Zach Ertz could reportedly miss extended time with rib injury

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/zach-ertz.jpg?fit=560%2C375

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz showed some nice chemistry with Carson Wentz, catching six passes for 58 yards in a Week 1 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately, the team might be without his services for the foreseeable future.

According to a report by Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday, Ertz could miss “an extended period” after suffering a displacement of the first rib on his left side in Sunday’s win.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is calling Ertz “week-to-week” and said that, while the 25-year-old did not suffer a fracture, his rib displaced itself under the collarbone.

Ertz got a five-year extension from the team just last January, which makes the timing of the injury even worse. Veteran Brent Celek and special teams cog Trey Burton are the next men up at the tight end position. Though both are stronger blockers, they’ll likely have a difficult time replicating Ertz’s production as a pass-catcher.

Joe Thomas blocking

Joe Thomas has been voted to nine Pro Bowls and named first-team All-Pro six times during his career. Watching this video clip shows you exactly why.

Watch as the Cleveland Browns left tackle takes on two Philadelphia Eagles defenders at the same time to give RG3 an extra second to set up a screen pass:

You just can’t teach that kind of awesomeness. Too bad Griffin will be out for several weeks with an injury suffered late in the game.

The Saints have a long way to go and a short time to get there

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/usa-today-9035235.0.jpg?fit=640%2C426

Drew Brees’ long-awaited contract extension is the first of many steps.

The New Orleans Saints have finally signed Drew Brees to a contract extension –– too bad they didn’t do it when there were still quality free agents available.

The deal is relatively team-friendly: it’s a five-year extension, but only guaranteed for two seasons. The Saints will pay Brees $ 44.25 million through 2017, including $ 24.25 million in new money. It’s a nice payday for the 37-year-old Brees and lowers his cap hit from a whopping $ 30 million down to $ 17.25 million.

But since the Saints didn’t sign Brees to a new contract until Wednesday –– just days before the two parties’ reported Week 1 deadline –– they were financially handicapped during the offseason. And for the second consecutive year, they spent the little money they did have on ancillary offensive pieces instead of addressing one of the worst defenses in the league.

Tight end Coby Fleener will probably post career numbers alongside Brees, after agreeing to a five-year, $ 36 million deal with the Saints in free agency. But New Orleans already had one of the most potent offenses in the NFL last season, finishing eighth in points scored and second in yards. That money would’ve been better spent on upgrading the second-worst pass defense in the league.

With limited funds, the only notable veterans who the Saints added to their defense were tackle Nick Fairley and linebacker James Laurinaitis. They spent three of their five draft picks on defensive players –– including highly touted Louisville DT Sheldon Rankins –– but it’s unrealistic to expect rookies to turn around this porous defense.

Even though Brees’ numbers are still awesome, the realistic window to win with him is diminishing. In order for the Saints to make the most of Brees’ final seasons, they must be one of the most aggressive and prudent front offices in the game over the next couple of years.

How much does Brees have left?

The numbers indicate that Brees isn’t close to being finished. He’s led the league in passing yards in four of the last five seasons, averaging 5,127 yards and 39 touchdowns per year during that time. But he battled injuries throughout the 2015 campaign.

Brees missed Week 3 with a shoulder injury after bruising his rotator cuff during the second game of the season. Though his play didn’t waiver once he returned –– Brees posted a 104.1 QB rating over his final 13 starts –– attention turned to his ailing foot in late December. The perennial Pro Bowler was diagnosed with torn plantar fascia Dec. 23, which he played through until the end of the season.

In isolation, those injuries aren’t a big deal. Brees has been remarkably durable during his career, playing in 15 or more games during all but one of his 15 seasons. But at 37 years old, the significance of each bruise is magnified.

Given that the Saints can void the final three years of the contract for no additional cost, it’s clear this isn’t a long-term play between the two sides. Brees can be expected to put up elite numbers for a couple of more seasons, but anything else should be considered gravy. The Saints must turn attention to their defense, which they’ve woefully ignored in recent years.

Focus on depth rather than stars

Unfortunately, teams that must win now can’t count on draft picks to make an immediate impact. That means the Saints may have no choice but to delve into the free agent market.

They know first-hand how reckless free agent spending sprees can be. Linebacker may be one of the worst singings in recent history, combining poor production with lousy leadership and a domestic violence charge. The Saints released him last summer on terrible terms.

