receiving tens of millions of bribes and kickbacks.

Some of the most powerful people in the game have fallen, including FIFA’s long-serving secretary general Jerome Valcke who like Blatter is facing a criminal investigation in Switzerland.

Lavoy Allen trolls Paul George over getting crossed up against China

During a comfortable victory by the United States men’s basketball team over China in their opening game of the Rio Olympics, Paul George was the victim of a crossover by Zhao Jiwei that sent the Pacers star to the floor. The following day, one of George’s teammates in Indiana had jokes.

Lavoy Allen took to his Twitter account on Sunday saying he was going to start up a collection so George’s ankles can be laid to rest.

In case you’re wondering if George had a response, he did. The three-time NBA All-Star made use of the middle finger emoji.

After the game, George denied getting crossed up and gave his side of the story. You can see what he said here. I don’t think Lavoy Allen is buying it.

Dario Saric has funny English misnomer after game-saving block against Spain

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/dario-saric.jpg?fit=560%2C399

dario-saric

Dario Saric saved the day for Croatia on Saturday with a game-winning block on Pau Gasol in the closing seconds to secure the upset victory over Spain in Group B of the men’s basketball tournament at Rio. But his English could probably still use some touching up.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Saric dropped a comical misnomer when attempting to describe how sweet his clutch rejection was, per Michael Lee of The Vertical.

As delicious as cherry cake sounds, I highly doubt that was the proper idiomatic usage by the 22-year-old. Then again, Saric, who will finally be making the leap to the NBA and joining the Sixers next season, has been showing out on the international level recently, so he’s probably more than content to let his game do all the talking.

China"s Olympic Men"s Basketball Team Shows Promise Against Team USA

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/2016-07-28-1469666102-4058598-basketball400906_1280-thumb.jpg?fit=570%2C381
2016-07-28-1469666102-4058598-basketball400906_1280.jpg

On Tuesday night, the Chinese Olympic Men"s Basketball Team played its second game in three nights against Team USA. The game result, as many expected, was one-sided against China.

Although both games were lopsided, 106-57 and 107-57 respectively, each was an opportunity for the young Chinese team to take away valuable lessons learned against a highly skilled opponent.

After a film session, Beijing coaches likely reiterated that they played within a team concept and worked hard. These two components were echoed by Team USA and Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski, and are certainly key if the Chinese squad is to do well at next month"s Olympics in Rio. Chinese Head Coach Gong Luming has seen talent in-action and likely stressed these warm-up games against Team USA were like any other games. After all, Gong played a part in the Chinese team"s magical run in the 1996 Olympics where the Beijing beat Angola and Argentina only to fall to then host Team USA featuring Shaquille O"Neal, Charles Barkley, and Grant Hill.

"Before the game started, we kind of knew the result," Gong told USA reporters after the first loss. "The result for us was not important. More important is the process."

While the Chinese squad cannot substitute out 1st-team NBA All-stars for fresh All-stars like Team USA, it does play within the system which has some NBA talent.

Arguably the most known Chinese basketball player outside Yao Ming, Yi Jianlian, the Milwaukee Bucks number six overall selection in the 2007 NBA draft, played in the first game, but did not participate in the second. Yi played five seasons in the NBA with four teams, before he returned to play in the Chinese Basketball Association.

NBA front offices selected two Chinese players in this year"s draft. Huston Rockets picked Zhou Qi, a 7"2" center, who averaged 15.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks with Xinjiang Tigers in the CBA. The Memphis Grizzlies drafted another center, Wang Zhelin, who averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds the over three seasons, but saw production decline due to injuries last year. One or both draftees are expected to stay in China to hone and mature their basketball skills.

Aside from these three players is former NBA prospect Chinese guard Guo Ailun. "It"s just a game," Guo told FIBA.com in July, speaking about the opening Olympic round game against Team USA. "I"m a player and will just play game by game."

While Team USA is loaded with world-class talent, the Chinese squad should not be starstruck. Many former NBA all-stars have played or are playing in the Chinese Basketball Association. Stephon Marbury, Gilbert Arenas, and Michael Beasley, are just some of the former NBA All-Star talent playing in China. Even Jordan Crawford, former Washington Wizards guard, scored 72 points in a CBA game earlier this year.

The Chinese Men"s National Basketball Team is a rising team in the basketball world. It beat France in July in an international friendly in which Yi scored 28 points. Such a victory demonstrates the competitive nature of the Chinese team which is 14th in the FIBA world rankings (as of Oct 2015), and on the rise. While Beijing has dominated the FIBA Asia Championships, winning 19 times (16 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze), competition is more competitive than ever. Iran and The Philippines have challenged China in recent years. Both these squads have had at least one current or former NBA player on their squad. Hamed Haddadi and Arslan Kazemi played for Tehran. Andray Blatche, who averaged 31 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists last season as a member of the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, became a Filipino citizen last year, making him eligible to play on his new country"s national team.

Although China plays Team USA in the opening round of the Olympics, group play should be a solid determiner where they stand in international competition. The games should also prepare Beijing to host the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, in which 31 other teams will compete.