Cornerback Jairus Byrd’s tenure in the Bayou State hasn’t been as colorful, but it’s been nearly as disappointing. He’s failed to live up to his six-year, $ 54 million contract and now holds a $ 10.9 million salary cap hit.

The Saints, who led the league in points allowed last season, have too many holes on defense to spend on just a couple of big-ticket names. They need to almost remake their defensive roster on the fly, which will require judicious spending and keen talent evaluation.

Instability is a reason for pessimism

While owner Tom Benson continues to be involved in a nasty lawsuit involving his daughter and her children over control of the team, general manager Mickey Loomis and head coach Sean Payton appear to have autonomy. Despite two straight 7-9 finishes –– and only one playoff birth since his 2012 Bountygate suspension –– Payton agreed to a massive five-year, $ 45 million extension this offseason.

It’s fine that Payton is sticking around. He remains one of the more innovative offensive minds in the game and is the winningest head coach in franchise history, leading the Saints to their only Super Bowl title in 2009. But in order for New Orleans to return to the postseason, Payton needs worthy defensive-minded sidekick. Rob Ryan certainly didn’t fit that bill, and Dennis Allen’s resume of recent failings doesn’t suggest he is, either.

Over the last two years, Loomis has largely ignored defense to add Mark Ingram, C.J. Spiller and Fleener. Now that he has money to spend, there’s no guarantee his philosophy will shift without anybody steering him in a different direction.

Brees remains one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but the Saints’ recent run of futility shows he can’t lead them back to prominence alone. Time is running out for New Orleans to right the ship.

What Time & TV Channel Is the Browns-Eagles Game on Today?

The Cleveland Browns take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the opening game of the season for both teams. The game kicks off at 1 p.m. Eastern on CBS.

Here’s the details for today’s opening matchup.

Date: Sunday, September 11, 2016

Time: 1 p.m. Eastern

Location: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

TV Channel: The game is broadcast regionally on CBS. Click here to see if you live in an area that will broadcast the game.

Line: Eagles by 3.5 (Odds are courtesy of OddsShark and subject to change.)

Game Preview: The Browns and Eagles kick off the season this afternoon. Both teams have restless fan bases who have not seen a winning product in quite some time (with the exception of one solid season from Chip Kelly).

For Philadelphia, it appears to be another rebuilding year with rookie Carson Wentz taking over the quarterback position. Wentz played in limited action in the preseason after sustaining a rib injury.

There is reason for optimism in Cleveland. All signs point to an offense seeing an uptick in production with a Hue Jackson remodel. RGIII takes over at quarterback, and Josh Gordon is slated to return early in the season after serving a short suspension. Cleveland drafted another receiving weapon in Baylor’s Corey Coleman. Time will tell if this is the season where the Browns can translate offseason optimism to fielding a competitive team.

UFC 203 fight card: Start time and TV schedule for Miocic vs. Overeem

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/usa-today-9287236.0.jpg?fit=640%2C426

Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem are set to throw down, but many eyes will be watching on Saturday for the debut of CM Punk.

A heavyweight bought between Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem is set to headline UFC 203: Stipe vs. Miocic on Saturday, but the card is packed with intrigue. Miocic will be defending the UFC Heavyweight Championship against Overeem, and is riding a three-fight win streak.

This will be Miocic"s first title defense since he won it over Fabricio Werdum. Overeem, who lost three of his first five UFC fights, is on a four-fight win streak with the organization and has rebounded nicely.

Another pair of heavyweights, Travis Browne and Werdum, will face off in the penultimate match on Saturday"s main card. But the third match on the card is making the biggest headlines due to the fact that it will be the MMA debut of former WWE performer CM Punk.

Punk is trying his hand at MMA, and the UFC is giving him a spot on the main card for his debut. He"ll be facing Micky Gall, a fighter with a 2-0 record but one who is favored over Punk due to that experience. Punk has been practicing for his debut for well over a year, but Gall has already stepped into a ring and fought, something Punk cannot say.

The main card will also feature Urijah Faber in a bantamweight bout against Jimmie Rivera, and a women"s straweight contest between Jessica Andrade and Joanne Calderwood. A match between Jessica Eye and Bethe Correia headlines the preliminary card.

Previously, the card was supposed to feature Ray Borg and Ian McCall on the preliminary card, but Borg sustained an injury and had to bow out. Werdum was originally set to face Ben Rothwell, but Rothwell had to pull out due to injury. Browne originally lost a unanimous decision to Werdum back in 2014 at UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne.

Saturday"s pay-per-view main card is set for 10 p.m. ET. The night of fights will start, as usual, on the subscription service UFC Fight Pass at 6:30 p.m. After a pair of fights, FOX Sports 1 will pick up coverage for the remainder of the preliminary card at 8 p.m. until the pay-per-view card begins.

You can watch the entire card online via UFC.TV, the UFC"s YouTube channel and via UFC apps on the current generation of game consoles and other smart devices. Below is a look at the full fight card and links to all you need to watch the action.

Iman Shumpert reportedly in possession of marijuana at time of DUI arrest

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Friday that Iman Shumpert was arrested last month for suspicion of driving while under the influence during a traffic stop in Georgia.

“Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert was arrested by Fayette County (Ga.) Police outside Atlanta for suspicion of DUI following an Aug. 10 traffic stop for a lane violation,” the statement read. “The Cavaliers have discussed the situation with Iman and will monitor the progression of the pending case. A court date has not been set at this point, and neither Iman or the team will have any additional comments while the matter progresses through the legal process.”

According to a report from TMZ, the arresting officer said Shumpert smelled of marijuana and his eyes were bloodshot. After failing a field sobriety test, the 26-year-old admitted he had smoked marijuana at a friend’s house.

Shumpert refused a blood test, claiming “people would recognize him and it would cause a scene.” Police found a mason jar with marijuana inside when they searched his vehicle, and Shumpert was arrested for DUI and weed possession. He also received a citation for failing to stay in his lane.

All we can hope for is that Shumpert wasn’t under the influence when he played doctor at his house last year. That would be a terrifying thought.

The NFL starts this season where it finished last season with a Super Bowl 50 rematch between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos. “The Sequel” kicks off on NBC at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.

Here’s the details for tonight’s opening NFL matchup.

Date: Thursday, September 8, 2016

Time: 8:30 p.m. Eastern

Location: Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver, Colorado

TV Channel: NBC (Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth, and Michele Tafoya)

Line: Panthers by 3 (Odds courtesy of OddsShark and subject to change.)

Game Preview: Carolina is out for revenge after Denver comfortably defeated the Panthers for the Lombardi Trophy. While it is the same two teams playing, the rosters look a bit different than they did last season.

The most noticeable difference for Denver is at the quarterback position with Peyton Manning retiring and Brock Osweiler signing with the Houston Texans. Denver begins the season with Trevor Siemian as the starting quarterback. The Broncos traded up to select Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch in the 2016 NFL Draft, but Lynch will start the season as the backup.

For Carolina, star cornerback Josh Norman is now with the Washington Redskins. Cam Newton gets top target Kelvin Benjamin back after missing all of last season with a torn ACL. Newton hopes Benjamin can add a boost to the offense tonight against the Broncos and for the 2016 season.

Cleveland Cavaliers fans may have to start worrying about the dreaded Kardashian Kurse striking the team.

TMZ Sports reports that big man Tristan Thompson has been spending a lot of time with Khloe Kardashian lately. They say the two were at a mansion together in Beverly Hills Thursday.

Kardashian and Thompson also were at the same club over the weekend and left within minutes of each other.

TMZ Sports says they are not sure if the two are dating.

Khloe Kardashian has a long list of professional athletes she’s been rumored to have dated. That ranges from James Harden to Matt Kemp to estranged husband Lamar Odom. Let’s just hope this latest report doesn’t ruin anything for Thompson like it did for this guy.

GM Bob Myers: Warriors will need ‘some time to evolve’

http://i0.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/bob-myers-warriors.jpg?fit=600%2C400

bob-myers-warriors

Even after they won an NBA-record 73 games last regular season, many seem to think that the Golden State Warriors will easily be able to surpass that mark after staging the coup of the offseason by landing former MVP Kevin Durant. But general manager Bob Myers wants to pump the brakes a bit.

In an interview with KNBR 680 on Wednesday, Myers attempted to temper expectations for 2016-17.

“I think a lot of people think we signed Durant and everything is great, which in reality, that is a really good thing,” Myers said, per CSN Bay Area. “But we have a lot of new parts. This is not a team like last year’s team, where we could just hit training camp in stride. As much as we like our roster, it’s gonna take some time to evolve.

“Even though we’re happy with the offseason, I do think we’re gonna have some turbulence,” Myers continued. “Because the other thing is, I think the scrutiny on the team is gonna be so high that any loss, anything that happens in a negative way, is gonna be exaggerated. It’s just gonna be, ‘I can’t believe they lost a home game,’ or ‘I can’t believe they lost two in a row,’ … people might write or say, ‘Well, they’re not as good as last year,’ so there will be some challenges and incorporating a really, really good player into our team.”

People tend to overlook continuity and team chemistry building when they assume that Golden State will smash the earth right off the bat. For as wildly gifted as Durant is, the Warriors will still have to reinvent themselves after the losses of two starters (Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut) as well as several key bench contributors (Leandro Barbosa, Festus Ezeli, Marreese Speights, and, to a lesser extent, Brandon Rush).

It’s always a culture shock to add a large-volume scorer to an established, championship-proven system where everybody already knows and is comfortable with their role. Durant will have his fair share of adjusting to do as well. The Warriors will figure it out eventually, because talent almost always finds a way to win out at the end of the day. But with a target on their back from every single team they play next season (a rarity for a non-defending champion), it will take some patience, as Myers is preaching.

Ryan Howard not pleased with reduced playing time

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Ryan-Howard.jpg?fit=545%2C356

Ryan Howard

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard is entering the final month of his contract with the team, so he doesn’t understand why they are cutting his playing time.

According to a report by Bob Ford of Philly.com on Wednesday, Howard recently learned that manager Pete Mackanin intends to play him less in the last month of the 2016 season so that platoon partner Tommy Joseph, a 25-year-old rookie, can spend more time facing right-handed pitching. The three-time All-Star doesn’t quite agree with the decision.

“You’re talking about an evaluation process of where you’ve gotten to see players this year play,” Howard, who has all but announced that he won’t be returning to the Phillies next season, was quoted as saying. “And you’ll have another opportunity to see those same players play again next year and I won’t be here. So, for me, I just want to play. I don’t necessarily think it’s right or fair, considering this is my last month here, but it is interesting.

“The manager shouldn’t have to answer the question in the media,” Howard went on. “I think that’s something that you talk to your players about. That’s one thing. Having to answer that question as far as the evaluation process, for me it’s tough. I’m not going to sit here and lie. I’ve got one more month here and I just want to play and finish out playing. So, it’s like I’m just trying to do my time, finish out this last month, and try to keep playing somewhere else.”

The 36-year-old Howard has largely been awful in 2016, batting just .195/.249./.440. His power has shown up sporadically with 20 home runs and 45 RBIs on the year, but he is no longer an everyday option at first base. Still, Howard got his act together with a .314 batting average and six home runs in 16 August games. It makes sense that the former NL MVP would want to spend as much of his final stretch with the Phillies on the field as possible, while also showcasing whatever talent he has left for a potential new contract from another team this winter.

Howard is in the last official year of a five-year, $ 125 million extension he signed in 2010, one of the more disatrous deals in recent memory. He has a $ 23 million club option for 2017, but the Phillies are expected to exercise his $ 10 million buyout clause.

At 60-73, Philadelphia doesn’t have a lot left to play for. While it’s intuitive that Mackanin would want to get his young guys more reps before season’s end, you’d think they’d give a warmer sendoff for one of the greatest Phillies of this generation, no matter how crippling his contract has been and how much his production has slipped. Then again, it’s probably not all that surprising given the way Howard has been treated around those parts recently.

This Chart Tells You Which Team Scores The Most ‘Fergie Time’ Goals

http://i2.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Fergie-Time-Web-320x213.jpg?fit=320%2C213
This Chart Tells You Which Team Scores The Most ‘Fergie Time’ Goals

Aguero Getty QPRGetty

The phrase ‘Fergie time’ has become a popular part of football culture over the past decade.

It comes from Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous watch tapping back in Manchester United’s glory days, where seemingly every week there’d be extra minutes added on at the end of games – in which the Red Devils would score.

But, the Daily Mail has done some research, and it turns out United are not even close to the top of the table when it comes to most goals scored in injury time in the Premier League era.

Rashford Getty vs Hull 1Getty

No, it actually turns out that Liverpool are the side that have scored the most injury time winners, with United way down in fifth place – ironically where they finished in real life last season.

Liverpool’s 28 goals is seven clear of second placed Arsenal (also where they finished last season), with Chelsea and Everton making up the top four.

Then come United in fifth with 18, way ahead of Manchester City who have bagged just ten – although one of those was Sergio Aguero’s incredible winner against Queens Park Rangers.

Bruce Getty MUGetty

It was the Red Devils who made ‘Fergie time’ a thing though, starting with Steve Bruce’s header against Sheffield Wednesday back in 1993 – when Marcus Rashford (who scored United’s latest winner against Bruce’s former side, Hull, this weekend) wasn’t even born.

And who can forget Michael Owen’s winner for United against Liverpool in 2009? And Federico Macheda’s momentum shifting strike against Aston Villa later that year?

But it turns out they’re nowhere near Liverpool in terms of numbers of late winners, with Stan Collymore’s clincher against Newcastle United in 1996 the most famous of the lot, as the Geordies managed to blow winning the Premier League after leading by 12 points in April.

Here’s the full top ten:

  1. Liverpool – 28
  2. Arsenal – 21
  3. Chelsea – 20
  4. Everton – 19
  5. Manchester United – 18
  6. Newcastle United – 17
  7. Tottenham Hotspur – 17

D’Qwell Jackson: Time for Joey Bosa to end his holdout

http://i1.wp.com/www.truesportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/joey-bosa-nfl-combine.jpg?fit=514%2C267

Joey Bosa NFL Combine

The San Diego Chargers have made it abundantly clear how they feel about first-round pick Joey Bosa and his holdout in recent days, and Bosa’s camp has made it no secret how they feel about the Chargers in return.

The back-and-forth has generated national headlines, but now it’s beginning to rub other NFL players the wrong way.

During a Thursday appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” Indianapolis Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson delivered a blunt message to Bosa: enough with the nonsense, it’s time for you to get to work.

“At the end of the day, this is what you love to do — you love to play this game,” Jackson said. “We get compensated very well, so at some point you have to talk to your agent, talk to the powers that be and like ‘I want to play football, do whatever you can to get me into camp.’ You need to show up to camp.

“We all know you can’t flip a switch and, ‘OK, I’m going to get 10 sacks or I’m going to get this many tackles.’ You have to actually build a rapport with your teammates, build a rapport with your coaches. And understand this game plays at a different speed. It takes a different type of conditioning to get yourself prepared week-in and week-out. So, there’s a ton that goes into it.”

Jackson isn’t the first NFL star to step up and address Bosa’s situation, either. Earlier this month, then-free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie injected himself into the conversation, calling out Bosa and essentially telling him to man up and sign his contract.

On Thursday, former New York Giants cornerback Brian Witherspoon also addressed the Chargers-Bosa standoff, saying the highly-touted rookie must think he’s “bigger than the game.”

The longer this situation lingers, the more and more likely we are to see other NFL players chime in. And with each passing day, the critical comments will become more personalized.

The BBC reports that the Brazilian striker is going out while he’s still on top, leaving the game behind after winning FIFA’s Puskás Award for the best goal of 2015 in a 2-1 game between Goianesia and Atletico Goianiense.

At 27, Lira revealed that there was a bit more to the decision to hang up his football boots than an interest in the FIFA videogame franchise – he also cited regular injuries.

And to be fair, the worst thing that can happen while playing a game of FIFA 17 is likely to be hand or butt cramp.

Good on Lira for not wanting to step away from football entirely though. He told Brazilian publication Globoesporte that his dream ‘is to become FIFA world champion’.

The next step for Lira is to set up a YouTube channel, where he intends to show off his virtual football prowess to the world.

With any luck, this pro player’s decision to step away from the real thing and pursue the virtual will be a genuine step towards the mainstream seeing eSports as a legitimate thing.

Then again, you have to wonder if Lira will begin to miss playing the game for real after a while. Perhaps when he becomes FIFA world champion, he’ll retire from that and get back to real world football.

With NBC’s month of programming in August being sent into a tailspin with its exclusive coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics across all of NBC’s networks, that means that many Premier League games during the first few weeks of the 2016/17 season have been moved to CNBC.

On top of that, some of NBC’s Olympic programming will be on MSNBC.

For Sling Blue customers, neither MSNBC or CNBC are available in the base package, so customers would have to subscribe to additional packages to pick up CNBC and MSNBC in order to not miss out on any Premier League and/or Olympics coverage.

However, the good news is that Sling Blue has added CNBC and MSNBC as free previews to Sling Blue customers through the end of the Olympics at no additional charge. Plus, the channels will be available to new customers via the free 7-day Sling Blue trial.

In addition to CNBC, Sling Blue offers access to NBCSN, NBC, FOX, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and many other soccer channels.

That means Sling Blue customers won’t miss any of the televised Premier League games for the month of August.

The preliminary schedule for Premier League matches in August is below. The games featured on CNBC are in bold. It’s likely that more CNBC games will be added soon when the schedule is completely finalized:
